STANDARD AND EXPRESS. OA., NOV. 28, 18T2 :'.S" ' —— 3 — Agricultural Department. ’ HOME made manures. During the winter months every fcnner should employ as much of his time as possible in saving and prepar ing manures to be distributed early aazt spring. Time and labor thus «uployed will not be spent in vain. Ismftfffr* thet it is far batter to im prova the land which you already guvs in cultivation than to clear more to be worn out in the same way as the old. Add something to the com post heap every day, and in a few months you will be surprised to see how large it has rprown. Make heaps •f vegetable matter, of any kind, wherever you can find it; haul muck from the swamps, the river and creek banks, mix a little lime with it and It will make excellent food for your next crop. It is a good plan to keep your lots and stables well littered with leaves or straw, and rake this matter together in heaps, mixed with lime, as *oon as it becomes wet and unfit for bedding for your stock.— “Nothing” should be “last on a farixi •r’B barn-yard.” Save and make all the manure you can, and you will, by this means, soon make “two blades of grass grow where but one grtw before,” all over your farm. Don’t leave your farms because they are poor, and move to the West, but goto work, make an acre rich at a time, and you will soon have a good term to support you in your old age, and to leave, together with a good example, to your children. TAKE CARE OF YOUR OXEN. An the horse disease is still raging, and in likely to become universal, the question arises, what will the farmers do for stock to plow next spring, if the horse malady shall prevail all •ver tho country and prove fatal in many cases? We know of no better substitute for the horse than the ox. A pair of oxen can Ik; made .to do good work in preparing the soil for a crop, and every good farmer knows that a proper preparation of the ground is the great secret of success ful terming, for if the ground is well broken in the winter or early spring, the cultivation of the crop may be su perficial and imperfect, and yet an abundant harvest may bo gathered. Those who have oxen, then, should take eajre of them and have them rwuly for any emergency that may happen. Not one of this class of an imals should be sent to the butcher, but should be stabled, fed and kept ready to take tho place of the horse, at the plow, the cart, the wagon, and everywhere that is practicable, if nec essary. PLANT SHADE TREES. Now is the time to plant shade trees. Let not tins important work be neglected. Trees are beautiful, pleasant, and great promoters of health. They should spread their friendly amts around our dwellings MicJoMurcs, along our sido-walka, about the public square, nud every where except where they would bo ia the way. Nothing adds more to Ui( tMfuuty iuxi comfort of m Kt)lii«nt‘B ©r town than green lawns and shady tr««, and yet in the great scramble for money, these things are often for gotten or neglected. LOOK AFTER YOUR WHEAT CROP. Every farmer knows that wheat requires a dry soil, and that it often happens that our.best lands make the poorest yield, on account of its being too mohtt. The remedy for this evil is obvious. Bed up your low lands be * ~«oii bow your wheat, in order you have o , v it; or if way yet correct your mistake, iu a great extent, by running large water furrows at convenient distances apart, to receive and carry off the excessive Mius of winter and spring. Adopt thia plan, and see if you are uot well rewarded for your labor B. CARE. OF STQCK. It is every man’s moral duty to take proper care of his stock. It is Good warm beds, during the cold weathor, are ewentlal to their comfort and health ; aad he who owns an animal and neg lects to provide a comfortable pla *e tor it to rest, is wanting in true sen sibility, and is blind to his own inter est. A hog will even do better when protected from the cold, and it is a shame for a faithful herse, ox, or cow to be compelled to lie down, as many do, on the cold, hard,* damp or wet ground. And how common is it to see poor dumb brutes exposed to the pitiless storms of winter, without even a shelter to stand under. Such treatment is not only shameful and cruel, but it is sinful; and not only is It shameful and cruel and sinful, but it is miserably bad policy, for one good home well fed and protected, is better than two that are half-starved and otherwise mistreated. And one eow properly cared for is worth more than several that are neglected. a man has more stock than he can taka care of, he should sell, kill, or £v« away a part, and do his duty by IM mat. By so doing he as well as his itock, would be a gainer in the sad. Our faithftil domestic animals should be kindly treated, not only for their sakes but for our own; and we should remember that while they are «|epcndent upon us, we are depend ant upon One “whose tender mercies ara over all his works,” and who marks even the sparrow’s fall. Ths merciful alone shall attain mercy, “and the angel of mercy hath no tear to shed when a cruel man is damned.” B. MOW TO DRIVE A YOUNG HORSE. In teaching a young horse to drive well, do not hurry to see how fast he trot. Keep pace clear and dis tinct from the other; that is, in walk ing, make him walk, and do not al low him to trot. While trotting, be equally careful that he keeps steady at his pace, and do not allow him to slackeu into a walk; the reins, while driving, should be kept sntlg, and when pushed to the top of his speed, keep them well in haua, that he may learn to bear upon the bit, so that when going at a high rate of Speed, he can be held at his pace, but do not allow him to pull too hard, for it is net only unpleasant, but makes it difficult to manage him. HOGS. v. As soon as your hogs are sufticient iy ihttoned, kill them, and do not trililjSr the moon to get right. They kindly in cold weather. ■L J—m Professional and Business Ctrdfi jouk w. worrosD. momi w. milsbb WOFFORD fit MILNER, ATTORNEYS AT LAW, CA.UTERSYILLE, OA. FKicK op .turn, Bank Block. C. Much serious sickness and suffering is prevent ed by their timely use; and every family should have them on hand for their protection and relief, when required. Long experience has proved them to be the saf ost, surest, and best of aU the fills with which the market abounds. By their occasional use, the blood is purified, the corruptions of the sys tem expelled, obstructions removed, and the whole machinery of life restored to its healthy activity. Internal organs which become clogged aud sluggish are cleansed by Ayer’s fills, and stimulated into action. Thus incipient disease is changed into health, the value of which change, when reckoned on the vast multitudes who enjoy it, can hardly be computed. Their sugar coating makes them pleasant to take, and preserves their virtues unimpaired for any length of time, so that they are ever fresh, and perfectly reliable. Although searching, they are mild, and operate without disturbance to the constitution, or diet, or occupation. Full directions are given on the wrapper to each box, how to uso them as a Family Physic, and for the following complaints, which these Pills rapidly cure For Dyspepsia or Indigestion, HitlvM ness, languor and less of Appetite, they should be taken moderately to stimulate the stom ach, and restore its healthy tone and action. For liver Complaint and its various symp toms, Bilions Heartache. Sick Head, ache, Jaundice or Breen Sickness, Bil ions Colic and Billons fevers, they should be judiciously taken for each case, to correct the diseased action or remove the obstructions which cause it. For Dysentery or Diarrhoea, but one mild dose*is generally required. . _ . For Rheumatism, Boat, Bravel, Pal pitatioa of the Heart, Pain in tbe Side, Back and tolsi, they should be contin uously taken, as required, to change the diseased action of the system. With such change those complaints disappear. For Dropsy and Dropsical Swellings, they should be taken in large and frequent doses to produce the effect of a drastic purge. For Suppression, a large dose should be taken, as it produces the desired effect by sym pathy. Asa Dinner Pill, take one or two Pills to promote digestion and relieve the stomach. An occasional dose stimulates the stomach and bowels, restores the appetite, and invigorates the system. Hence it is often advantageous where no serious derangement exists.
