STANDARD AND EXPRESS ■ nH f i TANARUS, tABTERSVILLE, GA., DEC. 5, 1872. •——-~‘ i ~~ ——■— — „si..vi..~- Agricultural Department HOWTO PLANT APPLE TREES. It is astonishing how much diversi ty of opinion there is and has been, about the distance apart to plant ap ple trees. After an experience of fif teen years, I would plant apple trees not less than twenty-four feet apart, from that to thirly-two feet. Apple trees planted sixteen feet apart, when thoy get large enough to are found by experience to be entirely too Bear each other, the limbs interlock, Bod it is difficult to get through the Orchard with a wagon; and the want of light and room causes the leaves to fill from the lower limbs, and the oth •r trees become unhealthy. Young orchards should be cultivat ed like a corn field until the trees he gin to bear, and tbero is no belter crop to grow among young trees than ooru. Let the row of trees have tin ground of the row to themselves, and then cultivate the row of trees the same aa a row of corn, but let it stand, as it forms a protection to the trees in winter. After the trees begin to bear, seed the giound to clover —clean, no blue grass or Mmothy mixed with it—and don’t take the clover off for hay, but either turn in the hogs or •ut the clover and let it rot under tin trees; and whenever the clover gets crowded out by blue grass or , plow it up and seed down again with clover. This is not theory with me. but it is based on observation and ■uccessful practice. —lowa Hurru'drad. SALT ON*WIIEAT. John Burgen, of Palmyra, Illinois, writes to the Rock River Farmer:— About the 20th of March last I sowed ten acres of wheat. On two and one half acres of this piece I put one bar rel of salt. The whole piece was subject to the same cultivation, sown with a lower, cultivated and harrowed once. On the two and a half acres the salt was sown broadcast and cross harrow ed. Now for the result. The piece sown with salt yielded twenty-three bushels to the acre; the balance twelve. Whore the salt had been sprinkled I «Uo found the berry to be larger and f lumper, and the straw yellower and stronger. Ido not know if the result would always be as favorable; but I •.rtuiuly will try it again, and advise my brother fanners to try the same experiment. To Keep Kats out of Oats.—l be -1 <:ve rats urea little superstitious. Y u know the.r eyes are in the top of lit ir heads. I tried the experiment i.i the following manner; I put five or mx shocks in an empty crib for earl) feeding. I fouud the rats were cutting them into jiblots. One of my ueigh boiH told me to scatter strong dry ash es among my oats, and the rats would not trouble them. I packed awaj ninety dozen in the same crib, and sprinkled a half bushel of dry ashes with them. I fed out the oats, and not a sign of a rat was among them. I found u poor little mouse crying witb sore eyes. I urn going to try it on my eorn. E. B. B. Wind Colic in Houses. —The best and cheapest remedy that I have ever known for colic in horses is to take a bunch of cotton rags, put them in an old tin pan, and set them cn fire so that th y will smoko but not blaze. Hold it near the horse’s nose, so he will draw the smoko into his nostrils. Do this for about fifteen minutes, the nose will sweat, the wind pass off, the horse will shako himstlf and may be lie down and roll, and will eat his mesa 1 11 right. Many who have tried it can testify to this. Western Rural. FOR HOUSEWIVES. Jumbles. Make a dough of five pounds of flour, one pound butter, two pounds sugar, six eggs. Roll out the dough. Sprinkle over with white sugar, and fry them to a light brown in hot lard, PEACH PUDDING. Take a can of good flavored peach es, and cut the fruit fine. Add one dessert plate of bread crumbs, three •ggs, one half pound of suet, chopped very fine, one nutmeg and a glass of wine. Serve it with wine sauce. HOW TO USE STRONG BUTTER. If strong butter is melted and skim med well, and then turned off so that the salt is left, it makes a very good fat to fry doughnuts in. Lard can be mixed with it in equal parts, but it is just as good used alone. GINGERBREAD PUDDING. Two aud one-half cups flour, one and one-half cups molasses, one cup sour milk, butter size of an egg, tea spoonful soda, two teaspoonfuls each of giuger, cinnamon, cloves, one nut meg, a little salt; raisins if you choose. TO DYE PINK. Take three parts of cream of tartar und oue of cochineal, nicely rubbed together; tie a teaspoonful in a mus tard bag. Rut this with a quart of boiling water; dip in the articles to be colored; previously cleaned aud dip ped in allum water; if wished