town and County News. t DgsmsTUY.—Dr. M. 8. Jobson will return to Ilawkinsville on the 16th of March, and remain till Ist of April He will be found at Mrs. i Hudspeth's hotel. Cotton. —We have noticed more cotton than usualjin town this week. Most of it comes in small lots. The market ranges from 19 to 20 cents to-day (Wednesday.) Returned. —Mr. D. Rhodes returned from New York yesterday evening- His new goods are arriving. Mr. W. W. Ricks, of the firm of Kicks A Joiner, left for market on Monday morning, last, for the pur chase of new goods. Books for subscription to the nawk insville and Eufaula Railroad will be opened at Americus on the 29th «f this month. Late Spring.—We have never known as late u spring os the present. Farmers are delayed in their work. The peuch and plum trees are scarce ly blooming. The corn planted two f weeks age is not yet above the ground, and will probably have to be re planted. t Death of an Old Resident.— Mrs. Fartin, mother of Marshal John K. Partin, died in this place on Tues day evening Iqst, after a protracted illness. Her remains were interred in Orange drove Cemetery Wednes day afternoon. Returned. —Mr. Lewis W. Mobley has returned from the Medical Col lege at Augusta whither he has been the past winter preparing lor the practice of irie Heine. Mr. Rolicrt 0. Engrain nlan return ed a few days ago from Philadelphia Medical College, which lie proposes attending again next fall. Deaths From Meningitis.—We are informed that Mr. William lay lor, living on Quin Swamp in Dodge county, had three of his children to die last week with the above named fatal disease. It is said that others in the neighborhood have been at tacked (with it, though we have heard of no dentils since those mentioned. This kind of sickness seems to l e more prevaliant just at this sea son of tholyoar. * Real Estate Sale— Mr. James 11. Dyches has purchased the lot on •Jackson street between Messrs Mc- Cormick k Oliver’s Store and the lot oi Win. M. Oliver deceased, known as the property of Rev. John M. Holds, of Macon. The purchase embraces one hundred and twenty feet front, and runs liack seventy feet. It is a very •desirable piece of real estate, and •when built upon will become an at tractive point of business. Reorganization of the Hawkins villi Brass Band— For several months we have missed the thrilling strains of our band, the members of which were either too pressed with business or otherwise failed to have .regular meetings. W T e learn that on Monday night last there was a reor ganization of the) Band, Mr. Jacoby 'being elected President and W'illie Tavlor Secretary and Treasurer- The following are the names of the .gentlemen composing the Band : A. Jacoby, Thos. Ilcnly, Willie Taylor, John Fale, Jimmie McDuffie, A. Sta srowski, Robt. 0. Pate, R. L. Stapler, J. J. Jelks, F. H. Bozeman, John K. Partin. Their instruments are of the very best, aud wc have no fears but that good music will be given to our citi zens. — More Improvements—llawkins rille must surely be ou “rising grounds,” taking into consideration the many new buildings now being erected and ;the preparations going on for others in contemplation. We notice that Mr. Chas. T. Lathrop is having new wings built to the two story building near the Court House, and when completed, wc understand, the same is to be occupied as a ho tel. Wc also learn that Mr. D. G. McCormick has recently purchased the vacant lot between bis residence and the Court House, and intends erecting thereon, at an early day, a handsome framed building. These improvements will add greatly te the looks of that part of town, and we expect to see, in a year or two, all the vacant Jots in that neighborhood • occupied with nice dwellings. A “Flee Club” is being organized la Covington, Ga.— Exchange. The members of the club will hate to display considerable energy in “clubbing” the fleas. Messrs. Wilcox, Miller a Co’s I Establishment. —We call attention of our readers, and especially those living at a distance from Hawkins ville, to the advertisement of Messrs. Wilcox, Miller k Cos. In their wag on and Buggy Repository will be found vehicles of both Northern and home manufacture, put up in the most fashionable and durable style, and which they arc enabled to sell at such prices that justly entitle them to the patronage of this section. It is almost surprising to know the vast amount of work turned out of this estalishment aunualiy, and the large number of hands employed therein. At present they are running five forges, and a full eorapleteaient of wood workmen, wiio are kept busy in their various departments. At this season of the year they require