Read their advertisement. A Sad Accident—Capt. ISTorman McDuffie Silled.—lt is seldom we nre called upon to chronicle u sadder or more unfortunate occurrence than the killing of Capt. Nurmatt McDuffie by the cars at Dullard’s Station, Macon and Brunswick Rallroa-l, on Thursday hist, while on his way to Texas. When the news was re ceived by telegraph an hour after the ac ehlant, our citizens were grief stricken at tlmt had befallen ope whom thoyhalri kdown and esteemed so long. BuJ’few men co ukl claim more friends in thireoinmunity a ml vicinity than Capt. McDuffie. For loug years (indeed, we might saytiiis entirc life,) be hud been Identified with the interests of our section, and during that time, cudcared himself to a host of the best citizens of this and a ljoiningco n; et. Two yeans ago he removed to Texas, ac companicd by his family an 1 a low triemls who ycl remain in that far-off Slate, ami to whom the mournful tidings of Ids untimely death will lie an almost unbeara ble weight of sorrow. The remains of the deceased were brought down on Thursday login's train and buried at thqCeuiulerj’in this place ou Batmlay lasi, llls Masonic brethren of Mount Hope Lodge paying the usual honors to a departed member ol their fraternity. The business houses erf the town were closed on the occasion, and a large numlicr ol citizens joined 'ln the procession. There were many sad hearts that day. A man we may say evcrylnvly liked had gone to his final resting place. May mother earth press gently o'er him, and his soul find rest in thst better world unknown to mor tals. local Improvements—Since the first of last June more dwellings and store houses have been erected in Ilawkinsvillc than for two previous years. Whether it is a strong indication of the prosperity ot the town, we arc unable to say, but new framed buildings are going up all round, and some of them very handsome. Joe Miller's side of town begins to look pretty. Just beyond the shops ! o will soon have completed a very commodious dwelling, surrounded by a neat paling. We under stand also that Messrs. Wilcox, Miller A Cos. will erect other buildings in the vicini ty for tenement purposes. Sheriff Fuighum will also soon lisve fin ished a very pretty residence opposite the Methodist Church, the location being most eligible, and in a pleasant part of town. A large quantity of rocks has been de posited on the old McCabe lot, for the purpose of laying the foundations, so we are informed, of new buildings which Capl. Leith proposes to put up during the ywar. All the carpenters have been busy for Several months, and there is no sign of a oessstion of their employment The old town “ holds it own,” remarkably well, and will continue to he the best point for the purdbme of supplies and shipment of cotton for this part of Georgia. Hurrah for Dooly! The Danner County of Georgia!— Let Georgians stand amazed when we record one of the most startling facta in agiiciiltural history. Caleb FulUngtou, living in the Third District ol'Dooly county, hats now on hand TiuitTY-EUnrr bales of cotton which he lias had ginned and packed nine vitaus. Nine bales of this cotton are now stored in J. 11. Kendrick A; Co’s warehouse, and have been there wc believe since last Spring. The remainder of the thirty-eight bales arc now being hauled to market, and we understand will be offered for stile at an early day. The above Is one of the most remarka ble incidents in the era of cotton culture, and wo urc inclined to think some of the readers of the Illsi-ATcn will doubt our statement. Yet it is positively true. Wc arc almost tempted to hoist Mr. Fulling ton's name for President of the Georgia State Agricultural Society. At any rate he should attend the next convention of the Society as a delegate from the Third District of Dooly, and perhaps lie might tell 14 what he knows about farming" to great adva: tage. Wo arc ‘STottra Truly—There is nothing that cheers a desolate heart so much as a kind act, and nothing that gives more pleasure to the inner man than a dine from the ham of a tat pig, when dressed and baked to one's notion. Charlie Coney is a clever fellow, and if anybody wants an ill-sliupcn nose or an ugly eye, the best way to get it is to dispute our word about him. Just think of his killing a three months' old pig weighing forty five pounds net, and then sending the editor one of the hams ! Now, candidly, what better deed could lie have done to call forth the admi ration of our B——oul ? “Go the whole hog or none," is not Charley’s motto. lie believes in a division. Neither docs lie