He was the incumbent <d the uUi e of Sheriff when he died, and bad discharged the difficult dunes ot it from tho time of bis election, in tho moat faithful aud acceptable tuanuer. He was cut off in the prime of a vigorous manhood, and •’•as gone dowu to the grave, leaving belli) and him, )t is oonfidently believed, not n:i enemy upon tho face of earth. For who . ould bo at enmity with ■a mau so friendly, kind-hearted and honest. And with none fboit week ul tiio time when his father's remains w*ro consigned to the earth, died Henry Crowell Whittaker, his oldest child, on the 22d day of February. 1860 He was burn •*u ho 16th day of February 1841, and was 16 years old on tho day his father was buriod. Ho iiMended the funeral in perfect la alth ; hut, on Sunday following, was attacked with the same I mysterious malady and died in three days. Ho was a very sprightly cheerful minded young i I man. The able and experienced physicians who were in attendance on them, were unable to give tho iisoase a name, and frankly confessed that it was something beyond (heir skill and entirely new to them. They were attacked at first with j soreness and swelling of the throat. This stibsi j ded and readily yielded to the remedies, but it • immediately pasted to the ehe.it and lungs, and I brought about death in fearfully rapid and vi- i • deat manner.
