Carroll, the proprietor, Is prosecuting this enterprise with great energy, and we may already pronounce the affair a decided success. It will be a great couvenienee to our whole people, and all who can should at once heartily patronize it. Mr. I’. H. Brewster, Assistant, is absent from the county, and 8. H. Many of our most intelligent and influential citizens endorse the idea zealously, and wo predict for It a strong - and decided influence in the county. We understand that a large, handsome and < ommodious hotel is about to lie constructed on the lot facing the depot, known as the -Marsh lot. Several gentlemen of ready means have undertaken it, and it will not bo long be fore a building suitably arranged for the ac commodation of the traveling public, as well as for all w ho may Me disposed to spend dinar summer months in our midst, will he erected, under the care of efficient and experienced managers. We congratulate the towu upon this needed project, and hope and believe that there will be no delay in the thorough carry ing out of the plans of the undertakers. It is suggested that there are a sufficient number of well informed gentlcmeu in this place, who can easily, by arrangement, give a succession of lectures in the town Hall, on some stated night of tlie week, on scientific subjects to their mutual improvement and gratification, and to the benefit of the commu nity. We are glad to see this matter zealously mooted, and hope, by auother moon, to have ithe pleasure of seeing them assembled in the town Hall. The material is here, and it only needs determination and concert to carry it out. Will not Messrs. L. J. Davies and Theo dore Smith set the ball in motion ? Let us have the Lectures. The members of the Masonic fraternity composed or brethren from lodges at Mariet ta, Aeworth, Pine Log, Adairsville, Kingston, Stilesboro, Rockmart, and Cartersville, and others, celebrated St. John’s day in Carters* vitlc, on Tuesday, the 24th iust. Procession was formed with a tine band of music to the Baptist church when, after preliminary servi ces, a discourse was delivered by Dr. Love, of Atlanta, in behalf of this ancient order, chiefly giving a historical argument in favor of the institution. The procession then returned to the town Hall, where a bounteous dinner was spread before the brethren returning from la bor to refreshment. The day was clear and the communication ugrvoalde. Long live the order. Our old and long tried friend and fellow citizen, W. C. Green, is running the family grocery store lately occupied by C. C. Mans field, and asks his friends to call and see him, and bestowg at least, a reasonable share of their patronage. He keeps on hand a spleudid -stock of plain and fancy family groceries, all fresh and nice, and sells them as cheap as any grocery house in the city. He is also follow ing his old trade of Repairing nud Renovating Watches and Clocks, and making, repairing and cleaning Jewelry* <&c. Look out for the big watch sign hanging out over his door, the first one South of the Post-Office, and call in and see him. You will always find him at his post, ready and wailing to wait on customers tl-18-wtf NORTH GEORGIA AND DUCKTOWN RAILROAD. Agreeable to previous appointment a meet ing was held at Eainnount, in the interest of this enterprise, oft the 7th iust. The prompt ness and accuracy of the pupils in answering questions an solving problems, evidenced the thorough training which they had received, and the ability uud perseverance of the teach ers. The committee examined classes in Latin and Greek, and found that the pupils read flu ently, and were well drilled iu the rudiments of these languages. The committee, likewise, propounded to the elasses problems, which were not in their text-books ; these were readily and accurately solved. Mrs. Braira’s examination commends her to the confidence and patronage of thin commu nity. S. G. II ILLY Kll, Jr., ) v J. T Nourih, i L. B. Milligan, $ Conuail^ A CARD. BEECHER AS A “GROWING MAN.” Harper’s Bazar learns these facts from “The History of Plymouth Church •Beecher’s salary was at first, in ISG7, $1,500, to be increased on the third year to $2,000. In 1859 the salary was 87,000 ;in 1805, $12,500; in 1870, 820,000. The pew rent in 1858 $11,157; in 1859, $20,000; in 1808, $48,000; in 1872, $59,000. In 1868 a quartette was introduced, whose aggregate salaries, with that of the organist, are $7,000. The helper—a clergyman who does the pastoral work—and the sextons receive $7,700, making the whole amount of salaries $85,300. There are several deaconesses elected annually. The number of members increased from twenty-one in 1847 to 3,300 in 1872. The number of Sunday-school pupils was, in 1872, 1,319, besides some 800 connected with mission schools. If Beecher’s growth in grace and the Christian virtues had kept pace with this wonderful material pros perity, he would have long since reached the point of sanctification, but the truth seems to l>e that he lias steadily retrograded, lie rests quiet ly under imputations the most shocking and dishonoring that can be named, and allows the cause he represents to be smirched and scoffed at because he would fain have the world believe that his saintly repute is too spotless to be stained, This is not our idea either ofa true man or con scientious minister. Either he dare not meet his accusers face to face, or he is perfectly indifferent as lo the effect his silence must have upon the church, his own power for good, and his congregation. —Macon Telegraph. DYING WORDS. The dying words of the best men are often few, and sometimes very faint; but, if few and faint, not the less assuring and impressive. We are able to preserve one of Dr. Guth rie’s last sayings, uttered a few days ago, to, or in the hearing of Wesley an friends who visited him. He had been talking all the morning—re marking to a near relative that he feared that, if he did not talk, his mind would wander—that he must direct the engine, or it would run a way with him. He welcomed his visitors with more than even his usu al cordiality, and pour’d out beautiful words of love and blessing, especial ly to one of them, a widow, whose message to her husband in Paradise he promised to convey. “1 often think,” he said, “of what Dr. Bunt ing said when he was dying, ‘1 have an obstinate faith.’” Other express ions were such as these: “I cannot help talking. What a thing it is that my faculty of speech, my glory in my strength, should be to my hu miliation, now I am weak.” “I should like, please God, to live a year or two longer, to finish my au tobiography, and to impress on the churches their duty to support their ministers better; I mean pecuniari ly.” “I have not the joy I think I ought to feel in the prospect of so soon being with tny Heavenly Fath er and my beloved Saviour; but 1 am in peace.” These last words were spoken to a devoted minister of the church of England, who soothed his dying hours. His admirable wife; and eight of hie ten children, all worthy of him, and other affec tionate relatives, witnessed his end.— London Watchman. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS.
