Unparalleled bargains in Bleached Shirtings at Howard A RamsaurV. On next Friday evening Miss O L Verdery gives a musical entertain ment in the chapel of the Cartersville Fenlah l Seminary, assisted by her music class, and by Prof. Freyer, of Marietta. A programme of this mu sical festival can he seen in another column of this paper. The music has been arranged and the programme planned with great taste and labor, and from the well merited reputation of Miss Verdery as an accomplished instructress of music, we may expect a rich treat. This entertainment is given for the purpose of raising funds with which to purchase an organ for the use of the school. Miss V. could have sent around her young lady pu pils with a subscription, and raised the necessary means without this trouble, but she prefers to repay con tributors by affording an evening’s entertatnraent in which she will be the leading contributor. Os course every citizen of Cartersville who can will encourage the young ladies in their very praiseworthy undertaking both by their presence and with their means. Rice, crop ’72, and Sugar and Cof fee for sale cheap by H. M. Clapton. We were misinformed as to the origin of the fire that consumed Mr. Hudgin’s stable, in this city, of which we spoke in last week's issue of our paper, so we are informed by Mr. A G B Vandivere, who had charge of the stable at the time. Instead of its being set on fire by a negroe’s pipe, Mr. V. thinks that it was donebj an incendiary with the view of stealing his mule which was locked up in it. A mule was stolen from him about one year ago, from which he has not as yet been able to hear a word, and he thinks that the same thief was af ter another one. We also stated, in the same paper, that Mr. Francis Fontaine’s gin-house took fire from a spark from the en gine propelling the gin. Mr. F. in forms us that the fire originated from the friction of the gin, and not from a spark from the engine, as was sta led. We correct these statements with pleasure, as they were penned from hen-say. Boots and .Shoes enough for the world at Howard A Ramsaur’s. We beat every body in this line. Pease and Ilis Wife, seven years I in business, started with no business, i now have a good business, all by sticking to our own business and | keeping in ignorance of others’ busi ness. We invite attention to the flaming advertisement of Messrs. A A Skin ner A Cos., wholesale and retail Gro cers, Produce Dealers, and Confec tioners, to be found in another col umn. Mr. A A Skinner and Pi A Clayton, proprietors, are both gentle men of the finest business tact, and combine all the nobler qualities of true gentlemen. They are courteous and kind to their customers, and ever ready to lend a helping hand in eve ry good work. Generous, liberal and indulgent, they never oppress an hon est debtor. While they transact bu siness in a uniform and systematic way, their sympathies are enlisted on the side of mercy. This house lias been a benefactor to the debt-ridden farmer and mechanic, in the way of furnishing them with supplies, and giving them the benefit of all the in dulgence that lay within their pow er to grant. They pay farmers the best market prices for their produce, and sell them groceries at very short profits. We think we hazard noth ing in saying that this is one of the very best grocery houses in North Georgia, as the heavy patronag they receive fully and amply testifies. THE SABBATH BELL. How sweetly sounds the Sabbat h bell Upon the silent air! It calls the weary ones of earth To seek the Lord in prayer. It calls the aged and the weak To Christ who giveth rest; And bids theyouthful and the strong To be forever West. It calls the sinner to repent And seek to be forgiven ; It tells of peace and joy on earth, And happiness in heaven. Its music charms the pilgrim’s ear, And bids him cease to roam ; It calls him to the house of God, The way to heaven, his home. O let us heed the Sabbath bell, The house of prayer attend, That God may own and bless us here, | And save us in the end. B. Jourdan, Howard AHarralson, the great wholesale tobacconists of the South, occupy one of the handsomest store-rooms in Atlanta, in front of j the Kimball House second door from ! the corner of the block nearest the car-shed, where they now have on hand a mammoth stock of tobaccos, ; cigars, snuff, Ac. Mark W. Johnson, the model agri-1 cultural implement dealer of the Em-! pire State of the South, Atlanta, Ga., i lias something to say to our readers | in another column of this paper. He j is a citi/.en of our county, and one that our people need not be ashamed of.— We have known him from his child hood up, and can truthfully say that wo never knew a more perfect gen tlemen. He was born, raised and ed ucated iu Georgia, is of the best fam ilies of the State. Honest and up right in his dealings, courteous and affable in his intercourse, he elicits the respect and good-will of all who chance to make his acquaintance.