All who want good bargains in the way of Dry Goods, Clothing, Boots, Shoes, Hats, Family Groceries, &c„ would do well to read ;l:e advertisement of Q. J. Briant, in another column. George Is now doing business on Ids own hook, and is determined to give satisfac tion to all who will give him their patronage. He has secured the services ol the Rev. E. S. y. Briant, and Rev. John Anderson, as clerks, the one a Baptist and the other a Methodist. sjhe£ ’will ‘ watch ea..u other, and George nill-watch them both, aud it is to he hoped ihat all cheating will be prevented. Call at friend Briant’s store, on East Main Street, and be suited , shod, fed and clothed. SECOND METHODIST CHURCH IN CAR TERSVILLE. Measures have been inaugurated for bulld og a second Ghiueji 411 this place, *.o be located on the East side of the railroad. We understand that our friend, J. I. Chamber lain, Esq., generously offers a beautitul and el igible lot for the purpose, Mr. N. S. Eaves pro poses to take the contract aud put up the building at the bare cost of the material and work, aud several gentlemen of ample means have promised to assist liberally in the enter prise. A second Methodist Church seems to Lo a necessity, aud we hope It will be built at rtn cat-1 y day. ’ ' '' TAX ON DOGS. We see that the Grand Jury for the second eeek of the Superior Court for this county, j.ecoiumead a tax on dogs. Now' it would be cruel to tax the poor things, and we beg that so great an outrage be not committed. Gen tlemen, what were you thinking about ? We now have nearly as many sheep and hogs in the county as vc have dogs, aud if your rec ommendation is carried out, and the poor dogs arc taxed, what will the people do - flic property of a large number of citizens consists principally in dogs, aud if that class of animals is to be'taxed, we inquire in the name ot the .American eagle, what will become of oui lib erties? The fact is, we can’t keep dogs with a tax on then}, and when Yfc blow our horns, Hull, anil Tige, and Reqv, and Muse, and Lion, aud Watch, and Trip, and Tray, and Fido, and Guess, and Uuo, will be gone “where the woodbine twineth,” and the ver dict will he, “dog days ended by taxation.” The rapacious sheep wili then take the coun ry, and bite the children; hens’ nests will abound all over the land; the price of eggs and chickens will fall, and the mischief will be to pay generally. 0 Legislators, spare the dogs! " Touch not a single pup ! Tax all the sheep and all the hogs, But keep, 0 keep the canines up ! LOCAL TRIFLES. % Capt. “Cel.” Pritchest is building a big barn. The sweet potato crop is good, that is, so far as we have sampled it. For some time past the mornings have been quite cool—too cool to dance! The fanners round the city are gathering crab-grass hay. That is sensible. The third story of the new hotel is np and the building will soon be completed. Gower & Jones have a quantity of wagons and buggies on hand, ready to put together. Stall & Adams have a bran new peddling wagon. It is as nice as red shoes with blue strings. The late crop of turnips is fine. We pre sume there will be plenty of greens next Spring. One of the best farmers in Bartow county says there will not be more than half a crop ol' cotton made on his farm, and bis crop is the best that we have seen. In this burg, at the present time, some eggs and butter would cause a flutter. There can be no weddings while this egg and butter fam ine continues. Capt. Wm. Tuinlin has remoddled aud paint ed up tin; old Judge Milner house and premis es in a very tasty manner, and it is now one of the most beautiful and well arranged lots in the city. Mr. Robert Pattillo lias sold his house and lot, and also his interest in the Hardware store to Dr. Baker, and will go to a farm in the country soon. Bob is a good fellow, and we hate to give him up. Our clever friend, M. A. Wheeler, w ith Col. Montgomery, has also bought a farm in the country, whither he expects to go very soon, and devote himself to agricultural pursuits.— We don’t like to spare him cither. Col. John W Wofford’s new bouse is.finish ed, and it looks well. There is perhaps no prettier cottage in Bartow county. Good taste was displayed in its construction, which we attribute, mainly, to Mrs. Wofford. Our friend, Capt, J, C. Maddox, lias been re elected Clerk and Treasurer of the City Coun cil. Capt. James D. Wilkinson has also been retained as Marshal, and Mr. John A. Gladden has been appointed his assistant. The Etowah Dragoons paraded on the streets on last Saturday evening, and received their arms. It is a fine company, is well officered, is composed of good material, and makes a fine appearance, but it is too small. Why don’t you enlarge it, gentlemen, by taking in all the gallant young men of the city and sur rounding country V The Bartow County Agricultural Association seems to have played out, as we hear no talk of a Fair this Fall. What is the matter? We think it a shame for a people who boast of such reeources as we do, to fall so far behind our neighbors in energy and enterprise. We hope the ladies will take the matter in hand and redeem thg county. It will never do for the great county of Bartow to h ive no exhibi tion of her agricultural, mineral and other pro ductions. Belts, Cravats, Fiche’s Corsets, Gloves, Ho siery, Laces, Embroideries, of latest design and at lowest prices, at HOWARD & RAMSAUR’S. MONEY PANIC! i‘The probabilities are” that there yvill be a money panic, which will last uqtlj a great portion of the cotton crop is sold at low prices to pay for fertilizers aud