A good story Is told of a German by tha

was asked to estimate the cost of n brick

Tho agent then notified Schmidt tlint lie

The ngent reasoned with Schmidt, hut
all to no purpose. When the stable was
about finished, Schmidt went to consult a
lawyer, thinking ho might stilt get thu
amount of the policy, besides having the
new stable.
The lnwyer, however, Informed him
that tliu company Imd a right to mnku

of bringing suit against them.
“Hut,” said Schmidt, “I insure for
nine hundred tellur, nnd this feller put up
detn shtahles for seven hundred and filly
—I do not understand this Insurance bus
iness.”
Finding tlint ho could not compel thu
payment by law, Schmidt determined to
get out of the business altogether. Cnll-
g upon the ngent, Schmidt said :'
“ Mr. Agent, I want you to shtop dem

Necessity Is the parent of progress, ami
Industry the luiudmaidof virtue, hence a
people can not (or will not, which amounts
to the same thing,) become Intelligent,
virtuous, and consequently happy, unless
surrounded by circumstances which neces
sitate industry, temperance, frugality, and
all the stern and noble virtues we are wont
to admire and emulate. To he compelled
to labor is a blessing, while to bo relieved
from the necessity ol it often proves n fatal

A lending member of the Semi to Foreign
relations Committee, in a recent con vena
tion on tho subject of tho Alabama claims
nnd tho probabilities of a war with Eng
land, scouted the latter proposition us ut
terly absurd nnd preposterous. Among
reasons advanced by lilm against u war
with England were:
First, It would necessarily he a naval
war, for tlie invasion nnd conquest of Can
ada would ho only the work of a week.—
Being a naval war, the destruction of the
commerce and shipping of both countries
would be almost the only result. England
has three times the number of Btcnm ves
sels Hint we have, all Iter passenger and
mail steamships being uvallublc nt twenty-
four hours’ notieo ns a war flotilla.
Second, n war with England would cost
tho United States at least 2,000,000,01)0,
which would eventually end hi repudia
tion. Mcnnwhilo the incidental loss and
suffering to both countries would be Incal
culable.
Third, the United States cannot afford
to hold the British North American pos
sessions as conquered. Four millions of
discontented people lit thu North, and ns
many millions more in tlio South would
produce a state of nfliiira anything hut
pleasant.
These iu brief are a few of the reasons
which render war with England improba
