Four locomo tives arc daily employed in propelling her manufacturing department outside of that driv en by sinew and muscle. The merchants and business men of Carters ville are generally comiug up to the support of our paper with commendable liberality, which argues well for them and the paper too. Is it any Wonder that the people of the south are poor! 1 Coming rrp from Atlanta a few nights since on the cars, we met up with a known gentleman of enterprise, who asked us the oft propounded question “Is there any iron ore around Cartersville ?” We told him that it was in inexhuustable supply—that we Lur ried our dead in a mountain of it—that we dug their graves with imported iron spades and picks — that w ■ Lurried them in imported iron coffins, and erected over their graves momi kents and tombs made of imported marble.— “ Well, well,” said ho, “is it any wonder that the people of the south are poor ?” C.vktkksVillk, Ga., March 25th, 1878. Die undersigned eitizeus of Cartersville hereby call a meeting of the citizens of the * hy, to be held in the City Hall, at 10 o’clock, on Monday, the 81st day of March, 1873, when blatters of deep importance to the welfare of °ur people will be considered. We believe .this is the only House in the State where they’ have a correct idea of “cheap luxuries.” A room perfectly clean, neat, well-appointed and comfortable; a nice hot beefsteak, served on a heated plate; a cup of ooflee, hot, strong and clear as cognac brandy; a dining room, well ventilated and yet not cold; these, and we might mention others, are really luxuries that cost but little, and are yet rarely found even at our best hotels. We arc half inclined to take back all we have recently said iu regard to the return of spring. The tsuoa is falling tins (Wednesday) morning and if there is any poetry left in our soul, the cold north-west winds are likely to blow it all out before night. AVell, we must take things as they come, and patiently wait for time to correct those evils and inconveniences which are unavoidable. Nevertheless, we cannot help exclaiming, “Winter! winter, haste away, For long, too long, has been thy stay.’’ DEATH OF A GOOD CITIZEN. We are pained to learn that Mr. J. L. Galt, a much esteemed citizen of Cherokee county, died on the 18th iust., at his home near Can ton. For many years Air. Galt had been a con sistent member of the Baptist Church, had long been a resident of the county, and was loved and respected by a large circle of friends and acquaintances, lie had been a great suf ferer for a long time, but bore liis afflictions with becoming patience and resignation. Now “life’s fitful dream is over and he sleeps well.” We tender bis bereaved family our heart-felt sympathy, and commend them to Him who is the friend of the orphan and widow. MUSIC. ii occurs te us tliat our city is sadly in need of music. We want some dulcet strains to re lieve the du/f\ less of the monotony that hangs around and about us. Wc are weary of hear ing so much about money and busiucss, and want to have our minds and hearts turned oc casionally to something else. AVhere is the Brass Band that played so well a year ago? Can’t it be reorganized and enliven us again, from time to time, with soul-stirring music ? The opening spring suggests music and love, and many a victim of Cupid’s dart can now truthfully say with Sliakspeare, “If music be the food of love, play on and give me excess of it, that, surfeiting, the appetite may sicken and so die. That strain again ! oit had a dying fall 1 It came o’er my ear like the sweet breath of the south, breathing upon a bank of violets, stealing and giving odor.” A JUST BUT WITHERING REBUKE. The selfishness, self-esteem, want of brother ly kindness, of sympathy and charity, which is characteristic of many of the church members of Cartersville, has often been tlie subject of remark, and on last Sabbath the pastor of the Methodist church preached an eloquent and appropriate sermon from the Text, “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fuitill the law of of Christ.” The preacher kindly alluded to the deplorable want of Christian love and sym pathy among the members of the church, and in concluding the services read the liymu iu the third verse of which occurs the following language: “Wo share our mutual woes, Our mutual burdens bear, And often for each other Hews The sympathizing tear.” “Flow many,” said lie, “ean adojit the lan guage of this stanza? Will you pardon me : for repeating it again ?” After reading it the second time he said, “You will now please sing the hymn, omitting the third verse!” Delays are Dangerous. That poor, emaciated Consumptive, who is now beyond all hope of recovery, might now he hale and hearty had he not neglected that slight cougli. Its symtoms are almost infinite in their variety, and the forlorn and despon dent victims of the disease often fancy them selves the prey, in turn, of every known mala dy. This is due, in part, to the close sympa thy which exists between the stomach and the brain, and in part also to the fact that any dis turbance of the digestive function necessarily disorders the liver, the bowels and the nervous system, and affects, to some extent, the quality of the blood. A medicine that, like Ilostet ter’s Bitters, not only tones the stomach, hut at the same time controls the li.ver, produces a regular habit of body, braces the nerves, puri ties the fluids and “ministers to a mind diseas ed,” therefore the true and only specific for chronic indigestion. Sueli is the operation of ibis famous vegetable restorative. It not only cures dyspepsia, but also all concomitants and consequences. Moreover, it is invaluable as a preventive of indigestion. No one who choos es to take half a wiuegiassfut ©f this agreeable appetizer and stomachic habitually three times a day will ever be troubled with oppression after eating, nausea, sour eructations, or any other indications of a want of vigor in the di gestive and assimilating organs. The debility and languor superinduced by liot weather arc immediately and permanently relieved by the Bitters, and persous who are constitutionally inclined to look upon life “as through a glass, darkly,” will be apt to Lake a brighter and more hopeful view of the situation under the gQiiiel influence of this wholesome medicinal stimulant.