say, “Root pig or die,” lor his pigs were the largest and fattest in town. In fact, Charley is himself fat, and has everything fat around him. IBs baby is the preficst and fattest in town, except little Lewis Renton, son of our young Mend Henry Wood, amt of course it would be fatal to us ifwc were to attempt to decide the ques tion <>t lieauty between them, so the mat ter is out of our bunds. Oh, My! how Cold I —Rut (lu re is no danger of freezing if you wear good, warm Clothing. Perhaps smneliody is now wanting a nice, warm and handsome stilt. If so, just let them go o J-ovc A Ladlrr's, who arc now a.lvertising to close out at a reduced price. This is awful weather, ami if you value your life, be careful ami keep on good Clothing. We lielivc Jim sold about thirty suits a few weeks ago in less than three days from their arrival. That’s the way to do. Sell a great dea 1 and m ike a little piolit ou all. It were far better to sell thirty suits at a small profit tlmu five suits at a big profit. A go.il policy. Love A Liidler know how to do tlie tiling Yon might us well try to climb a greasy pole as to keep from buying when Jiiu I-aidlcr sees your money and finds out your wants. Ami then the firm buys cotton in large and small quan tiles. In fact they do anything to accom modate customers. Amusement —Prof, ltynn and his son Holla gave exhibitions at the Court House in Monday and Ti.es day nights were witnessed by not large though exceedingly well-pleased audiences. Prof Ryan's lectures were very entertaining, especially to those capable of receiving and comprehending his re marks, while . the series of characters wnich Master Itolla represented provoked laughter from the whole house. The tertuinmcnls, both intellectual and comic a), were highly cntcresling, and gave per fect satisfaction. Many conceded that they far excelled a circus, though not to be classed ill that category of shows, as they were more chaste in every respect. More Gourds The Pulaski gourd-vine story was not altogether without its morn! effect.— George Woods, tlie author of the romance, is now the most cautious writer in the universe. He carries a rule and tape-line in liis pi Kike l to nuns' ire things.— free(w nah lieu* You’re another, Harris. Wc tiiltud to resume tiie publication of tlie gourd sto ry in a few days. Laurens county shall have a hearing very soon. Pulaski beats the Ualancc of the world, but Dodge coun ty beats Pulaski, and now wc have a letter from Laurens that beats Dodge clean out of her boots. II [no oilier county competes for the premium on gourds, Laurens shall have it. A Kansas family contains fifteen chil dren nine of whom are girls. Recently their fond papa bought them nine dresses •piece. A good place for sewing machine agents. Sad Accident at Dullard Station - Captain off orman McDuffie- Kill ed. —Thursday morning as the up passim gel train on the Macon and Brunswick road was passing Bullard Station, ('apt NoruiauJdd tuftle stepped limn the car while the train was yut in JnOtien, and when walking up the platform stcp3 to en ter the depot, slipped and fe)l between thf moving train and tlie platform and was instantly crushed to death. These are the particulars as nearly ns we could get them, and suppose they are in tlie main, correct. Captain McDuffie was about fif ty years ol' age and has been for many yenrs an iiitluentinl citizen of Pulaski connty, until-two years ago, when lie re moved to Texas. A short tiiuu sineu lie returned to visit his old friends and ac quaintances, and had just started back to his home and family. Alas i alas Ihe will never reach them. Several persons from near Ilawkinsvillc were in company w ith him on route for Texas where they propose settling. Captain Mcl)ufiic will be re membered us tlie gentluuiuii who had dur ing the war, a considerable controversy with General Howell Cobb in regard to a steamer seized by tlie General on the Oc mulgcc river while in command of this dis trict. lie was well known throughout this section, and his sudden death lias brought sadness to many hearts.—Tele graph. - Ttao Central Railroad Pare Tick ets —The correspondent of the Baltimore Bin writes from Washington : “ The Con. trill Railroad Company of Georgia has been issuing a ticket covering a certain number of fares over tlie road, and which lias been used as a kind of currency by the company and by the community. This is in violation of tlie national hanking law, and the comptroller of the currency has culled attention to the matter. Office Special AgentM AS R K HAWKIXMVt t.l-K, oa., ) January 25, 1879.
