Tumlin bare formed a copartnership in the Iron ore business, and we learn have already commeuc ed operations on thejproperty owned by them and situated on trie liill above the Baptist church. It is said that they have struck ore in vast quantities and of the best quality. Slic es -to our enterprising friends! We expect to be at Canton next week an attendance at Court, and wish to meet all o ur Cherokee friends, and especially those who are iu arrears lor the Standard & Express. Se ine are in debt fur the paper for more than a -year, and others are considerbly behind for. sub scriptions. The duty of all such is p'.ain, and we hope they will not wait for us to hunt them up and ask them to fork over the little amounts due us, but that each will go prepared for a settlement and w ill call on us for the nic. Stop the payer if you do’at like it, biq, be sure and pay for it first. \Y"e wish to re tain all our old subscribers and to obtain as many new ones as possible ; said shall contin. no t.) i .n"A ours. Ives to make, the Standard A Express one of the very best weekly papers in Cherokee Georgia. It already has that repu ta’.ion, and our ambition and aim is to make it better still. Who will aid us in the effort ? 1 HE RESOURCES OF CHE/ .OKEE GEOR GIA. We have often heard it re marked, by those who have traveled extensively, that all, things considered, there is no better country on the face of the earth than Cheroke% Georgia. The climate is mild and salubrious, much of the soil is fertile and adapted to the growth of perhaps a greater variety of productions than ny other country in the world. Cotton, the great staple is cultivated with complete suc cess on much of our lands, and corn, wheat, rye, oats, barley, rice, tobacco sorghum, pota toes and many other vcgatablcs yield abundant crops under favorable circumstances. Clover and other grasses, also are grown very profita bly in many instances; while such fruits as arc common to the temperate zone may be raised in great profusion. Cherokee Georgia abounds in extensive forests of timber of vari ous kinds and which are well adapted to .ma ny of the purposes of art; beautiful streams meander through our mountains and valleys, and are capable of running manufactories by the thousand, while valuable minerals exist in vast quantises in many parts of the country. . VALUABLE PROPERTY FOR SALE! We call attention to a notice in another col umn, of the sale of the “McClatchcy mill prop erty,” which is to take place on next Tuesday. Till* property is in miles of Cartersville, i* immediately on the Rail-road, Sn the midst of a section of country that is rich in agri cultural and mineral wealth, and contains a water power sufficient for any manufactoring purpose, ft would be difficult to estimate its rial value, STALL AND l DAMS. We invite special attention to the special advert keim-nt of our special friends Stall & Adams, in another column. We commend iheir excellent churns to our henpecked friends, who can certainly do the churning with them in half the time thotit takes’with the ok! fashioned sort; and then they-can build lives and Mart breakfast iu those new and im proved stoves 80 much easier than in the old ones ! Blall A Adams arc sagacious men, and, knowing the wants of the community, they are prepared to furnish those articles whic h an- most needed in every family. Be sure and cull at their shop on w >; main street and examine their goods and ware*. C ROPS IN CIIEROKEE COUNT Y. We were In Cherokee county last week and 'vc’v pleased to :-oc the crops in suoli fine con dition. Both the com and cotton crops are ex tra good in ■in ighlnfrbood of Field’s Bridge. We think the corn on the Etowah bottoms will average forty bushels per acre ; and if no disaster befall the cotton, it will certainly ji id tv.i. bales to every three acres; and we -:.\v a good deal which we thought would rnahe a bag pi r acre. The people of that county have gone to work in good earnest io make “plenty and to spare.” They use good tools and fertilizers, by which mems they have greatly improved their agricultural resources. V\ e were convinced the other day, by ocular demonstration, of the good effect of fertilizers in cotton, for the cotton where they were used was twice as good as that where it was not ap plied. “Seeing is believing.” We hope how ever, that fa: tners </< tierally will abandon the use of commercial manures entirely unless the prices are greatly reduced. A GOOD SPEECH. Wc ;* cin a late number of the CurroU ('aunty Times, an address delivered before the Alumni of Bowdon College, July the Bth, by G. (J. Tumlin Esqr., of Cartersville Ga. The young man’s subject was, “Our Coun try’s Hopes,” anil we think lie managed it well. The address does him great credit. Hik style is free from affectation and bombast; and the speeeli throughout abounds with sen sible and practical thoughts, beautifully ex pressed. Jtc speaks of the resources and ad vantages of the Southern States, and of the manner in which they are. to be developed and utilized and of the duty of the young men of the country in the accomplishment of the great work of improvement. 'Tie alludes in glowing terms to Georgia’s mineral and agri cultural resources, and demonstrates liow easi ly she may be made one of the first in materi al amt intellectual importance, in the great si: ler-hood of stales. We congratulate our talented young friend, and predict for him a brilliant and useful career. AMENDE HONORABLE. Among our local items last week, as some of our readers will recollect, appeared the fol lowing : A Mrs. Teasdale is teaching a dancing school in the city Hall. We dont think that such hot weather is the “time to dance.” We attached but little' importance to the hem at the time it was penned, and did not suppo: ■■ that, any one else would give it any particular significance. It appears however that we were mistaken, for on the morning after wo went to press, we were called on by Mrs. G. O. Teasdale, the accomplished lady mentioned in the notice, and to our great sur prise and profound regret, were informed by her that the item had given offense, as it was calculated to injure her business. We disclaim ed any such intention ; and did not then, nov can wejmnv, see how such a construction eou’id mu-onanly be put upon our language, for we m iv!y gave it as our opinion that the we/.ther was too hot to dance; we may have err» and in our judgement, and probably the weathf r was nut so warm as we t bought it was ; at l east, we are willing to admit that it may not Ur eve been too warm to dance. So much for the weather. Airs. Teasdale also took exception to our al luding to her as, “A Mrs. Toasdaln.’ 