THE EA GEE.
Friday Morning, December 29, 1876.
We regret to learn that a large por
tion of Dahlonega was destroyed by
fire on Monday night. We have not
been able to obtain particulars.
It is rumored that Chamberlain, of
South Carolina, has submitted to the
Democrats a proposition for a com
promise on the basis of a division of
offices
; .Since last Saturday we have been
completely ice-locked in this vicinity,
j Sleet and snow have bean falling at
j intervals for the last five days, and at
the time we write, (Thursday after
j noon,) there are no indications of a
| let up or of a thaw. We have now
had one month of honest wintry
! weather.
The Supreme Court of Florida pass
! 6< l an order on Saturday, requiring the
' canvassing board of that State to re
j canvass the votes cast in the late elec
| tion from the face of the returns.—
! This was to have been done Wednes
day; but instructions were received
from Zach Chandler or one of his sub
ordinates at Washington, directing the
board to disregard the order of the
Court. This looks like revolution.
There is but little change in the
political situation since our last issue.
Both Houses of Congress have recess
ed for the holidays, and hence we have
nothing from headquarters except the
speculations of politicians and news
paper reporters as to the drift of
events.
When Congress meets and the com
mittees in the disputed States make
their reports, matters will begin to
tako shape; but until that time all ir,
mere speculation.
President Grant, who was inter
viewed a few days ago, expressed his
desire to have a fair count in the con
tested States, and his belief that the
committees now at work in those
States woald accomplish much toward
the solution of the existing political
difficulties. He stated that it was de
s'rable to establish the actual fact of
the election of either Tilden or Hajes,
for neither of them would feel satis
fied if any doubt remained of his
election, because in such a case his
position as President would not com
mand the general support required
for that station. Very well said.
We respectfully ask all persons in
debted to us to call and settle by the
first of January, or their notes and ac
counts will be put into a lawyers hands
for collection. We mean business.
