Melancholy and Fatal Accident.
Our whold community was shocked by a most
terrible accident which occnred about six miles
from tho city. Mrs. Jnno D, Walt, consort of
Andrew Watt, was killed dead, by being thrown
from a buggy, last Salilmth evening, near tho
-house of Mrs. Mnsscngalo. Mrs. Watt, In com
pany with her slstcr-fn law, Mrs. Stephenson, at
tended church, nnd after service, went to call on
Mrs. Mosscngaic, nnd arriving at the gate, the
horee became frightened—one she lmd driven for
tlm past tbn ye'atu, and' Is now sixteen—when a
gentleman caught the horse nnd held him till tlm
bridle broke, when he darted furiously nway, run
nlng somo forty yards, tlic buggy striking n largo
stump, throwing tlm two ladles forward out of
buggy, distances ten nnd fifteen feet. Mrs. W,
fell upon a rock, ber head striking, nnd was lmdly
cut, nnd her neck dislocated, causing Ipstaut death.
Mrs. S. was severely, though not seriously, hurt.
The young man was also thrown some distance by
tho sudden breaking of tho bridle, but not iiflured,
Mrs. Watt was in the fifty eighthycar of her age,
was nr. exemplary Christian, having been for forty
years a consistent member of tho Associated Re
formed Presbyterian Church, nnd was universally
beloved by those .Who knew her many virtues.
She leaves a devoted husband, two children, nnd
numerous relatives and friends to mount their ir
reparable lo.-s. Her funeral, on Monday, x

ifested much grief.

Worth Knowing.
Many persons lr» our city, afflicted with the
prickly heat, may find relief in the following from
the Louisville Courier:
Prickly heat is prevailing to n great extent in
our city. Many will ho glad to k-nrn that this
infernal disease, for it can scarcely lie called by
any milder term, can readily be cured by rubbing
the parts affected with the rind of a watermelon.
Radical Rule.—The Now York
World sops: in March, 186G, gold was
selling ,in this city at 124. Aftor more
than two years of peace it is now sell
ing at 147, or about twenty-three per
cent, higher. Thus Radical rule has,
in t\yO years, reduced tho value of the
greenbacks, tho currency Which tho
soldier is paid his pension in nnd the
laboring man receives his pay. from
eighty cents on tho dallar until it is
now only worth sixty-eight cents on
the dollar. .
The Week of Prayer.
The following notice nppoars in the Southern
Christian Advocate:
The observance of a n cek of prayer Inst year,
throughout the church, resulted in greht. and we
trust, Inating good to the cause of God. The
appointment for the present yo r is August 28—
8<», that is the week from the fourth to the filth
Sabbath in August, inclusive. The intervening
Friday is to be observed as n dny of fasting nnd
humiliation.
It is honed that there will bo a general assem
bling of the members of tlio Methodist Church
during that week. To this end, let tlio appoint
ment ho kept in view, und preparation made for
ts observance.
The 8ninc old wcathcr-cocks wero on the stump,
with an addition of two others, but recently in the
field. One, Jim Johnson, a gentleman of color,
a boot maker, tihd un honest negro, was called
upon to mnko a speech, and it is raid, made the
most sensible ono of tlio bunch. Tho character
of liia remarks, we did not learn, but be us they
were, we sympathize witli him in his condescen
sion. Wohder if Nut gave him tho right blind of
fellow-ship. Brethren, let us mix.,
Tlio best on the role of fame was a pale-faced
fellow, who rejoicetli in teaching tho Holy word
to rinners on earth. But the raise rabid skunk—
if wo do not violuto the skunk, by so culling him
—has mistaken his mark when ho proposes to
thus net, and follow his-vocation of exhorting.
This fellow, during tho war, was a violent icces-
sionist, and we learn, headed a list to make up a
company. (Don’t know whether it was tho same
one Nut joined or not.) Ho made a speech nnd
declared himself willing to kill his own brother,
in battle, on account of his consistent unionism,
nfter tho surrender, this “Rev,” Scaliawag pro
posed in church'to turn his Brother Compton out
of tho Baptist Church, for mixing radicalism and
religion. Now, where do we find him? Harangu
ing a,set of negroes nnd radicals, adyising them
that tlio succors of the Whito party is equal to
their re-qnslqvcmcnt. Oh,,thou poor hypocrite!

Negroes Organizing.
A gentleman in tills city, says tlio Atlanta In

and U informed that the negroes are organizing;
that they say they look for war, and are preparing
for It. Some of their Radical friends are advising
these poor devils to this course, and when they
•mt them intotioublo will desert them.
Tho nbovo call Is no joke. A Republican who
has a right to bo heard speaks, and it wero well
that his appeal be responded to.
Tlio call is by no procurement of Democrats,
but is tho spontaneous outburst of honest indig
nation nnd concentrated disgust.—Const it ution.
Death’s Doings.
Mr. John T. Lokoy, an old nnd esteemed citizen
of Muscogeo county, says tlio Columbus Sun, died
at his residence, seven miles from the city, oil the
lllh instant, nnd his wife, Mrs. Ann Lokcv, taken
sick on tlio same dny, Friday last, died on thu
12th. Their joint luneral Is nnnounc d to take
place at Mount Zion Church this morning. This
venerable couple had walked together the paths
of lifd for nbout forty years, had been residents
of tho county for some twenty-five years, were
well known and respected in their neighborhood,
and now have descended to the common roal ot
humanity in twenty-four hours of each other,
fitting termination of life’s fitful fever for those
who have loved and lived together, “They were
lovely nnd pleasant in their lives and in death
were not divided.”
Adkins on the liar Path.
The Atlanta Constitution says Adkins, the n
gro worshipper, who disgraces tho Senate with
hia filthy presence, made n “speech” last night in
the Representative l!n!l to a crowd of negroes,
in tho course of wlfich ho urged thorn to arm and
prepare for the conflict.
Can’t Conley get somebody else to do the praying
