F., held on Thursday night, 3d inst., the following officers were installed : S. 11. I'aUillo, N. G., D. llamitcr, V. G., S. Thomas, See., J. D. Wilkersou, Treas., A. IJ. Harrison, W., J. W. Bogle, C., R. S. Fattillo, It. S. N. (!., A. 1), Vandiverc, L. S. N. G., J. W. 11111, R. S. V. <i., J. W. Dyer, TANARUS,. 8. V. G., .1. 11. Harrison, I. G., J. B. Hays, O. G. \ MAMMOTH FLOW. During our recent visit to Cherokee, our friend, J. R. McKinney showed us his splen did crops of corn aiul cotton, and we discov ered the cause of his success when we found a freedmun plowing a pair of large mules hitch ed lo a sweep, which cleaned the ground from row to row willi a single furrow. In this way lie was “laying by” Ids corn at the rate <xf ten acres per day. We thought that looked like business. Rube will always come out ahead if there Is any elmnee. Our old and long tried friend and fellovv eiti/.en, W. C. CuKF.N, is running the family grocery store lately occupied by C. C. Maus liehl, and asks his friends to call and see him, and bestow, at least, n reasonable share of their patronage. He keeps on hand a 'splendid stock of plain and fancy family groceries, all fresh anil nice, and sells them as cheap as any grocery house in the city, lie is also follow ing his old trade of Repairing and Renovating Watches and Clocks, and making, repairing and cleaning Jewelry, Jfcc. Look out for the big watch sign hanging out over his door, the first one South of the l’ost-Olllee, and call in and see him. You will always lind him at his post, ready and willing to wait on customers. tl-18-wtf A WORD TO OUR CHEROKEE COUNTY SUBSCRIBERS. We hereby give notice that, if Providence permits, we will attend the Superior Court at Canton, on the first Monday in August next, and will be glad to meet at that time all ot our Cherokee subscribers who are in arrears for the Standard & Express, and will give them one more opportunity to settle up. W e have begged this indulgence of those who are more intersted in the financial interest of tlie paper than we are, aiul hope our friends will not drive us to tlie necessity ot leaving their little accounts In the bauds of officers to collect. “A word so the wise is sufficient.” SCANTY FARE. As there is a good deal of excitement in va rious quarters in regard to cholera, our citi. zens generally are abstaining from vegetable diet of every kind, and also fresh meats. — However, cera and tomatoes are considered innocent and wholesome articles in tilt way of vegetables, and mutton and chicken harm less as a meat diet. There is no cholera in our city, and our physicians assure us that there is no danger of it here if our people will be prudent. Let us all deny ourselves every enjoyment that might excite a cause of jhe awful malady, till all danger shall be over post. THE “GLORIOUS 4TH.” Last Friday being the anniversary of Amer ican iudepcnce, was celebrated by the colored people with great eclat. A special train came up from Atlanta in the morning, laden with the dusky sons and daughters of freedom, and the day was spent by them in marching around to the sound of a band of music, and dancing to the sound of tlie fiddle. That our colored friends should celebrate the day on which the forefathers of the whites declared themselves independent of Great Britain, is ridiculous in the extreme, and is perfect mockery. We “white trash” didn’t regard the clay with any special interest. In fact we are almost sorry sometimes that there was ever any change made in our form of government, since things have turned out as they have. One thing is evident, and that is, if we had remained subject to the British government, wc of the South would never have been troubled with the ne gro, and perhaps with Northern enemies and persecutors. Wc respect oar forefathers for their good intentions in their behalf, and in oar own, but sd the same time we seriously doubt if the Revolution of ’7G has brought us any real good. We are certain that the color ed people of the South have no cause to rejoice at the return of the annual jubilee of Ameri can freedom. However, a big hanging every year would do them just as well. Anything lo call a crowd together. Dr. J. P. Holmes, the skillful dental opera tor, is stopping at the Bartow House. For eight years has made a specialty of curing dis eased gums or Scurvy, Abscesses, and diseases of the mouth. Builds ont beautifully with gold, teeth that are decayed or broken oil'. Bleaches diseased teeth. Bo sure to call im mediately. Dr. Holmes comes endorsed by the profession and first men of tlie country. Will work in town or country. MENTION ! FRIENDS OF TEMPER ANCE. We are requested toannouee that Air. J. W 1). McClure, D. (L W. C. TANARUS., of this District, will attend at tlr- City Ila'l in this place on next Satnrday the 12th iust., for the purpose of organizing a Lodge of Good Tempters. Public Lectures will be delivered on the occa sion, by the lion. Jlion W. H. Underwood and others at four o’clock in the evening. A full attendance is desired. A RICE FIELD. Our friend, J. A. Kirkpatrick, of Cherokee, showed us some days ago a field of four acres w hich he, had planted in rice. The crop look ed well and promised an abundant yield. A3 rice is worth'three dollars per bushel in a rough State, and as 30 or 40 bushels can be raised on one acre, there is certainly no crops that would pay better, especially on low wet