All know how the soil in flower beds becomes packed by the Irequent watering necessary in hot weather to keep plants in good growing condi tion, and that it is not always conve nient to stir the ground every day to keep it open. So some resort must be had to mulching, or covering the ground with something to keep the moisture from escaping. Dry leaves, manure, straw or hay are mostly used for this purpose; but these are often unsightly, and especially in front yards, the observed of all observers. This season I have used sods, skin ned thin off the surface, and turned upside down among the growing plants- Have plunged spots into the ri ound containing oleanders, carna tions, roses, and others, covering the spots with inverted sods, and they do not require near so much watering as if left bare, and there is not the appearance ot a straw heap around them. Strewing the ground A\ith grass, hao, or unrotted manure is liable to seed down the flower-bed w ith noxious weeds—the dislike of every tasteful gardener.—[Record & Repository. POTATOES 3 ROSCRIJjED. Several German writers upon ra ces predict that nations, far from im proving, will deteriorate, both in physical and mental characteristics if potatoes become a principal article of diet. The celebrated Bari Voight says that the nourishing potato does not restore the wasted tissues, but makes our poletariats physically and mentally weak. The Holland physi ologist, Mulder, gives the same judg ment when he says that the excessive use of- potatoes among the poorer classes, and coflee and tea by higher ranks, is tlie cause of the indolence of nations. Leinderfrost maintains that the revolutions of the last three centuries have been caused by the enanged nourishment" the lowest workman, in former times ate more flesh t han now, when the cheap pota to forms his principal subsistence, hut gives him no muscular no nerv ous strength. COST OF GROWING ROOT CROPS. At a late meeting of the Central New York Farmer’s Club, at Utica, Hon. Harris Lewis read an essay on the subject of “Root Culture, ’’ in which he saie : “The cost to me of roots will av erage about as follows : carrots, thir teen cents per bushel of 60 pounds; beets, including yellow globe, long, red, lanes, imperials, and three kinds ot sugar beets, seven cents per bush el of 60 pounds” He grows these roots very largely for feeding his dairy cows. APPLE FRITTERS. This is :i favorite dish with many, and often preferred to dumplings.— Make a hatter, not very stiff with one quart milk, three eggs, and flour to bring it to right consistence. Pare and core half a dozen large apples, and chop them to about the size of small peas, and mix them well in the batter. Fry them in lard, as you do doughnuts. For trimmings, powder ed sugar is the best, though good brown sugar will do. TO PROTECT LEATHER. Long continued observations show that harness and other leather expos ed to the action of ammonia continu ally given off m stables, becomes weak and rotten sooner than other leather. Even when care is taken to protect them with grease this takes place. One authority recommends the addition of an equal quantity of glycerine to their oil or fat employed in greasing such kind of leather, as serting that it always keeps it very pliable and soft. CUT-WORMS AND CORN. A correspondent of the Country Gentleman gives this treatment of corn as a sure way to keep it from the attacks of cut-worms : Soak the coni m water till it swells as large as the kernels will ordinarily expand, then add a pound and a half of copperas dissolved in warm water, and allow it to soak one day, stirring it several times. Afterward sprinkle enough land plaster over it to pre vent the grain from sticking together. LIVE LTOCK. All kinds need some attention — the horses mules, and oxen ; see that they are regularly fed and watered, and not overworked, sheep should be supplied with tar, over which salt is sprinkled, as a protection against the fly, which deposits the eggs from which the grubs or worms in the head are produced, and hogs to re ceive green food, or have the run of a clover field. Lemons sprinkled with loaf sugar almost completely allay feverish thirst. Invalids affected with fever ishness can safely consume two or three a day. Oye might as well skin a horse and expect it to work for him, as to skin a farm and expect it to grow crops. Labor-saving implements give the farmer power and time—power to cultivate the soil, time to cultivate the mind. It is estimated that fully 200,000 farmers in the Western States have organized for mutual protection du ring the past few months.