— At the late Stale Fair, betook a large number of diplomas and premiums on bis implements, by far the latgest number awarded to any like dealer, lie has recently had printed a great many very beautiful illustrated cata logues, which we saw at the Econom ical Job Printing Office of that city, Whieh he proposes to send out gratis to farmers and dealers all over the country, on application to him by letter or otherwise. Let our readers send and get them. Orders left at this oflice for them will be promptly forwarded. TO THE VOTERS OF BARTOW. It is due, alike to myself and friends to notice a report, which is being ac tively circulated to my prejudice, where I am not well known. To those who know my politics and my antecedents, reaching back for thirty years, there is no necessity for me to say one word. The substance is, that 1 distributed and encouraged Radical or Walker tickets at Cassville on the 2d inst. This is absurd upon its face, as a number of the best citizens of Wolfpen and Cassville districts know. I used every effort to get men to the polls, with the avowed purpose of “ swelliug Smith’s majority.” With out characterizing the report with any harsher terms, I brand it, with out qualification, absolutely false, and without a single circumstance to give it even plausibility. Those who fab ricated, indorsed, and willingly circu lated said report with a view to injure me, I resign to the upbraidings of their own coneiences. ATTENTION! ETOWAH DRA GOONS !! You will meet on your parade ground, in front of Roberts A Turn lin’s stable, for drill, on Saturday morning, Nov. 9th, at 11 o’clock. By order P. M. B. YOUNG, Capt. R. M. Stiles, Act. Sect’y. P. H. George Bright, who was for a long time a member of the Geor gia Conference, and for several years Presiding Elder on the Dahlonega District, preached a very interesting sermon at the Methodist Church in this place on last Sunday night. We always welcome its weekly visits to our office. B. All wool Linseys, 27c, at Howard A Ramsaur’s. We think the “affair of honor” which took place at the Atlanta Cem cterg the other day, was a very dis honorable affair, and should be so re graded by all sensible people. ANSWERS TO CORRESPOND ENTS. “School Girl.”— We cannot pub lish your ccrmfnunlcation as 1t is not accompanied with a responsible name. Send us your name if you wish your article to be inserted. You seem to be laboring under a mistake, for you suppose that the author of “Not Mar ried Yet,” is a gentleman, when such is not the fact. So you have hurled your thunder-bolts against the wrong sex. Try it again, but be sure you are right next time! “ Young Poet.” —Y"es, we would like to have a bushel or so of original poetry for our paper; the blank verse variety prefered, so that we can fill the blanks to suit our own taste. “ Paul Pry.”—lt’s none of your business. “ Sapho.” —We think your symp toms are somewhat alarming. You seem to think that your difficulty is caused by “unrequited love,” but our opinion is that such is not the sole cause of your trouble. We think a bottle of “Fanestoek’s vermifuge” would probably relieve you. “Enquirer.”—Our fat editor says he will take for subscriptions to our paper, raw-hides, beeswax, tallow, feathers, rags, or anythidg else that he can eat. B. MARIETTA. We went to Marietta on hist Friday and returned same day. It was a big time, it being the occasion of the Democratic mass-meeting and barbe cue at that place. The speaking took place at Glover’s Tan-yard about a mile from town. Col. Lester was speaking when we reached the ground, and was giving the rads and .s traights particular fits. The part of the speech that we heard was good. He was followed by Col. Hardeman, who made an eloquent and rousing effort for Greeley. Before he closed lie put the question to the vast crowd, and old Horace was unanimously elected. The next and best speaker, was our gallant General Young. He did not speak long, but what he said was to the point, and went to the quick.— General Young is a man of fine prac tical sense, and is worthy and well qualified for any position in the gift of the people of Georgia. Long may lie live to enjoy the confidence of the people, and the honors which he so richly merits. He told an anecdote in the course of liis speech, which we thought was very appropriate. He said, “there was, in the upper part of Georgia, a methodist preacher whose name was Collins, and who created in all the country around, a great sensation on account of his eloquence. Every body was flocking to hear him, and his praise was in every one’s mouth.— There was also, in the same neighbor hood, a preacher by the name of Steadman, who was of the hard-shell persuasion. Steadman was requested by many of his neighbors to go and hear the eloquent preacher, but he persistently refused fora longtime; but he filially concluded that he would venture to hear him once. He accordingly went, took a back seat, and gave him a patient hearing. On his return home he was asked what he thought of the great preacher?— 4 Well,’ said Steadman, 4 1 had rather Ik? damned than to be saved by his faith.’ ” “Soit is with the straights, ” said the General, “ they had rather be damned than to be saved by Hor ace Gieeley.” B. Rural Beauties and City Belles.— Country girls are not a whit behind their metropolitan sisters iu the natural elements of loveliness, but it must be conceded that the city belles best understand the art of pre serving and heightening their per sonal beauty. The most perfect fea tures lose half their attraction unless the complexion is properly eared for, and if the pretty girls of the rural dis tricts wish to compete with the “Fairstars” of the fashionable world in refined attractions, they must pay due attention to this important point. They ought to know, for the fact is notorious, that Hagan’s Magnolia Balm imparts to the skin a delicate, pearly appearance, unprodueeable by any other preparation under the sun. No matter how the cuticle may have been roughened by exposure or dis colored by the sun, the Balm will rentier it soft and pliable, and re moves every blemish.
