An Old Man’s Story.
Many yeats airo a temperance meal
ing was held In a curtain village. A
liltlo boy who lived In Iho village was
anxious to (to, and persuaded his rath
er to taka him. The hoy novor forgot
that meeting, and ho wroto the account
of It years aftorwards. One of tho
speakers at Ilia meeting was an old
man. Ills hair was white and his brow
was wrinkled wltk ago nnd sorrow.—
When ho.arose to speak lie said :
“My friends, I am ahold man, stand
ing alone at the and of llfo’s Journey.
Tears aro In my eyes ami deep sorrow
In my honrt. I am without friends, or
home, or kindred on earth. It was
not nlways so. Onco.I had a'mother.
With her old heart crushed with sor
row she went down to her grave. I
once had a wife—a fair nngcl-hcnrtcd
creature ns ever smiled iu nn earthly
home. Her blue eyes grew dim, ns tho
flood of sorrow washed away its bright
ness, nnd her tender heart 1 rung till
every fibre was broken. I once Imd a
noble boy, but lie was driven from the
ruins of ids borne, nnd my old heart
yearns to kuow if lie yot lives. I once
bail n Imbo, a sweet, iovoly babe ; but
these hands destroyed it, ngd now it
lives with Him who loveth the little
ones. Do not spurn me, my friends,”
continued the old mnn, “there is light
in my wailing sky. Tho spirit of my
mother rejoices over (lie return of her
prodigal son. The lujtirod wifo smiles
upon him who turns back to virtue and
honor. Tlio child-angel visits me At
nightfall, nnd I seem to feel his tiny
hand upon my feverish cheek. My
liravo boy, If lie yet lives, would for-
glvo tlio sorrowing old iiian for treat
ment that drove him out intolho world,
nnd the blow that Inipod. him for life.
God forgive mo for tho ruin that 1
have brought upon all that was about
me.
“ I was a drunkard. From wealth
ami respectability,’I plunged into pov
erty and shame. J dragged my fami
ly down willi me. For years I 'saw the
cheek of my wife grow pale anil her
step grow weary. I left her alone to
struggle for the children, while I wns
drinking, rioting at the tavern. She
never ccmplnincd, though she nnd the
children went often hungry to lied.
“Olio New Year's night I returned
lato to the hut where charity had giv
en ns shelter. My wife was still up
and shivering over the coals. I de
manded food. She told mo there wns
none, ami then hurst into tears. I
fiercely ordered her to get somo. Sho

life In striving to warn others not to
enter a path which hat boon so dark
and fonrful to me.”
When tlio old man had finished the
temperance pledge was produced, and
lie asked the people to coma forward
and sign it. Tho father of tlio hoy re
ferred to leaped from his seat, and
preosed forward to sign tlio plcdgo.—
As he took tlib pen in hand he hestta‘
ted a moment.
“Sign It, young man, Blgn It,” Bald the
vonorablo speaker j “ Angels would
sign it, I woiild write my name In
blood, ten thousand times If it would
undo tho vnin I have wrought, nnd
bring back my loved nnd lost onas.”
The young man wrote, “ Mortimer
Hudson.” Tho old man looked. Ho
wiped Ills eyes and looked again. His
faco Unshed with fiery red, nnd then a
death paleness cattle over it.
“ It is—no, it cannot be; yot how
strange," lio muttered. “ Pardon me,
sir, but Hint wns the nanio of my boy.
Tho young mau trembled and hol’d
up his left arm, from which the hand
had been severed.
They looked for a moment in each
othor's eyes, nnd the old man exclaim
ed :
“My own injured boy 1”
Tlio young man pried out:
“My poor, dear father I”
Then they fell upon each other's
neck and wept tenra of penitence and
forgiveness together.
Don’t Stay Long.
“Don’t stay long, husband,” said a
young wifo tenderly, In my prcsenco
one evening, ns her husband was pre

Tho wofds'thomselvoB were insignif

ness with which they were accompa

vast depths of a woman’s love—of her
grief when tlio.light of Ids smile, tlio
source of all her joy, beamed hot
brightly tip'on lier.
“Don’t stny lolrg, husband 1” and I
fancied I saw tho loving, gentle wife,
silting alone, anxiously counting the
moments of her husband’s absence, ev
ery few moment’s running to tlio door
to see if ho were In sight, nnd finding
that ho was not, I thought I could hear
her exclaiming m disappointed tones)
“Not yet, not yot.” . .

Oh, you that have wives to say,
“Don’t stay long,” when you go forth,
