THE HAWKINSVILLE DISPATCH. VOL. 5, The Bninbridgc coUon factory wilt bo *t work in s few riay*. ■. —~ Kurt Mid the fly threaten the wheat crop to Hail and white counties. The Sabbath celebration at Macon, Tuesday, was spoiled by a heavy shower of rain. On the first of J uly next a daily mail route will be established be tween Bandersville and Station 13, on the Centra] railroad. A negro up at Forsyth has been disgusting his neighbors by trying to hang himself, and making a miserable failure. Crops in Monroe look fine; every thing Is wet! advanced. Hands work ing well, amt farmers’ prospects very flattering. The cera crop of Baker county is good. Cotton bad. Henry Morgan, Esq., a very esti mable young man of Valdosta, died on last Friday. The Savannah District Conference of the M. E. Church will meet in B<ui dersville on Thursday, the 26th inst. Dr. John J. Ford, a citizen of At lanta, died at Denver City, Colorado, on the 16th of April. Lightning killed a negro last Wed nesday night near Montgomery, Ala haiua, as he was toting home a Iwg of corn be had stolen. One old ne gro woman, viewing the body, ex claimed: “Dali, now! shore miff! dc Lord done turned Kikluxc#!” The Church Union says that it aeeras aa though women went to church not so much to prai.-e, as to be praised. Miss Marv K. Lee, daughter of the late General Robert FI. Lee, is ssid to lie engaged to Mr. Charles Upton, the cashier of the First National Hunk of Rochester, New York. The dwelling of Mr. Sim Smith, one of the finest in the place, was burned at Valdosta last Saturday night. The building was worth about nine thousand dollars, but was in sured for only fifteen hundred. Most of the furniture was saved. Kotnuax MaNFACTfRE#.—The re port concerning the cott n factory at A ugnsta, Georgia, shows the cneour aging prospects of Southern manufac ture. This factory lias been gradual ly exteading its operation,* till now it rulls 15,000 spindles and 600 looms, and consumes 130 bales of cotton per week. Tbo average daily pro duct is 52J var<t» f>e« loom, or 25,- poo yards in ail, making some eight million yards yearly. At th.s organ ization the company had $200,000 capital which by its earnings has in creased to $600,000. The par val ue of the stock is SIOO, on which it has pc id for five years past an an nual diviend of 20 per ccut. The stock is now worth $155. The Chatham Artillery ate and drank its eighty-fifty anniversary at the Marshall House, Savannah, Mon day. The following notice i* posted in all the office# of the Southern Ex press Company. BEWARE. HAWKINSVILLE, GA., THURSDAY, MAY 11, 1871. f Properly Usnea ky lHe W,»r The census of valuation of property show enormous losses for the Southern Slates. Georgia re turned in 1860, $618,232,38? value of real personal property, and in 1870 $202,563,55? —showing a loss of S4IS V 668,330. Virginia loses 168 millions, or nearly two-sevenths. North Caro lina loses 160, or more than onc-bslf. South Carolina losses 329 millions, or very nearly two-thirds. Florida loses 36 millions, or more than half- M ississippi loses 866 millions, or seven tenth#, Kentucky loses 104 millions, or about one-fifth. Tennessee loses 69 millions, or less than onc-flfth. T-miGian* Ipse* 185 millions, Otrslto'l! two-fifths. Missouri notwithstanding the change, has gained about 286 millions. - . Wlmt Frnnec Ira# to Psj Ger man}. Some calculating Yankee has set down to figuring on the French in demnity ami made out the following stunting result: “ France will have to pay 5,000,000,000 franca to Gcrnia ny sa a wnr indemnity. This in five, franc gold pieces, would weigh 55,- 00 '.ooopoundsavoird pois, Totran*' port all this gold by rail, sup|K>siug each car to carry 11,000 |K>unds, a train of 6,000 cars would lie required. When spread out on the ground, one touching the other, these five franc gold pieces would reach almost around the globe. Iffive-friinc pieces enough to make this amount were placed one above the other, they would make a column of gold 1,676 miles in height. If this column, hav ing its base in Paris, should topple over in the direction of Berlin, Berlin would be only one-third of the whole distaucc reached by tiie coins at the top of the column. .A quick cashier, aide to count 10,000 fire-franc pieces in an hour, supposing that be commenced at the age of thirty, would lie nearly seventy years of age In-fore he finish ed counting it, in case he should count eight hours daily for three hundred days every year.” A Steanot Stork.— Two Ameri can Gibm lli:i.i) as Slaves in Bit axil.