(depress S. H. SMITH A < < >., Proprietors. OARTERSVILLE, GA.: THURSDAY, AUGUST 2*, 1*7:). ■ ■ & V'* N-- *S - > •%' Fan, Garden and Hmioi the ballad of farmer brown. Old firmer Brown came into the house, And wrathful’y slammed the door, And flopped himself dojrn in a chair, And flopped his hat on the floor. For farmer Brown was dreadfully wroth, And his dander it was up, And he looked around with an angry scowl, And wrath fully kicked the pup. ‘l’m tired from head to foot,’ he said, •And hungry as I can be; I'd like to have a mouthful to eat— Is dinner most ready V” said he. The farmer’s wife she was pale and thin, And hungry and wan was she, And her eye was dim and her step was slow, And dress was a sight to see. •Your dinner is ready,’ she meekly said And the dodgers is smoking hot, But I've scraped the meal all out ot the box, And the last jint’s jest from the pot.” ‘The mischief you have,’’ said farmer Brown,* Heaving a doleful sigh; ‘Thar's plenty of bacon ajul corn in town, And I've no money to buy.” Up spoke the fanner’s daughter, Mr rier— And she hadn’t spoke before : ‘‘Thar’s cotton out under the shed, said she, “gome dozen ba’es or more. •Cotton, the devil,’ said farmer Brown (It’s dreadfully wrong to swear) ‘My cotton’s all mortgaged for last year's w ork, With never a bale to spare.’ •Well, then, his daughter upspoke again, ‘lf that wont do for feed, You’ve two or three wagon loads or more Os Dickson’s prolific seed.’ ‘Do you think me a feast ?’ said farm er Brown, ‘l'm neither a cow nor steer; And what if I wa|? I've liardly enough Os seed to plant this year. Then said his daughter Marier again, ‘Thar’s guano, lats,’ she said, ‘ Thar's twenty sacks full in the barn, And barre s under the shed.’ ‘Guano ! oh Lud !’ said tarmef Brown, •1 need all the precious stuff To put on my cottou land/ this year, And then won’t have enough.’ - But when the farmer had eaten his fill, lie fell into thought profound, And smoked his tobacco which cost at least Some ninety cents per pound. And then he muttered, ‘Thar’s some thing wrong • "•'’ ’ * About my farming, I swear ! We don’t have even enough to eat. Nor half enough to wear ! ‘My mules are starving almost to death, My cows are dreadfully thin, Thar's hardly an ear of corn in the crib, And nary an oat in the bin 1 •The times aint like they once have been, When 1 was young and spry; Wo had fat horses and mules in the lot, And fat hogs in the sty. ‘My c. k >s were almost chock full cf corn, My smoke-house groaned with meat. We then had plenty of clothes to wear, And always enough to eat. ‘By iings ! I'll change my habits at once, From woeful experience learn — This year my cotton I’ll plant in a patch, And plant my fields in corn.’’ moral: All you whose farms ftre going to wreck, — Who've neither corn nor meat — Just make the resolve of farmer B. And go for something to eat! Sandy Higgins. ACTION OF COFFEE. * Auburt, writing upon the constit uents of coffee, says that'in roasting none of the caffeine is lost, but that it may be more completely removed from the grains if they are strongly toasted. When taken in large doses it seems to cause a decrease in the ac tion of the heart. When taken in small doses the pulse becomes more active, but the pressure of the blood in the vessels decreases. CLEANING WOOL. Many of our farmers pay but little attention when cleaning wool to the kind of water, used in the operation ; but it will be seen that this should always be taken into consideration. Thus, waters containing lime should be carefully avoided, since this con stituent combines with the suint, thus forming an insoluble soap, which seems to produce unpleasant efiects in the processes of dyeing. For log wood, red wood, and dyes of like character, the effect appears to be unimportant; but when quercitron, fustic and madder are used, the effect is quite different, and is often very deleterious.
