Now, many farmers treat their lands
In precisely this fashion. They feed
thoir lands very lightly or not at all,
and they roly upon water nlono to
mike a crop. In the meantime, they
b ood as freely ns possiblo at overy liar-
v. st, and then-apply, leeches to tho

this is quackery, to prodneo a disease
by injudicious treatment, and then ag
gravate it by continuing tho samo. 1
would recommend to tills class of farm

rules of tho Thompsonian practice, by
which they cure a groat many patients,
despite of their lobelia and steam; 1
moan good feeding and good nursing,
so that nature may do tho rest. It is
worthy of uoto that lands, well manur

produce a good crop, whilo thoso loft

How to Catch Hots.
Pot catching rats in a cheap an effec

ing : Cover a common bnrrcl witli stiff,
stout paper, lying tho odgo around tho
bar cl; place a board so tlint the rats
may have easy access to tho top, sprin-
klo choose parings or othor “ feed ”
for tho rats on tho paper for several
days, until {[ley begin to believe that
they have a right to their dally rations
from this source. Then placo in the
bottom of the barrel a picco of roo' ,
about six or sovon inches high, filling
with water until only enough of it pro
jects above the water for ono rat to
lodge upon. Now replace the paper,
first cutting a cross in the middle, anil
tho first rat that comes on the barrel
top goos through into tho wutor and
climbs on tho rock. The paper comes
back to placo and tho second rat fol
lows tho first. Then begins a fight for
the possession of tho dry place on tho
stone, tho noise of which attracts tho
rest; who share the samo fate Scien

Put them into weak brino ovor night.
In the morning drain them, boil them

of fruit (?) half a pound of sugar, and
ono pint of vinegar to each fourpounds
of fruit. Boil the vinegar and sugnv
a few moments, then add mace, cinna
mon and cloves to your taste, let it
boil, and skim well. This pickle is ns
good for cantaloupes, poaches or other
fruit, ns lor the above.
Naii. in the Foot To reliovo from

My (otters to you on tho subject of tho

“Truth Is stranger tlinn fiction,” and If
n man only believes wlmt ho sees, how
little of history would bo recorded.
But I nm even able to bffur to n
doubling puhllo that proof, namely;
tho monster himself in propria perso
nal, for ivo havo him, the very sniiko
Hint has created such an uproar.—
However, I will proceed with my nar
rative, aiid givo you a plain, unvar
nished statement of facts:
I wrote you on tho 8th Instant that
tho* serpent lmd 'Tiroken the box and
elcarod for tho woodB. This created
a grunt deal of consternation In the
community, and all lay low until to
ward evening, when tho neighbors got
together and devised some means to
put an end to him. On a closo exam
ination of tho box it was discovered
that they had put a defective plank in
it, It being windshaken from one end
to tho other, and thus, when the cap
tive bognu to surge, he soon started
tills plank, and was then able to break
out. Tho hole in tho ground was now
seenroly stopped, and every ono pres
ent determined to muko it their busi
ness to built him up and destroy him.
Thoy felt it necessary for thoir safety.
Strong bands, well armed, went togeth.
cr and scoured the woods, beat tho
thickets and soarchod closely every
whore, until thoy bognn to' despair of
success. But when they least looked
for it, fortuno smiled upon thoir ef
forts.
Somo mllo and a half or two milos
from tho den live a Mr. Isano Nelly
nnd a Mr. Irvine, closo neighbors.—
Yesterday morning Mr. Nolly walked
ovor to Mr. Irvino’s, carrying with him
his gun, an Enfield rlflo. Finding Mr.
Irvine in his field, nearly nt tho top of
the hill, nt work, ho called to him, nnd
Mr. Irvine and be seated themselves
on the fence, with their guns (for no
man now went without ono) near them.
Mr. Irvino’s was a common squirrel
rifle. Thoy had talked some timo hero,
when they become aware of a peculiar
ly musky odor pervading the nir. Thoy
lmd felt it at first, but it did not excite
thoir attention until it beoame sicken
ing in its power. Mr. Neilly. looked
around unconsciously to see what eoud
produce it, and there within sixty yards
of them, and just above, lay the serpent,
tho object of their dread. Their first
impulse was to run, but after they had
fnvoluntarily jumped from tho fence
they thought bettor of it, and, like true
men, ns they are, they determined to
flro on it. They laid their guns oaro-
fully on tlie fence, tho pnako never
moving, and takingdellboratenim, fired
at his head. At tho creak of tho guns
an awful crashing and slashing was
heard, and believing the awful oreaturo
was upon them, thoy throw awny thoir
guns and fled for dear life, nor did thoy
stop uutll they reached the houso.
The country was quiokly alarmed,
aiid after a good deal of rcconnoltcring,
tho spot was approached, to find the
serpont gone, but leaving behind him
such a great trail of blood thoy knew
ho wns badly wounded. Without dif
ficulty thoy followed this trail, and did
not proceed more than two hundred
yards down beside the fence before
they espied him, porfeotly limp and
dead. But it took sevearl shots from
a distance to convince them of this be
fore they dared approach.
Tho struggle whero tho monster was
shot must hnvo been terrific, for large
bushes woro beat to thu earth, and the
ground wns torn up where ho lmd-lash
ed it with his tail. Great credit is
duo to tho intrepidity of tho gentle
men who shot him, for few would have
dared it.
Mr. Irviuo quickly brought a pair of
mules to drag him off, but when the
mules caught sight of the huge animal
thoy beeamo so frightened nothin]
could hold them, and they broke am
tore away like mad. By this time a
groat many people had collected, and
thoy tied a chain around his neck with
a running noose, and dragged him
through the field to the big road. They
now found a couple of strong horses
gentle enough, nnd they with these
determined to carry him to Nolons-
ville, it being tho nearest point on the
pike. Hearing of these circumstances
I, in company with Mr. Bon. Johnson
of this place, started for the scene of
notion. When near Mr. Bittook’s wo
mot with Esquire Groeno going to the
same point.: Wo had not gone far : be
fore wo hove in sight, and here we met
with a very serious accident, for np
sooner had our horses caught sight of
tho luigo body of tho serpont than they
bognn to plunge at such n rate ns to
throw all Ihreo of us, Mr. Johnson and
myself sustaining no injury, but Es
quire Greene rocoivcd a sovero dislo
cation of tho ankle, (hat will probably
lomo him for life.
discovered he was spotted like a rattle
snnke, in diamond spots, and bis belly
wns of a bright bluish black color.
Wo cut him across the mlddlo and
skinned him both ways, thus preserv
ing the head whole. It was then well
saltail nnd limed, nnd the ends were
well sewed together, mid then by in
serting Mr. Simpson’s hollows, we in
flated the monster to its full size.
Wo will lot it dry in this fix and
then stuff it witli saw dust. Aud now
comes the best of all.
There are so many shares in it that
Its captors liavo agreed to make a pres
ent of it to Aiidrow Johnson. Tills
determination was arrlvud nt In the
Taco of a Very llbornl offer sent for it
by Msssrs. Wall & Handy, of Frank
lin. Now, In order to pay expenses
there, us soon ns it is in traveling con
