STANDARD AND EXPRESS CARTERSVILLE. «*. OCT. 21, 1872 SUBSCRIPTION: TWO DOLLARS A YEAR, IN ADVANCE ALL SORTS. * Port-rate of a gentleman —sixty dollars a dozen in glass. Railway aphorism—Every milk train has a cow-catcher. When you marry, “ take the daugh ter of a good mother.” New book —“ Ebenezer Divorced,” a sequel to “ Ebb-Tide.” Self-made men are almost always apt to be a little proud of the job. Os all things in the world that are “ better late than never," going to bed certainly ranks first. A. Maine alderman invited to attend a centennial jubilee replied, “ I can’t attend this one, but I will go next time." A beautiful woman, said Fontenelle, is the purgatory of the purse and the paradise of the eye. There is a widow in England who enjoys an income of $250,000 a year. She has no other incumbrance. A San Francisco journal states that a wealthy miner has fallen in love with Mrs. Fair, and will marry her. The ladies are now wearing bright ■ilk handkerchief* folded over their shoulders. It is a very pretty fash ion. Daniel Boone’s sister H mnab is living in Caldwell county, North Car olina. She is eighty-five years old. That’s what’s the matter with HaD nab. Rosa Bonheur is said to have ex pressed a desire to visit the United States, and if possible, to do so within the next twelve months. A Muscatine, lowa, father is exer cised to know how his daughter dis covered that eating warm maple sugar makes gentlemen’s moustaches Bcratchy. A drunkard, on being told the earth is round, and turns on its axis all the time, said: ‘‘l believe that, for Ive never been able to stand on the darned thing." The latest commercial seusution is a threatened “corner” in cueese. Why not make them round as heretofore ? Can’t the business be done thus “ on the squaro-V” Turkish ladies are asserting their right to be seen. High-born Osman damsels now dress in Parisian style, weariug veils of the thinnest possible gauze, which soften without concealing the features. Au abseut-miuded man entered a Troy shoe store the other day, and wanted his boy measured for n pair of shoes. “ But where’s the boy ?” asked the dealer. “Thunder!” said the man, “I’ve left the boy “ fhome. I’ll go and bring him.” And off he started for his house, six blocks away. LAST WORDS. However physiologists may question the importance of the feeble utterances of the dying, it is certain that man kind in general find a significance in the last words of those who are van ishing into the unkuown life. “He raves 1” said the physician when Dr. Adams, Rector of the High School of Edinburgh, was passing away; but as we catch the last words of the rav ing, our own eyes are dimmed. “It grows dark, boys,” stretchiug forth his hand; “you may go." “ All my possessions for a moment of time!” moaned Queen Elizabeth. Wesley, calmer, said as he died, “ The best of all is, God is with us.” And deaf Beethoven, whose soul had ever beeu filled with harmony, exclaimed gladly at the last, “ I shall bear.” “ Is your mind at ease ?” Goldsmith was asked by his physicians. “ Fo, it is not,” was the mournful reply, and he spoke no more. How different the parting words of Dr \V illiam Hunter! “If I had streogth to hold a pen, I would write how easy and pleasant a thing it is to die.” Or the assurance of President Ed wards, as his dying grasp loosened on hard forms of dogma, “ Trust in God and you need uot fear.” Bvron said wearily, “ I must sleep now*,” and Goethe, turning to his wife, called for “ Light, more light! ’ Dr. Johusou died in u tumult of un easiness and dread. Cowper sank to rest as peacefully as a child. “ I am taking a fearful leap iu the dark,” cried Hobbes, the Deist, and “ Now, Lord, Lord, receive my soul 1” whispered Herbert on his last “ sweet day.’ Politeness was no longer a ruling passion, but a chrism, when Chester field in dying said “ Give Dayrolles a chair,” and surely something was for given of Charles the Second when he bade farwell to earth’s pomp and wickedness iq “ Don’t let poor Nelly starve.” Haller s last words were, feeling his own pulse, “The artery ceases to beat.” Petrarch died suddenly and silent ly in his library, his hand upon a book, and Sir Isaac Newton was winding his watch when he was ush ered into that life that hath no end. Talma, the great actor, exclaimed J pitifully as he went, “ The worst of all is, I cannot see;” and John Locke murmered, “ O the depths of the rich es of the goodness and knowledge of God 1” The dying admonition of learned Grotius to his race was, “Be se rious.” Scarron, the French wit, said faint ly to his weeping friends, “ Ah! meus enfans, you cannot cry as much for me as I have made you laugh in my time;” and Lord Thurlow in reckless wonder exclaimed, “I’m shot, if I don’t believe I’m dying.” When poor Robert Burns gasped with his last breath, “ Don’t let the awkward squad fire over me!” he did not allude to his commentators and critics, yet what a significance should the words have for them! And how little Anne Boleyn thought, when awaiting the executioner, she clasped her fair throat, that “It is but small, very small,” would link her forever to the heart of Christendom! Yes, we cannot doubt that many of the most eloquent sermons mankind has ever listened to have fallen from dying lips. Csosar’a grieved “ And thou, Bru tus 1” John Quincy Adams' “ This is the last of earth;” Mirabeau’s frantic cry for “ Music ” after his life of dis cord; George Washington’s “It is well”—do they not grow richer in