con siderable force in the manufacture of fanning implements, this class of their work being considered superior and better adapted to the wants of farmers than that usually obtained from other sources. The buggies aud wagons made by Messrs. Wilcox, Miller A Cos. are said by those wiio have purchased and used them, to bu the best and most serviceable iouiul in the country. Mr. Miller poscsscsa thorough knowl edge of every branch of the bus iness, and has managed the affairs of the Company so successfully that the custom of a large sco|>c of country is fast finding its way to their estab lishment. The firm lias in its employ Mr. E. G. Gilmore, a most excellent painter, and one that can turn out a handsome job on every occasion. We deem an enterprise like tiic above not only one of great value to t!ic immediate community, but quite indispensable to the country at large, and trust that its patronage will con tinue to increase. Heavy Sai.k op Fertilizers.— Wc observed that on Monday last the streets and byways of our town were unusually crowded with wagon* and carts, nil here afler fertilizers. We don’t remember ever seeing as many vehicles at one time in the place for the same purpose. This ex traordinary course on the part of the f rm : ng class bodes no good, we fear, for our country next fall and winter. It sceuis that nearly every business house in the town lias the agency for the pale of guanos. But everybody’s htuiuuss is nobody's business, there fore anybody lias a right, in this free and enlightened part of the Republic, to choose their own business. Shooting Whisky. —A peddler of tin ware passed through Hawkin'* ville last Saturday morning, and af ter imbibing a couple of doses of som -body's whisky, W.is so fired with its internal effect- 1 , that he discharged his pistol at one of the hungry bovine* upon the street. He was chased a short distance, and being captured after an effort to pull trigger on his pursurcr, was carried lie fore Mayor Watson, and fined twelve dobras, lie paid it, at the same time remark ing that in his town, (which tie claim e I to lie Perry,) they let people shoot whenever they wanted to. This t-i*--. taiuly is a mistake, or somebody would long ago have taken a “ pop'' at that editor over there. Circuitous. —Mr. C. I’. Brown has acirctts horse. He performs admirably and to delighted crowds. Just tie his iicad and tail together and lie prances round and round like a loving couple in a fashionable waltz. The exhibitions arc free. Ten barrels fine Wilcox county Syrup for sale cheap for cash at J. H Dyches’. The Sandcrsviile Georgian says a party of gentlemen from that town killed, last Saturday, one hundred and fifty-eight snipe, doves, and a dozen or so rabbits thrown in for good measure. But Hawkiosville can beat that feat. One of our h'hoye shot a snipe on Friday last and paid four dollars for the fun. Tho Mayor done the charging. The Hayneville Sunday-school has determined to purchase an organ. This is a good move. The following is the way they call out the figure of a “reel” out West; “Dance to the gal with the yellow shawl; now down outside and up the middle ; turn to your partner, Isaac Smash, and now to that entire stran ger; sac hex to the right and left; ra de too, da dude; now to Peter Schwitcball’s daughter; turn to your pertner every one; set to the flaring frill; balance one and spin aboot the girl with, the hole in the heel of her stocking!” Rev. F. A. Branch’s Lecture on Intempnrance*— We are informed by the Perry Journal that the Methodist Church in that place “was full on Wednesday night last to hear the Lecture by Rev. F. A. Branch, on the evils of intemperance. The Tem plars appeared in their ,rcgalin, ami had out almost if not quite their en tire membership. The exercises be gan by singing “The Temperance Rallying Song.” The thirty-fifth chapter of Jeremi ah was then read, after which was sung “The Prayer for tho lntcmjier ate.” Then the Rev. A. J. Dean let! in prayer, when was sung “The Cooling Spring.” This was followed, says the Jour, nai, by the lecture, which was the most complete and conclusive argu ment on the subject that we ever heard. The speaker showed that the effect of alcoholic stimulants is det rimental to the physical, mental and moral ([parts of man, and then ar gued with what seemed to us irresis tible logic, that all should unite to put down the mighty evil. An organiza tion for that purpose is in your midst, said he, and you should join it; if you are not in danger yourself, you have relatives or friends who are, and you should do what you enu to stop the onward tide of destruction that is threatening to