STANDARD AND EXPRESS CABTIWVTLLE, GA., T>EC. 5. 1972 Agricultural Department. CHARCOAL AND BRIMSTONE FOR SWINE. Ia every hog pen there should boa trough, in which there should be de posited weekly, a quantity of charcoal. The hog eagerly devours this sub- i stance, and is greatly benefited and i strengthened by its u-to. It prevents many unpleasant diseases, and coat rib- i utea largely to the fatty secretions. — i A few spoouaful of pulverized brim- i stone or flour of sulphur, in n little dough, should b# administt red as of- ; ten as once a fortnight to swine while j fattening. A LESSON IN FEEDING STOCK. A correspondent of the if doe Far mer having made the o it■ incut that among the valuable lessons tout the paßt winter had taiigli hit iin f .'nlinc stock, was the Conviction that be it;.a beratofirt-w ‘fed nearly double the | amount of hiy needed,’ ano li-r wri j ter for the saute p J> r c nuiuei.ts as follows on his remark *: If feeders have learned, as in my no doubt have done, that it is better b feed less hay and suhstitu f *' meal 01 I SOinc other concentrated food in pi.a:. ■ of the hay withhold, then the lesson ; will not i e controvert and; but if they , mean what they sty, that they have been feeding t<>o mucti hay to tit 3lotk, (have lx eu giving muco inoie nutii meut than was u- edod,) it i-> quite an- ! oilier thing. I have leavue I no »ucti lesson. I have learned (from toe ex- : perience of others) that stock c.m be wintered (c«n be kept alive) o.i much less hay th in has usually been fed to them. Wbeu you want stock to grow dur ing the winter, oxi rt to lay oo fat, cows to give an abundant flow of milk, you must give them something to do it with. Muscle’ fat, milk, are all iu the fad given, be that grain or hay. It comes from no other source, and can be obtained in no other way. A certain amount of nutriment is req hi ed to support vital. .y in an animal.— If you get growth, fat, or milk, it must come from nutriment digested and as similated in excess of what is required to sustain vitality. If you desire rap id growth, much fat, or an abundant flow of milk, you must feed liberally, und at the same time teed such food as will keep all the organs of the ani mal in a healthy, uctive condition, that tiny may be enabled to digest and assimilate tbo greatest possible amount of food. Milk producers un derstand this well, and you huve not heard them say they have learned to keep their cows on a small amount of food. They all feed shorts, and feed them not to Have lmy, but to make their cows cat more liny. Shorts are heal thy food, and promote the health and activity of all the organs of digestion and assimilation, and thus the cow is enabled to convert more hay into milk I have been feeding cotton seed meal with the greatest satisfaction. It sav ed me no hay, but it gave the cows a voracious appetite, and that appetite, created by a healthy digestion, con verted a largo quantity of hay iuto milk. My experience has taught me, and last winter confirmed it, that the prof it in keeping stock comes from the food digested and assimilated in ex cess of what is required to support vi tality, and the more wo can get a sin gle animal to digest and assimilate, and therefore convert into the desired product, the greater the profit. HOW MONEY IS MADE BY FARMING. Much labor is done on farms that is not farming in t tie true sense. By such labor no money is ever made. A man may support Inmself and family, keep out of debt, and have a few dol lars in his pocket by practicing the most stringent economy. If he n oth erwise than industrious and sober, he is on the down grade with loose brakes, and the end is noon reached. But firming, in its true sense, is a profes sion equal to that of law or medicine, ad needs equal study, mental capaci ty, and intelligently directed labor to co umand success in it. The principles which underlie the practice of the true farmer must be well understood, and a steady, consist ent course of operations mud. I>c tal lowed. Having thoroughly ihe nature and capacity ot the sod in possesses, and choses the rotation most suitable, and the stock m >st profitably kept mi it, ho does not sweive from .us chosen course but in good markets and bad raises his regular crops, and keeps ins land in regular increasing fertility.— No special cry tempts or affriguts him. He does not talk dairying tins season o. crops the uvxt, but doubtless, if any p rticular product bo in demand ami bung a good price, lie lias some of it to seil and reaps a share of the advan tages. ile saves as much money as some n. n make by caro and economy iu j, . rebasing and preserving tools, seeds, i.i mures and machines, and his busi i: ss habits and constant readiness for a 1 occasions give him seasonable sc . ntv against the effects of adverse s asons and bad wea her. Always prepared, ho is never too late, ami always calm, he is never too s ,on, and thus, ‘taking time by the f o'clock,’’ he lias the stern old tyrant at bis command, arid turns him at his 11. He has no losses and Ins gains rd steady. PAYMENT OF COST OF ADVER TISEMENTS IN ADVANCE. Wo beg leave to call the attention of our county officers and others in terested, to the following act passed by the last Legislature, entitled an act to require tiro payment of cost in certain cases: Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly, That from and af ter the passage of this act, no sheriff or deputy sheriff in this State shall bo required to advertise the property’ of any’ defendant in li. fa. for sale un til the cost of such advertisement shall have been iirst paid by’ the plaintiff in fi. fa., his agent or attor ney; provided, that when any such party plaintiff, or his agent or attor ney for him, shall make and file an affidavit in writing, that owing to his poverty he is unable to pay such cost, then it shall be the duty of said sher iff or his deputy to proceed as now required by law. Section 2 repeals conflicting laws. Approved August 24,1872. Sheriff sales must be paid for in ad yance or noinsertion.