THE STANDARD & EXPRESS CAIITERSVILLE : THURSDAY, APRIL 10th, 1873. POET E V . WHEN YOU'RE DOWN. What legion of “friends” always bless us When golden success lights your way ! How they smile as they softly address us, So cordial, good humored and gay ! Rut Oh! when the sun of prosperity Hath set, then how quickly they frown, And.cry out, in tones of severity, Kick the mm! don't you sea he is down ! What though when you knew not a s rrow Your heart w;us open as day, And “your friends" when they wanted to bor row, You’d oblige—and ne’er a->k them to “pay ? ’ What t hough not a soul you e’er slighted, As you meandered about through the town . Your “friends’’ becotn ■ very near sighted. And don’t scan to see you when down ! When you’er “ up,” you are loudly exalted, And traders all sing out your praise ; When you’re down, you have greatly default ed, And they really “don’t fancy your ways.’ Your style was “tip top” when you’d money, So sings every sucker and clown ; Rut now, ’tis exceedingly funny, Things are altered, because you’re dowu ! Oh, give nii* the heart that forever Is free from the world’s selti-di rust, And the soul whose high, noble endeavor Is to raise fallen men from the dust; And when, in adversity’s ocean, A victim is likely to drown, All hail to the friend whose devotion Will lift up a man when lie’s “down.” WIIY TRUTH (JOES NAKED. List to a tale well worth the car Os all how wit and sense admire : Invented —it is very clear — Some ages prior to Matthew Prior. Falsehood and Truth, “upon a time,” One day in June’s delicious weather, (’Tw.is in a distant age and clime), Like sisters, took a walk together. On, on their merry Way they took, Through fragrant wood and verdent meadow, To where a beach beside a brook Invited rest beneath a shadow. There, sitting in the pleasant shade, Upon the mar’gins grassy matting, (A velvet cushion ready made), The young companions fell to chatting. Now, while in voluble discourse. On this and that their tongues were running, As habits bids each speak -perforce, The one is frank ; the other cunning, Falsehood, at length impatient grown With sandals of her own creation, Said, “since we two are quite alone, And nicely screened from observation, Suppose in this delightful rill— While all around is so propitious. We lake a hath '! Said Truth, “1 will— A bath, I’m sure, will be delicious !” At this her robe she east aside, And in the stream that ran before her She plundgcd -like Ocean's happy bride— As naked as her mother bore her ! Falsehood at leisure now undressed, Put oil the robes her limbs that hamper, •And having donned Truth,s snowy vest, }hin oil as last as she could scamper; Sim-e then the subtle maid, in sooth, Kxpcrt in lies and shrewd evasions, lias borne the honest name of Truth, And wears her clothes on all occasions, While Truth, disdaining to appear In Falsehood's petticoat and bodice, Still braves all eyes from year to year, As naked as a marble goddess ! WOMAN'S WORK. Darning little stockings For restless little feet; Washing little faces, To keep them fresh and sweet, Hearing llible lessons, Teaching catechism, Praying for salvation From heresy and schism. Woman’s work! Sewing on the buttons, Overseeing rations, Soothing with a kind word, Others’ lamentations; (lidding clumsy Bridgets, Coaxing sullen cooks, Entertaining company, And reading recent books, Woman's work ! Burying out of sight Her own unhealing smarts : Letting in tlie sunshine On other clouded hearts ; Binding up the wounded, Healing up the sick ; Bravely marching onward Though dangers dark and thick. Woman’s work! Leading little children And blessing manhood’s years ; Showing to the sinful llow God’s to rgiv encss cheers; Scattering sweet roses Along another’s path ; Smiling by the wayside, Content with what she hath, Woman’s work! Letting fall her own tears Where only God can see, Wiping oif another’s With tender sympathy ; Learning by experience, Teaching by example: Yearning lor the gateway Golden, pearly, ample, Woman’s work! At last coineth silence— A day of deep repose, Her locks smoothly braided, Upon her breast a rose ; Lashes resting gently Upon the marble cheek ; A look of blessed peace Upon the forehead meek ; The hands softly folded, The kindly pulses still; The cold lips Know no smile; The noble hearts no thrill; Her pillow needs no smoothing, Bhe eraveth for no care— Love’s tenderest entreaty Wakes no response there, A grove in the valley, Tears, bitter sobs, regret; Another lesson taught, That life may not forget; A face forever hidden, A race forever run ; “Dust to dust,” the preacher saictb, And Woman’s work is done. MISCELLANEOUS. A splendld baby carriage will be altered lor the finest baby exhibited at the next annual fair in Macon— The baby to be under the age of 15 months. An Indiana woman is mad because her husband took her very best sheet to hang himself with, when there was an old clothes line in the cellar which was good enough for the pur pose. She says he was always ex travagant, and too lazy to go in the cellar for anything! A Louisville man who had only been acquainted with his girl two nights attempted to kiss her at the gate. In his dying deposition he told the doctor, just as he kissed her the earth slid from under his feet, and his soul went out of his mouth, while his head touched the stars. Later dispatches show that what ail ed him was the old man’s boot. Four little negroes on the planta tion of Mr. J. A. Mosely, Putnam county, died last week. The oldest about ten years, told his father that he and five others found, while out in the old field a day or two previous, a dead hare which they took home, broiled and ate. The whole six were takian sick soon after, four of whom have died as stated above, the other two still very ill. The New York Ileratd, which has all along been a zealous supporter of the Grant administration, “With the expiration of this debauched and degraded Congress passes awav the Republican party.— No continued professions of virtue and reform can save the political organization whose leading members, with a large ma jority in both Houses of Congress, have thus made themselves responsi ble as a party for the offenses they were too cowardly or too base to con demn.