overwhelm them. Christians should join the temperance army, because it aims to put away •me of the greatest obstructions Chris tianity ever met. For an hour or more the audience listened with the strictest attention. We doubt not many were convinced that they ought to join the Templars ; will they have the moral courage to act bn their convictions, or will they, for the sake of their ap|>etite, refuse their co-operation witli one of the no blest reformatory movements ever in augurated ? The exercises closed witli the fol lowing song, and then the doxology and benediction: Sad ts the drunkard's life, Wasting in crime, Far from the path of light. Reckless of time, Toms of repentant grief. Chill ns lliey start. Hardly a lender thought Waives in ids heart. Often a single spark, Kindlea a llame. Kindness may win him buck, Prayer may reclaim. Go where he sits alone, Burdened with care, Tell linn his sinful course, Plead with him there. Picture a happy past. •Gone from ins sight. Bring hack Ids early youth, Cloudless and bright. Tell how n mother's rye. Watched while he slept. Tell how she prayed for him. Borrowed mid wept. Point to the tauter land, Home of tins blest. Where she passed away, Gone to her rest. O'er that deparied one, Memory will yearn, God in his mercy grant, He may retun . We met an old darky, says an ex change, trudging along witli a heavy side of bacon, which be bad just bought, swinging over hi* shoulder We observed that he was miserably clad, anti we felt sorry for him, for a bitter cold wind was blowing. We remonstrated with him: “ Why do you spend your money .or meat? yon’ti better buy a coat.” This obi gentleman of African descent stopped, looked us full in the face for a mo ment, and then said in most solemn tones : “ Massa, when lax my buck for credit, it gives it; when 1 spook to dis (laying his hand upon his •‘bread basket,”) it. call* for dc* cash.” The colored debating club in Grffin recently debated this question : “If punkin seed arc planted on one man’s land and the vine runs over and punkins grow on another man’s land, whose punkin am it?” The Local editor of the Enterprise wants to employ a double-jointed, freckle faced, knock-kneed, red-head ed, cross-eyed ruffian to do the box ing for his column. The Baptists of Forsyth have de termined to build a new church on the site of the old one. Governor Smith has appointed Mr. Wm. S. Darnell, of Milledgcvillc, Principal Keeper of the penitentiary. Mr. Milburn Turner, an old citizen of Milledgeville, died last Mon day week—aged 71 years. The stock of cotton at Augusta on last Monday week was 15,006 bales ms ascertained by actual couut Fifty-six negroes wore baptized in the Savannah river at Augusta on Sunday. Over 2000 spectators wit nessed the ceremooj. Perry Items. —Tito Journal says two of the citizens of Perry, Messrs.* T. W. Gurr and G. V. Markcrt, got into a difficulty Wednesday evening last, in which the former was bruised and the latter cut—neither hurt seriously. After a preliminary trial before Jus tice Iloltzclaw, Mr. Gurr gave bond to appear at tho next term of the Su perior Court The negro, Wesley Jefferson, who was knocked over with a fence rail last week, died Monday. The ver dict of the coroner’s jury was that he came to his death at the hands of An tony Hose. The latter fled when the deed was committed, and lias not been heard of. * A Jilted Lover. Lady, since we art- to part, Cans't thou give me buck my heart ? Give It; then I go in peace— All my thought-* of thee shall cense ; For thou hast played a double part, Wiuning thus another heart, Mayn't tlimi to him be true— This for thee my last adieu! None there in- too honest are ; If. pereliance there might be one Who hath never heart undone. She's u marvel 'iieatli the sun ! Mr. Betijatnin Cagle, one of the oldest anil most respected citizens of Henry county, died last Monday. The following preparation by a Georgia poet, is said to have a per sonal reference. We are sorry for the referee: It is but nature, when in jail, To cell one's mates; ltut lie who tells the guilty lulu Ere harm awaits, And perpetrates so vile a sale, Hath i»irpi/ tnitit. A politician boasted tlint he could tell any kind of wine or liquor, Blind folded, merely by the taste. He was tried witlt one kind after another and really named them. At last a glass of water was handed him. He tasted it, hesitated, tasted it again, smelted it, re tasted it and then said, “I give it up. That’s a brand of liquor I never got hold of before.” Spring Calicoes.—M'-ssrs. John Hen ry & Cos have rel ived lids week a stock oi Spring Calicoes, of finest quality, and are selling at 12| rents.