land, that is unsuitable for anything else- We hope there will be an abundance of this whole some ami valuable grain sown nest year. It is more profitable, more-certain, and legs troub le than corn, wheat or cotton, and well dererv es the attention of farmers. COL NCIL PROCEEDINGS. July Bth 1*873. Present, A. Johnson, Mayor. Aldermen ; Hudgins, Wofford, Edwards, Roberts, and Maddox. Read and approved the minutes of last meeting. Ordered, That the clerk he authorized to is sue license to retail spiritous liquors, and on billiard tables by tlie quarter, instead of semi annually. Ordered, That Treasurer pay the assessors #25 00 each for assessing the value of the road estate of the city. Treasurer made bis report which was refer red to the Auditing committee, examined and approved by the committee, and"ordered to be published. J. C. Maddox, Clerk Council. We are under many obligations to Mr. II- M. Clayton, Books, Music and Stationery dealer, of this city, for the .following pieces of music: * “Does lie ever tliiuk of me,” song & chorus. “Why dont you come home,” “ “ •‘Julia, ’Tis of tliee l sing,” “ “ “Autumn Leaves.” “Whisper Softly, Mother’s dying.” “ Inspirer and-hcarer of prayer,” hymn. “Come Holy Spirit,” “ “Pearl of America. “God bless our home,” song and chorus. This music is all from the excellent publish ing house of J. L. Peters, New York. A GRAND WRESTLE ! HILLY EDWARDS VICTORIOUS ! There was some excitement in the vicinity of our office on last Monday, occasioned by ft wrestling match between our friends, James W. Strange and Billy Edwards. Billy at once harnessed his competitor, and Strange as it may appeal, rolled him over on the floor. We congratulate Billy on his narrow escape, for if that 300 lbs. of human flesh and bones had fal len on him, he would doubtless have been slightly killed by being “over-laid.” We did not witness tlicl contest, but suppose that Bil ly must lnve thrown but one side of his adver sary at a time, as was impossible to span him. Billy now boasts of being the champion wrest ler of tlie city, and offers a challenge to any one who dares to dispute his claim. If our old friend Jolly did not have the rheumatism, we would insist that lie accept tlie challenge and try him a round ! CAIITERSVILLE FEMALE ACADEMY. Mrs. Brame, tlie well known and popular teacher, lias been employed by the trustees to take charge of the Female Academy at this place, in conjunction with Miss Sims, of Dal. ton, as her assistant. It is unnecessary lo say any thing of the qualifications of ’Mrs. Brame, Hie great success which lias uniformly attend ed her schools and the thorough estimation in which she is held by her patrons and the coni* munity, being tier best and decisive recom mendations. Miss Sims is a graduate of the Wesleyan Fe male College, at Macon, Ga., and so well qual ified was she, upon her graduation, that she was retained as tutoress in that institution by Dr. Bonnell, where she remained with univer sal acceptance for three years. Since that time she has, we believe, been engaged in the high school at Dalton. Preparations are now being made for resum ing the exercises of tlie Academy, which will take place some time in Angust. We congrat ulate the community upon the bright prospects attending the future of female education in this place, under Ihe management of these ladies, and cordially commend them to all who have daughters to educate, as having no superiors in upper Georgia. THE UNBELIEVER. “I AM A POOR UXRELIEVER.” Such were the words of one to whom were offered the consolations of religion iu an hour of distress. How wretched must his condition be, who is “without God aud without hope in the world !” Tlie Christian sorrows, but there is a sacreed sweetness in his woe; he is afflict ed, but he knows that afflictions shall work for him a “far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory he is bereft of friends, but Hope whispers to him in accents sweeter than the voice of nu angel, “thou shall meet thy friends in the Paradise of God.” Aud the Christian knows that lie must die, but he feels that to “depart and be with Christ is far better” than to remain on earth. But what eonsolatiion has the unbeliever in the hour of sorrow, in the day of tribulation ? He is made to weep, but but does not feel that God and angels pity him ; he is sick, but cannot say, “it is good for me that I am afflictedins loved ones are taken away from him, and lie mourns for them without the hope of a happy re union in a bet ter world. And he, too, knows that lie must go down to tlie grave, but is not cheered with the pleasing thought that he shall ever rise up to life and immortality. To him “the evil days come, and the years draw nigh,” and lie is constrained to say, “I have no pleasure in them.” lie fears death and dreads the grave, and imagines that the hour of his dissolution is far iu tlie future ; • “But the foo, Like a staunch murderer steady to his purpose, Pursues him closely thro’ every lane of Life, Nor misses once the track, but presses on, Till forced at last to the tremendous verge, At once he sinks to everlasting ruin.” Not so with the Christian ; he lies down in death, “like a tired child to sleep,” and feels that “to die is gain.” “The last end Os the good man is peace How calm his exit Night-dews fall not more gently to the ground, Nor weary, worn-out winds expire so soft.” Advertisements.