stiff, put m a little gum arabic. ORANGE MINCE. Did any of your readers ever eat it? It is delicious. Peel and remove the seeds from sweet Havana orauges; slice, aud cut the slices iuto small pieces with a sharp knife; to these add lemon chopped tine, without the peel, iu the proportion of half a lemon to six oranges; and a finely grated co coauut may be added if available aud desired; make a thick sharp syrup by dissolving aud boiling for ten minutes, a pound of sugar in a pint of water; peur this syrup on the fruit; let it cool, and serve in a glass dish. APPLE SHUFFLE. Always stew the apples nicely, then adding a little grated lemon peel and ju : ee, and omitting batter; line the aides and bottom of a baking dish with them. Make a boiled custard with oue pint of milk and two eggs, flavor ing with lemon and sweetening it to taste. Let it cool and then pour into the cectrc of the dish. Beat the white of two eggs to a stiff froth (they can be left out of the custard), spread them over the top, sprinkle white su gar all over them, and brown in the oven. The stewed apples should be about half an inch thick on the bot tom and sides of the pudding dish. SAUSAGE MEAT. A good recipe for sausage meat is ometimes difficult to find just when it is wanted. Here is one that we think will meet all the requirements: Take all the spare meat and tenderloins from your pork and grind it in a sau sage grinder, or chop it. Season it highly with pepper, salt, and powder ed sage. Boil one or two pods of red pepper and pour the tea over it; work it all up. Cook a small piece to try it, and if not seasoned high enough, add what it wants. Pack in a jar, or stuff skins with it after they have been soak - ed and cleaned nicely. Hang them ap to dry. Smoking makes them hard. Ayer's-: ' | Hair Vigor, For restoring to Gray Hair its natural Vitality and Color. which is at v once agreeable, ; A healthy, and V"effectual for ! preserving the j hair. Jt soon j *\ ■' or gray hair \ ■ 1° original color, with the i gloss and freshness of youth. Thin hair is thickened, falling hair checked, and baldness often, though not always, j cured by its use. Nothing can restore the haii where the follicles are de stroyed, or the glands atrophied and decayed; but such as remain can be saved by' this application, and stimu lated into activity, so that anew growth of hair is produced. Instead of fouling the hair with a pasty sedi ment, it will keep it clean and vigorous. Its occasional use will prevent the hair from turning gray or falling off, and consequently' prevent baldness. The restoration of vitality it gives to the scalp arrests and prevents the forma tion of dandruff, which is often so un cleanly and offensive. Free from those deleterious substances which make some preparations dangerous and inju rious to the hair, the Vigor can only benefit but not harm it. If wanted merely for a HAIR DRESSING, nothing else can be found so desirable. Containing neither oil nor dye, it does not soil white cambric, and yet lasts Jong on the hair, giving it a rich, glossy lustre, and a grateful perfume. Prepared by Dr. J. C. Ayer & Cos., Practical and Analytical Chemists, LOWELL, MASS. Ayer’s Sarsaparilla Ji J| as one of the* most ever discover. -1 I. -r utation, based on its intrinsic virtues, and sustained by its re markable cures. So mild as to be safe and beneficial to children, and yet so searching as to effectually purge out the great cor ruptions of the blood, such as the scrofulous and syphilitic contamination. Impurities, or diseases that have lurked in the system for years, soon yield to this powerful anti dote, and disappear. Hence it s wonderful cures, many of which are publicly known, of Scrofula, and all scrofulous diseases, Ulcers, Eruptions, and eruptive dis orders of the skin, Tumors, Blotches, Boils, Pimples, Pustules, Sores, St. Anthony’s Fire, Rose or Erysipe las, Tetter, Salt Rheum, Scald Head, Ringworm, and internal Ul- cerations of (he Uterus, Stomach, and Liver. It also cures other com plaints, to which it would not seem especi ally adapted, such as Dropsy, Dyspep sia, Fits, Neuralgia, Heart Disease, Female Weakness, Debility, and Leucorrhoea, when they are manifesta tions of the scrofulous poisons. It is an excellent restorer of health and strength in the Spring. By renewing the appetite and vigor of the digestive organs, it dissipates the depression and listless lan guor of the season. Even where no disorder appears, people feel better, and live longer, for cleansing the blood. The system moves on with renewed vigor and a uew lease of life. PREPARED RY Dr. J. C.