1 We sup pose that was a violation of the ruli.es of eti quette, and we beg pardon, mul excuse our self upon the ground that we did not, in the first place, know i lie lady’s initials, and in the second place that we are not very famil liar with the writings of Lord (Jhesterficld, and iu the third place that we never had an oppor tunity of attending a dancing school in our more youthful days. Before wc close this article we deem it our duty as au act ot politer, css, to return our thanks to Mrs. Teasdale for the kind invita tion she gave us to atte ad her soiree on last Thursday evening. Yv e hope our absence was excused, as a j>. < x.s of business, and jpre&siug engagements prevented our attendance. Our motto is, “business first, pleasure next.” Airs. Teasdale demancled satisfaction for the grievance of which she complained, aud of which we were tho innocent author: AYe have tried to give it; if we have failed we are willing to try agaiu, mil to keep trying until a full reconciliat ion ska 11 be effected, for we de' sire “so far as is possiibie to livepeaeably with all men and most earnestly do wc desire to enjoy the good opinion of all tiie ladies, and especially of that clever and accomplished chief, among which Mrs. Teasdale : s number ed . LOCAL TRIFLES. Provisions continue cheap. The health of our city continues good. Wc see plenty of water-melons on the streets this week. Tue parloi Beef Market men have been sell ing mutton lately. The young people ol our city attend church promptly, especially ai night. The colored people keep up a protracted meeting pretty much all the time we believe. The colored people have two or more flour ishing schools in the suburbs of the city. They believe iu “iaruin.” The hogs are triumphant in our streets. Oar citizens must still call for their ejection, and try to have them rooted out. The ivddition to Mrs. Fosters house ou main street is about completed. Blie has now a large convenient and commodious residence. The rat u fell in torrents hereon Sunday night and Monday evening last. We have rain enougji now to Jo until “fodder pulling time.” Col. St insell says he has had h small mess of sweet potatoes, but dont wan?- anything to be sa'.tl about it. AA'e suppose the Col. raised Jthem himself. Our hieiid. Strange is in the habit of eb s true ting the side-walk iu front of Ills shop, and iu answe rto our remonstanees, says that he lias as mv.eh right to monopolize the side walks its the bogs. lie is right as well as strange. Fleas are raging here in countless numbers; and we are led to exclaim : Ilovr doetli the little busy ilea, I jnprove each day and hour, By clawing with each foot aud knee, And kicking with great power! "He skips about with womlerons skill, His labors are not few ; O that I had the power to kill The last one of the hateful crew ! “THE WAY OF TRANSGRESSORS IS HARD.” How true is the above proposition! llow often do we sec it Terrified, and who wilt pre tend to say that it is a small filing to violate the bust command of God ! “The soul that siuneth it shall die.” There is no escaping the penalty except by timely repentance; and “be sure your sin will find yon out,” and sooner or later the retribution will come. The liar, the thief, the murderer, the drunk ard, the swearer, the adulterer, and all the viola tors of God’s righteous law, may escape for a while and seem to prosper in the way of sin, but eqcii “shall mourn at the last,” and dis cover, perhaps, when it is too late, that “the way ol transgressors is hard.” “There is a way that seeineih right unto a mau, ! :t the cud thereof are the ways of . dli.’ Conscience may be lulled to sleep in the cradle of false securty, by a syren and delusive voice that whispers peace; but the w rath of G id shall awaken it, and heat upon the naked soul in one eternal storm. But ere that storm shall come, refuge may Le found ; and the prudent man will forsee the evil, and seek 1 hat refuge, which is Christ, before the door of mercy shall be closed forever. Oh let ail u.* “Be wise in time to see Our damage and our remedy;” ' Elder E. S. V. The eighth summer of beauty and loveliness had passed over the brow of this sweet child, when the angels, on viewless wings, paused in their flight, and pityingly watched by tire bed side of this beautiful treasure. Ti e modest ..rtverti*rnent which invited attention to the preparation stated that it had been used with great success in private practice a* a cure for dyspepsia, bilious com jdaiiit* constipation and intermittent fever. It was soon discover ed that the article possessed extraordinary properties. The people, of every class, tested its merits as a tonic, stimulant, corrective and restorative, aim found that its efiects more than fulfilled their hopes and expectations. From that time to the present its course lets been upward and onward, and it stands to-day at the head ol all medicines of it* class, Ameri can or imported, in the magnitude of its sale* and its reputation as a safe, agreeable and po tent icrigorant and restorative. For languor and debility, lack of appetite and gastric dis turbances so common during the summer months it is absolutely infallible. Indigestion, bilious disorders, eonstination, nervousness, periodical fevers, and all the ordinary com plaints generated by a vitiated and humid at mosphere, vanish under its renovating and n novating and regulating ir.ilueuce.
