John, being thus commissioned, Imme
diately proceeded to tho. city ipid to tho
residence of Ids father’s old friend, whom
lie found to bo a very nice old gentleman,
with a beautiftd daughter, and gold speo-

John was usliocrd into tile parlor (a new

Hut wc must use Ids o\vn language: “I

fine pianos, fine everything, nml especially
a fine young lady who was dressed inline

After chatting with the old gentleman
a few minutes, lie took down Ids hat, told
me to make myself at home for an hour or
two, and left—-left mo alone with his daugh
ter, and a mimll' mischievous boy, tho
young lady’s brother. I didn’t relish tho

pected under such circumstances.
Miss Eiiiily, thinking, no doubt that to
he a good hostess, she must keep her guest
engaged in conversation, askod me “how

“it must bo a beautiful sight to see the la
borers, both male and feniale, romping on

that she always did think.that she would
like to spend a Christmas in the country n
nut-gathering with the village lads and
lasses; that it always laid been a mystery
to her how they got the eggs oil* the trees.,
without breaking them, etc.” -
In return, I thought that to keep up my
part of the conversation, it was necessary
for me to quote poetry mid the like, which
I did. Among other quotations, I unfor
tunately repeated the well known lines of
Shakespeare,
‘Tlic-rniflftillvlhlty that sbnpi-souri-inls,

ly regarded by the French brooders. For
the first wcok after being hatched .(and in

milk, stale bread soaked in water, and green
food finely chopped. Very few instances
can bo found whclo poultry are fed on tho

grain would be too expensive, produce few
er eggs, too much fat, and cause more dis
ease when fowls arc fed ad libitum so as tp
completely fill their crops, . which rpndcrs
digestion difficult. Tlio food is mostly
composed of about one-lmlf buckwheat,
barley or odtmeni; made into a sllfVpaste
with which the fowls are fed twlco a'day
nt sunrlso and sunset. This diet,is given
indiscriminately to old and young/ In somo
cases, wl\cre the fowls have not the run of
meadows, they nro'provided with a certain
aiRQUut of animal and green food. The
waste of the butcher shops is boiled, the
fat skinied olf, and, when coagulated, thor
oughly mixed with the mcalfbod. Cab
bages aiid other vegetables are supplied in
some cases, heiug either fed raw oi» boiled
and mixed with the meal food. Cabbage
is considered preferable to all other grain
ns a stimulant to egg.lnying, rtndin winter
a certain amount is given whole.
