population of tit# South a eltaneo to
recover their lost prosperity and hap-
pincBS. This action of tho Logislaturo
of Georgia haB been seized npon as a
pretext lo.roraand that State back into
a condition of miUjary despotism.—
Reconstruction is to be reconstructed
according to tho new programme, hut
before this Is accomplished Gen.Grant’s
opposition will have to he mot and
overcome. Thero is good authority for
stating that the President elect is not
only opposed to tho whole proposition,
hut that be fully anticipated precisely
what ocoitrrod in tho Georgia Legisla
ture, and that that occurrence had the
sanction of the military. This may
scarcely eoom credible to tho sbrickers
for negro supremacy , in the South ;
nevertheless tho fact is vouched for by
gonllotneu high in authority, and who
are in positions to know. They say
that General Grant not only anticipa
ted all that haa occurred iu tho South,
but that he never would favor or sanc
tion any further Congressional med
dling with tho reconstructed Statos—
This presents a plain broad issue with
the Radicals upon the very threshold
of the new administration, nnd ono,
too, of the greatest magnitude. The
unexpected position assnraod by Gen
eral Grant on this question of “recon
structing reconstruction ” furnishos
the topic of conversation iu high 0111-
clnl circles to-night, and the Georgia
dolegatos in Congress are encouraged
to hope that their State will yot ho
saved from the threatened calamity of
being again placed under military rule.

Anecdotes of A. II. Stephens.
On a certain occasion, Alexanitet
II. Stephens, of Georgia, was engaged
In a political discussion with Hcnja-
mln V. llill, of that State, when the
latter charged him with saying that
ho (Stephens) could eat Judge Come
for breakfast, himself (Ml 1 , llill j for
diunor, and Gov. Cobb for supper; to
which Mr. Stephens quietly replied t
“I novor said It; but if I had, llio ar
rangement of tho meals would have
been somewhat different. I should
not have takon Mr. 11111 for dinner,
whero he has placed himself, that be
ing the heartiest meal of the day. In
fact, I should prefer him for supper,
In accordance with that wise rule of
medicine, which prescribes light diet
to sleep upon.”
Au overgrown political opponent
once undertook to sneer at the illmimi-
llvosizo of StcplmuB,anil said,“I could
>ut a llttlo Baled oil on you, nnd swal-

Luck and Labor.
Many people complain of their had
luck when they ought to blame llioir
own want of wisdom and exertion.—
Mr. Cobdon a distinguished writer in
England, thus wrote about luck nnd
labor:
Luck is'every thing waiting for some
tiling to turn up.
Labor, with keen oyes and slron;
will, will turn np something.
Luck lies in bod, and wishes tho
postman would bring him nows of a
ogacy.
Labor turns out at six o’clock, nnd
with busy pen or ringing hammer, lays
the foundation of a competence.
Luck whines.
Labor whistles.
Litck relies on chances.
Labor, on character.
Luck slips down to indigenco,
Labor strides upward to iudspen
dense.
Coons and Caiu'et IIaiuiers—Tho
Baton Rouge Advocate has the follow
ing’:
“is that coon lively ?’’
“Oh, yes, sir," replied tho black pos
sessor of as wild a specimen as over
made tracks in the Comite swamp.
“Well, I want a real lively fellow;
put him on that root," pointing to the
lower knob of a very tall oak, “nnd
let,s see if he will stir himself.”
No sooner Said tlmn dono, and the
coon went up tho tree like a greased
streak of lightning.
“Von satisfied, boss, he’s lively ?"
Well, yes, hut I don’t want a coon
in a tree top.'.
The freodman looked up tho tree,
whlstlod, and scratched his head for
au idea, and Baid:
“Well, boss, dat coon is liko a cav-
pot-baggor, werry promising when he's
down, but when lie's up ho's no use to
nobody."
Train says in his autobiography:
I did not kuow, whon a youth, ,lhat
it was wrong to sleep witli your win
dows closed. To walk just after din
ncr. To drink such onormous quanti
ties of ice wator when dining. I was
not awaro that oating so rapidly was
oftentimes fatal to the moat robust of
men—that six meals a day, ending
with a late supper, was cutting off so
many years of your life. How ignor
ant muu is about man. I was not then
aware that llio doctors wero all wrong
about hygiene as tho ministers about
roligtou. I could not see that woman
was only the uliivo of the milliner, the
church, aud tho 9eragllo; that the most
people lived beyond their income.”
A very “strange wedding" at Colum
bia, Tennessee, Is thus reported by
the Nusbvilla correspondent of tho
Louisville Courier-Journal: Ten years
ago a young lady belonging to ono of
the most influential families in Murray
comity, against hor wishes discarded
the man she loved at the Instance of
her friends. At tho end of two years
she obtainod a divorce, and immedi
ately married hor first love. Nino
months ago her second husband was
killed, and to-night she will b# again
united to tho man she married ten
years ago.

By the local application of a suffi

be produced in any part, so that a man
with a most exquisitely painful wound

upon tho knife as it outers his own
body and porforms tho most difficult
operation without giving him the least
pain. A French Burgeon has invented
an instrument lie calls the “ ecrassur,'

oss of blood from tho smaller vessels,
if perfoimed with a knife. It is form
ed of a lino chain, gathered into

chain is tightened till tho parts are
separated. Tho blunt chain so turns

l’erhaps one of the best results of
modorii scieucs ha9 been through what
is called “ conservative” surgery, the
rule of which is to 6avo all that possi
bly can he saved from the amputation
knifo. Many of our bravo soldiers
complained of tho reckless haste with
which in the Into war some surgoons
would cut off arms and legs on account
of trifling wounds. The complalul

distinguished surgoons in ike’ world
has lately written: “At King's College
it is raro to seo an amputation; iu
nine cases out of ton excisions (or the
cutting out of tho diseased portion of
the limb) should ho performed in ils
stead.”
A boy at tho West was caught un
der a fnllon log, and his leg broken
and twisted upon itself at right angles
with his thigh, the bones protruding
tho flesh, and no dootor near. Reliv

taken to a hospital. Motlorn ootiser-

tho limb as the old-fashlonud surgery
would have done, sawed off the pro

again to its place, and put on an in
strument to keep it of equal length
with tho other, and now the hoy stands,
