Verdery’s Concert at the Cartersville Female Seminary cit pel, on Friday evening last, not withstanding the pinching coldness of the night, was tolerably well at tended, and the entertainment was splendid. It was a repetition of her former concert given two weeks be fore, with some slight variations of programme. “Tenting on the old Camp Ground,” alone was worth the price of admission, besides the entire evening’s entertainment was very much enjoyed by all present. We regretted that tho young ladies and Missess. were not graced by a larger aitdieuce, but the inclemency of the weather deterred many of our citi zens from attending. Miss Vetdery roquets us to say that she has paid one-half of the price of the organ, by her concerts, and now has the instrument in her schooi room. Subscriptions from the citi zens, to aid in completing the pur chase, will be thankfully received by her or her music class. OUR market, for the last week or two, has been tolerably well supplied j with fresh fish from the Etowah riv- ! er. NO place in Georgia has been, and is, at this time, better supplied with fresh meats than our little city.— Three regular Boef markets are kept running all the time. Beef, Pork, mutton, sausage, souce, Ac., can be obtained, at these markets, at any and all hours. WE see that our worthy- market- j man and townsman, John Anderson, j is erecting a Beef market on the site of the old Caleb Thompson’s build ing, east side of the Railroad. M ANY new buddings arc still be- | ing credo i in our city, mostly resi dence-, and the cry is still they rise. ; In ahr A every direction we can see new horses go'n - up, and yet the j supply is not equal to the demand.— | Scarcely en cm-Tv bouse in the city. ! Cartersviue sports three sale, feed ; and livery stables; three Drug Stores; ! two .lard ware and Agricultural Ini I plemeut stores; one extensive, plain- j ing, blind, hash, and door factory; j one ear Factory; one foundry, and one Flouring mille; all run by steam; i on® extensive carriage and wagon Factory; besides numerous Dry- Goods and Grocery Stores, Shops, ! We had a pre sing invitation to attend on the occasion, but owing to the i bitter cold weather we did not avail I ourself of the opportunity of eating pork and ’possum. Those who did, got back time enough to thaw oat by ! Sunday morning. They certainly I paid a high price for their fun, in stemming the wintry blast all the j way up there aud back again on the j same day. Col. J. J. Howard, we are glad to loarn, has got his now gin house up, on the site of the one recently burn ed, and will coon be ready for gin ning cotton again. He is one of the -ort who does not idle away time in “grieving over i-piit milk,” but nothing daunt and, he “picks his flint and tries it again.” The Cartersville Car Factory and Building Association, of this city, we learn from Mr. C. B. Wallace, one of the principal managers, has bought the Scofield Foundry and Machine Shop, also of this city, aud design running i‘ m connection with the ear factory. 'Phis association is run by go-ahead men and they intend to make th?> -nterpri.se one of the most ox ten sit in North Georgia. Quite a number of our citizens are anticipating a trip to Atlanta, to be j in attendance upon the North Geor gia Annual Conference during itsses | sion, which convenes in that city, on Wednesday, the 27th iust., and will last through the following Sabbath. Bishop Marvin is expected to pre side, and Bishop Pierce is expected to be present. Our young friend and fellow-citi zen, Samuel B. Jones, has been ad judged, by the Quarterly Conference of the Bartow circuit, as a proper person to preach the gospel, and has accordingly been licensed by the j church. He preached his first scr uion in this place, on Sunday night, i the 10th insi., and evidenced to the congregation tuat he possessed gifts and graces to no mean degree, for the work. He is preparing to enter . the North Ga. Conference at its ap | proaching session. Mr. W. W, Hannon, one of our j worthy citizens and mechanics, died, in this city, on Sabbath last. Mr. Charles Sharpe, a young man ul this city, died on the afternoon ol tlie JBtb Inst., alter a lingering and severe illness. He leaves a widowed mother alone in our midst, to battle with the ills and misfortunes of life —atone to tread life’s thorny maze. May the same invisible and unerring hand that has guided her thus far through the path of life lead her safe ly into the haven of rest at the last. The Tax Collector will be in Car tersville next Saturday, 23rd inst. TIIE EPISCOPAL CHURCH. We learn that the beautiful lot on corner of Market aud Bartow streets, fronting the residence of Dr. W. L. Kirkpatrick’s, was purchased on Sat urday last as the site of the new Episcopal Church, and that the con tract was also let out for building— the woodwork to Messrs Jackson A Cos., and the masonry to Mr. Lyman Chapman. BARNUM’S GREAT SHOW. For nearly or quite half a century the name of P. T. Burnt! m has been a household word both in America and Europe. Matty years ttgo, by liis ex- j tensive ventures and munificent out- i lays of capital to make his entertain-1 meats the most elaborate in the i world, he acquired the sobriquet of ; “Prince of Show men,” a title he has worthily retained. Some two years j ago Mr. Barnum conceived the idea of collecting and equipping an im mense caravansary of men aud ani mals, such tis the world had never seen, and to this end he dispatched agents in every direction in quest of rare novelties and wonderful curiosi ties such as had seldom or never be fore been placed on exhibition. In the organization of this coilossai es j tablishment Mr. Barnum has spared neithes pains nor expense, aud to ' day, after an outlay of nearly one million of dollars, he has procured the most complete, varied and exten sive collection of beasts, birds and i reptiles ever exhibited, so vast in ex- I tent that several trains of ears and ; i engines are necessary for their trans j portatnm, while the groat tents in which Lite exhibitions are given cov er nearly live acres of groufut. Noi j withstanding the magnitude of the exhibition one ticket admits to every | part ol the collossat show, it being i Mr. Burnunts intention to make this j the crowning triumph of his eventful I life, and give all tut opportunity of | seeing “ the Greatest Show on Earth.” So great is the rush to “ Barnum’s,” that the railroad managers find it profitable to run excursion trains to bring in the people. On Wednesday, December 4th, the great Exhibition, or traveling World’s Fair, will be in Cartersville, going to Marietta on the 6th, and to Atlanta on the 6th. Re member Barnuin’s dates and look out for the “ big show.” * New York News. —Special atten tion is directed to the prospectus of The New York Weekly News in another column.