— The daughters of a South ern planter arc now slaves in Brazil. The planter emigrated thither at the close of the war, and was unsuccess ful. The Brazilian law# are such that when a citizen becomes in debt, if lie ha# no property, Ids children arc sold as slaves, the prices they bring going to the payment of the obligation. Our friend, says the Nashville RoLMicn* /leaner, when he reached Brazil, unwisely became naturalized ami a South American citizen, and subject to tin: laws, thus bv hi# own volition, expatriating himself from bis native country and it# protection. IJe became involved in debt to some Brazilians. His children were sold as slaves. Thus hi« two daughters, now grown Ten nessee young Indies, are slaves, doing menial work for unlettered masters and mistresses iu Brazil, their price paying a devoted but unfortunate father’s debt 1 The amount of tbe debt, we understand, is twelve hun dred dollars in gold, and steps have been taken to have tbe amount plac ed in the hands of tbe father. A prowling panther ate up the only good looking young man in an Ore gon settlement, and the local school marms despaired). A Kentucky boy, ten years old, has set at the Testament with a will, and committed the whole of it to memory. It is a curious feet that the essay which Prevost Parade), the late min ister of France to the United States, recited, whan graduating at college, watt’’On Suicide, “ An Irishman who barf Mistered his finger by endeavoring to pull on a pair of boots, exclaimed : “I believe I shall sever gut them on until I wear them a day or two." The Cleveland (Ohio) Plaindealer tells of a woman there who was made a widow oa Sunday, was a mourner on Monday, was married on Tuesday, and was the recipient of a surprise party on Wednesday'. Corn has been planted more a bun. dantly in the vicinity of Haynville, Houston county, this year than last. The rains have, however, somewhat interfered with farming operation. 8 lie Wesley Oak. On St. Simon Island, about one half of a mile from Frederica, stands the veritable live oak, under whose wide spreading branches John and Charles Wesley preached, when Geor gia was in her colonial state, one hundred and thirty-five years ago. Tills old tree has stood the blast# of centuries, still it stands a living em blem of the divine service it afforded the founders of the M. E. Church on this continent. If the spirits of those - illustrious heroes could participate in things earthly, they certainly would exclaim in the lauguage of the po et: "Woodman, spare that tree, ->ugh, In youth It sheltered me Anu I’ll protect il now.” And to tbe great credit of oil, ire times post and present, who have and still live on the Island, it stands a liv ing nucleus around whose history so much dusters, interesting to those wh > worship at the shrine of Metho dism. But thank# to the photographic art, we have a lieau'.iful picture of the venerable tree before us, in all its mosa-eovered benuty; bat the Wes leys stand not there. No, they have passed away, but their compeers are sacred to their great memories, in the persons of Bishops Geo. F. Pierce and W. M. Wightmnn, and Rev. L. Pierce, D. D., the oldest im-lhodist preacher (to the knowledge of the writer) living. • Mr. A. J. Riddle, of our city, was the artist who mode the negatives, and will soon have them ready for sale—and they will sell all over this land. We understadd the first prof its arising from the sale of this pic ture goes to defraying the expenses of finishing a church in the city of Brunswick, a plan conceived, and if successfully carried out, will redound to the great credit of that Christian gentlemen, Rev. Chas. A. Flilwood, who was minister in charge at Bruns wick last year.— .1/noon 7elc</ra/jh . To Our M«t»»erll»er». Some of our old sulsieriber# in the States of Texas, Louisiana, and Flori da, and also in Pulaski county, have neither written nor called to see us in regard to the Dispatch for the year 1871. We would like to hear from them. Subscriber# in this county had best call and see us. I’rcs* for Isle. * We have and will sell a small print ing press, suitable for any |#.T#on wishing to print letter heads, envel opes, or circulars. Price ten dollars. It ha# no type to go with it, but such ty|#- a# the purchaser wants can be lioiight of New York or Philadelphia founders. A bargain i# offered, if called for early. Alvice to Southern Democrats.— Under this head the Metroj»olitan Re cord advise# the Southern Demo crats to stand on the platform laid down in the recent Congressional ad drcK# as tbe only platform upon which the Democracy can expect to carry tbe next Presidential election. To that end, says the editor: We call upon the Southern Demo cracy to set aside whatever person al feeling and prejudices they may still entertain, or to bold them subser vient to the general interests of tbe party. I<et tho*e who arc disposed to con tinue a factions opposition to the great majority; let those who are dis posed to question the wisdom of the address of our Congressional delega tion, bear In miud that everything which leads to weaken onr party strenghens the enemy, and let them above all take the important fact to heart, that it is only through Demo cratic ascendancy the South can be restored to its constitutional rights, and enter upon that career of pros perity which we have feebly attempt ed to foreshadow. Do right, though you have enemies. Yon cannot escape them by doing wrong and it is little gain to barter sway your honor and integrity, and divest yourself of morel courage, to gam what I Nothing. Better abide by tbe truth —frown down ail opposi tion, and rejoice in tbe feeling which must inspire a tree and independent nan. Is there s word in the English lan guage that contains alt the vowels? A lady in London somehow got the idea into her head that the devil was in her, and went to the cupboard and bung herself.