supplies, and then the crisis will be over! The rings are deter mined to wring the very life out of farmers if they can, aud they have them by the wrist anil will make them “stand up to the rack, fodder or no fodder!” How long will farmers suffer themselves to be “like dumb-driven cattle,” at the mercy of hearties j butchers? How long will they be “hewers cf • oed and drawers of water” for their present Task-masters ? How long will they persist in a course which makes thejn mere dependents upon otheis? Will they never learn wisdom by experience? We hope they will! We hope they will hereafter ifiaLb tqeß- qiyq ftuUtSei-s, or do without; make their own supplies; practice economy in everything, and be independent. T. B. Shockley is now reeieviug his Fall and Winter Goods. By the first of the month lie will have in a good stock of goods. All persons in the market are invited to call, and all persons indebted are respectfully requested to call and pay their accounts. I can pot buy goods w ithout money, and can ftotf'sdll any more to tl>ose who will got pay. call and pay up. ___________ THAT JUG.OF WHISKEY AGAIN. Our friend J. 13. Barton, of Ball-Ground, has sent us a reply to “May’s” last article on the Liquor question, and if we did not think that Mr. Barton has already sufficiently vin dicated himself in the matter, we wonk| in sert pis cofidpiuiiication,'as we are in favor of doing justice to all parties ; but as he has set himself right before the public, and ns it is evident that there was simply a misunder standing between the parties, we can see no possible good that could result from a contin uation of a controversy of so little interest to the public, and which has been characterized by a spirit of some bitterness, aud might re sult iu a “newspaper duel,” or something inOie Bei'iuus, “Lei us pave peace.” . • . ■ : - . i l GOOD NEWS! NEW GOODS!! We learn that Samuel F. Milam will open, about the Ist of October, in Cartersville, next door to the Lovelace Shoe Store, an excellent line of Dry Goods, Notions, Clothing,' Boots, Shoes, &c-, all fresh and new. Mr. Mi lam wishes to see all of his old customers, and many new ones, at the opening of his splendid stock, in order that he may convince them that he will sell them goods as low, or lower, than they can buy any w T here else. Give him a trial, and if he does not give you an equivalent for your cash, he will not expect you to favor him with a continuation qt.yoi,r patronage. UNDEVELOPED VIGOR. The leeble and debilitated usually fancy they are in a more hopeless condition than they really are. The resources of nature are not easily exhausted. Even when strength and appetite fail, when the eyes are heavy and lnslreless, the complexion pallid, the nerves tremulous, the body attenuated; and the mind depressed, there is' generally a reserv'd of latent power behind such palpable evidences of weakness. Various modes of treatment are resorted to by physicians in the hope of developing and rendering avail able this store of sleeping vitality, but the surest, ami indeed tUo only thoroughly safe and reliable means of awakening the dor mant energies of the system is a course of llostetter’s Stomach Bitters. Electricity, shower baths, the flesh brush, sea bathing, &c., may be well enough in their way, as auxiliaries, but they do not reach the source of the evil. All physical debility proceeds either from a derangement of the functions of the assimilating, secretive and vital organs or from ft ‘ sflnggish cpn&iitutiou/ Ju either case, and also in cases where both causes exist, the Bitters will invariably produce an immediate and salutary change in the condi tioq Os the patient, and eventually effect a complete euro. None of tue dangerous alka loids, too often administered as tonics, can be otherwise than deleterious undet such cir cumstances, and to give mercury is postively criminal. The direct effect of the great vege table specific will be manifested in an im proved appetite, a more cheerful frame of mind, a gradual return of strength, an increase of flesh, and a healthier conplcctlon. Mean while, however, the constitution, if ineft and feeble, will have been roused and renovated by the subtile elemeuts of invigoration con tained iu the Bitters. SPARKS FROM THE ATLANTA NEW ERA “Does Gov. Smith know anything about farming ?” No, but Gov. BiUlock does. “PI.KABK KE3IGX*.” “Will Governor Smith please resign, and let some good old farmer be elected to fill his va cancy. We have twenty thousand farmers iu Georgia who would make better Governors than brother (our italics) Smith.” Os course he will. You call him brother, we suppose, because you are the ex-chief ol the Idahos and Africos. Your twenty thou sand who would make good Governors are mostly colored we presume. How wonld your old farmer friend Rtdloek snit your taste again ? “Dead.—The Democratic party.” No doubt you hope so; and you may be fool enough to think so, and that is why such asses as you are kick it so furiously. “THE AMERICAN FLAG.” •‘Long may it wave, O’er the land of the free, And the home of t he brave,” That noble sentiment is given without the quotations, and is original, of course. The idea is brilliant and well conceived. We sug gest, however, that if yon want the flag to wave over your sort, ihat yon change the phra seology a little by substituting the word knave for brave in the last line. The dignified ex-Governor of the Idahos calls the Democratic party “bob-tailed.” If the tail of the ladicul party in Georgia were cut off there would be none of ilie concern left. It is all tail!