meaning every day ? And is it not still blessed to remem ber the last moments of Melancthon, the friend of Luther? “Do you want anything?” asked bis loved ones eagerly. Ayer’s Cherry Pectoral, For Diseases of the Throat and Lungs, such as Coughs, Colds, Whooping Cough, Bronchitis, Asthma, and Consumption. discoveries of modern JjfCf j? science, few are of more real value to iRRum mankind than this ef -I'cjgl&r I fectual remedy for all 5 I diseases of the Throat f Vi V and Lungs. A vast I ifMm f trial of its virtues, throughout this and other countries, has shown that it does sorely and effectually control them. The testimony *of our best citi zens, of all classes, establishes the fact, that Cheeky Pectoral will and does relieve and cure the afflicting disorders of the Throat and Lungs beyond any other medicine. The most dangerous’ affections of the Pulmonary Organs yield to its power; and cases of Consump tion, cured by this preparation, are public ly known, so remarkable as hardly to be be lieved, were they not proven beyond dispute. Asa remedy it is" adequate, on which the public may rely for full protection. By curing Coughs the’foreruuuers of more serious disease, it saves unnumbered lives, and an amount of suffering not to be computed. It challenges trial, and con vinces the most sceptical. Even' family should keep it on hand as a protection against the early and unperceived attack of Pulmonary Affections, which are easily met at first, but wliicli become incurable, and too often fatal, if neglected. Ten der lungs need this defence; and it is unwise to be without it. Asa safeguard to children, amid the distressing diseases which beset the Throat and Chest of childhood, Cherry Pectoral is invaluable; for, by its timely use, multi tudes are rescued from premature graves, and saved to the love and affection centred on them. It acts speedily and surely against ordinary colds, securing sound and health-restoring sleep. No one will suffer troublesome Influenza and pain ful Bronchitis, when they know how easily they can be cured. Originally the product of long, laborious, and successful chemical investigation, no cost or toil is spared in making every bottle in the utmost possible perfection. It may be confidently re lied upon as possessing all the virtues it has’ ever exhibited, and capable of producing cures as memorable as the greatest it has ever effected. PREPARED BY Dr. J. C. AYER & CO., Lowell, Mass., Practical anil Analytical Chemists. SOLD BY ALL DRUGGISTS EVERYWHERE. Ayer's Ague uure, For Fever and Ague, Intermittent Fever, Chill Fever, Remittent Fover, Dumb Ague, Periodical or Bilious Fever, &c., and indeed all tho affections which arise from malarious, marsh, or miasmatic poisons. JTKs! No one remedy is louder -At called for by the necessities of _Jsp > ' e the American people than a ■Skf sure and safe cure for Fever J and Ague. Such we arc now c.milled to offer, with a perfect JJ i- dainty that it will eradicate '•* toe disease, ami with assur ance, founded o i proof, that no harm can arise from ii.s use in any quantity. That which protects from or prevents this dis order must be of immense service in the com munities where it prevails. Prevention is better than cure, for the patient escapes the risk which he must run in violent attacks of this baleful dis temper. This “Cure” expels the miasmatic poijon of Fever and Ague from the system, and prevents the development of the disease, if taken ou the first approach of its premonitory symptoms. It is not only tho best remedy ever yet discovered for tiiis class of complaints, but also the cheapest. Tho largo quantity we sup ply for a dollar brings it within the reach of everybody; and in bilious districts, where Fever and Ague prevails, everybody should have it, and use it freely, both for . are and pro tection. It is hoped this price will place it within the reach of all —the poor as well as the rich. A great superiority of this remedy over any other ever discovered for the speedy and certain cure of Jntennitlents is, that it contains no Qui nine or mineral; consequently it produces no quinism or other injurious effects whatever upon the constitution. Those cured by it are left as healthy as if they had never had the disease. Fever and Ague is not alone the consequence of the miasmatic poison. A great variety of dis orders arise from its irritation, among which are Neuralgia, Rheumatism, Gout, Headache, Blindness, Toothache, Earache, Catarrh, Astir ma, Palpitation, Painful Affection of the Spleen, Hysterics, Pain in the Bowels, Colic, Paralysis, and derangement of ttio Stomach, all of which, when originating in this cause, put on the in termittent type, or become periodical. Tiiis “Cure” expels the poison from the blood, and consequently cures them all alike. It is an in valuable protection to immigrants and persons travelling or temporarily residing in the mala rious districts. If taken occasionally or daily while exposed to the infection, that will be ex creted from the system, and cannot accumulate in sufficient quantity to ripen into disease. Hence it is even more valuable for protection than cure; and few will ever suffer from Inter mittents if they avail themselves of the protec tion this remedy affords. For Liver Complaints, arising from torpid ity of the Liver, it is an excellent remedy, stim ulating the Liver into healthy activity, an 1 pro ducing many truly remarkable cud-;, where other medicines fail. ntEPARED BY Dr. J.