—Stan. & Ex. A negro in Coffee county who bet two dollars and seventy-five cents that could ride a roan mule with a pine burr under the mule’s tail, lost the money. He was followed to the tomb by a large and enthusiastic audience. [Harris. Ayer’s Cherry Pectoral, For Disc ties of the Throat and Loacs, such m Coughs, Colds, Whooping Couch, Bronchitis, Asthma, and Consumption. r discoveries of modem science, few are of more real value to mankind than this ef fectual remedy for all diseases of the Throat and Lungs. A vast trial of its virtues, throughout this and other countries, has shown that it does surely and effectually control them. The testimony'of our test cit»- reas, of ail classes, establishes the fact, that Chkruy Pectoral will and does relieve and cure the afflicting disorders of the Throat and Lungs beyond any other medicine. The meet dangerous’ affections of the Pulmonary Organs yield to its power; and cases of Consump tion, cured by this preparation, are public ly known, so remarkable as hardly to he be lieved, were they not proven beyond dispute. Asa remedy it is’ adequate, on which the public raav rely for full protection. By curing Coughs, the forerunners ot more serious disease, it saves unnumbered lives, and an amount of suffering not to be computed. It challenges trial, and con vinces the most sceptical. Every family should keep it on hand as a protection against the early and unperceived attack of Pulmonary Affections, which are easily met at first, but which become incurable, and too often fatal, if neglected. Ten der lungs need this defence; and it is unwise to be without it. Asa safeguard to children, amid the distressing diseases which beset the Throat and Chest of childhood, Cherry Pectoral is invaluable; for, by its timely use, multi tudes are rescued from premature graves, and saved to the love and affection centred on them. It acts speedily and surely against ordinary colds, securing sound and health-restoring sleep. No one will suffer troublesome Influenza and pain ful Bronchitis, when they know how easily they can be cured. Originally the product of long, laborious, and successful chemical investigation, no cost or toil is spared in making every bottle in the utmost possible perfection. It may be confidently re lied upon as possessing all the virtues it has" ever exhibited, and capable of producing cures as memorable as the greatest it has ever effected. PREPARED BY Dr. J. C. AYER & CO., Lowell, Mass., Practical and Analytical Chemists. BOLD BY ALL DRUGGISTS EVERYWUSER. Ayer’s Ague Cure, For Fever and Ague, Intermittent Fever, Chill Fever, Bemittent Fever, Dumb Ague, Periodical or Bilious Fever, Ac., and indeed all tho affections which arise from malarious, marsh, or miasmatio poisons. No one remedy is louder 18$ called for by the necessities of t the American people than a R'l 8&;/ sure and safe cure for Fever PI tj*£4 J an<l A S UC - Such we are now enabled to offer, with a perfect M certainty that it will eradicate “ the disease, and with assur ance, founded ou proof, that no harm can ariso from its use in any quantity. That which protects from or prevents- this dis order must be of immense service in the com munities where it prevails. Prevention is better than cure, for the patient escapes the risk which he must run in violent attacks of this baleful dis temper. This “(Jure” expels the miasmatic poison of Fever and Ague from the system, and prevents the development of the disease, if '•.ken on the first approach of its premonitory gymmx*..,- It is not only the best remedy ever yet discovered n,. u.;, of complaints, but ■ tilfjo the Tho imp* Hiin* ply for a dollar brings it within the reach or everybody; and in bilious districts, where Fever and Ague prevails, everybody should have it, and use it freely, both for cure and pro tection. It is honed this price will place it within the reach of all —the poor as "well as the rich. A great superiority of this remedy over any other ever discovered for the speedy and certain cure of intermittent is, that it contains no Qui nine or mineral; consequently it produces no quinism or other injurious effects whatever upon the constitution. Those cured by it are left as healthv as if they had never had the disease. Fever and Ague is not nlone the consequence of the miasmatic poison. A great variety of dis orders arise from its irritation, among which are Neuralgia, Rheumatism, Gout, Headache, Blindness Toothache. Earache, Catarrh, Astir ma, Palpitation. Painful Affection of the Spleen, Hysterics, Pain in the Bowels, Colic, Paralysis, and derangement of the Stomach, nil of which, when originating in this cause, put on the in termittent type, or become periodical. Tills “Cure” expels the poison from the blood, and consequently cures them all alike. It is an in valuable protection to immigrants and persons travelling or temporarily residing in the mala rious districts. If taken occasionally or daily while'exposed to the infection, that will be ex creted from the system, and cannot accumulate iu sufficient quantity to ripen into disease. Hence it is even more valuable for protection than cure; and few will ever suffer from Inter mittents if they avail themselves of the protec tion this remedy affords. For Liver Complaints, arising from torpid ity of the Liver, it is an excellent remedy, stim ulating the Liver into healthy activity, and pro ducing many truly remarkable cure3, where other medicines fail.
