Bob Toomb* unit III* Wealth. The Griflln Star has this : Years ago when Boh Toombs was a young lawyer, he was invited to go in with several other parties in a speculation in Viltl Western land lie put in $5,000 and got 100,000 acres of laud, which is at a rate of five cents jar acie. The war ended and ltob Toombs returned to his ancestral acres in Wilkes to find his large force of slaves set free, and himself an out. law of the Government, with shattered fortunes; with spirits crushed niul health impaired. Believing himself personally unsafe, he went to Europe, where he remained until he could safely return to Georgia. Return ing to die upon his native heath, he expected confiscation and poverty. But fortune smiled on him. The Western lands came into market, and his income now from the proceeds of that purchase is said to be about twenty-five thousand dollars per an. num. The old Wilkes homestead is still his ewn. He gets as much law practice as lie can attend to at his own price, llis health has much im proved, and under all these circum stances we should say Uncle Bobucl was decidedly comfortable, and we arc glad of it. An Indian War Looked For.— Correspondents in Southern Color ado and New Mexico state that ex tensive snd combined Indian dep utations are seriously' apprehended in sparsely settled parts of those Ter ritories. The Kiokas, Arrapahocs, Cheyennes. Commanches, Navajoes aid Apaches have held frequent councils during the past winter, at which it was endeavored to dissipate all tribal prejudices, and effect a com bination for a general Indian war. Recent murders and robotics in New Mexieo, Arizona, Texas and other places, are referred to as evidence of the intentions of the Indians, but whether a complete combination has been effected it is not known. While riding home from Rome on Friday of last week, Mr. Cloud is, of Lloyd county, had his buggy tom to pieces by the running away of the mule he was driving. His little son who was with him was instantly killed. A printer, having been “flung” by liis sweet heart, tried to comuimit suicide. The “devil” found him out and took him to the sanctum where the editor was writing duns to delin quent subscribers. The picture of despair presented by the editor reconciled the printer to his fate. He began to consider himself as com paratively happy. Since the postoflicc in Rennslaer (Ind.) was located in a barroom, it is said that the number of men who “expect a letter” a ltttle after sup ]>er-time has largely increased in that community. Another venerable Virginian, of the colored persuasion, has falien a victim to the poisonous influence of tobacco. He smoked and chewed for 110 years, and was cut ofT (finc-cut) in his prime at 118. A story is told of a Scotchman who went to a lawyer for advice, and detailed the circumstances of the case. “Have you told the facts precisely as they occurred ?” said the lawyer “Oh, yes, sir; I thought it best to tell you the plain truth. Ye can put the lies in yourself.” The best Dolly Yardeu story yet, is told of a young lady of Little Rock, Arkan as, who had a very small kit ten she named Dolly Yardeu, but ns it age, and other devel opments, she discovered, by close ob servation, that it was not that kind •fa cat, so she reebristened it Thomas Yarden. A sensible Texas judge lately di vorced a <lys|»eptic man from a lazy wife, on account of licr wretched rooking. YOKE OF OJtEN LOST Ten Dollars Howard- Left my farm on the third week in April, two young, medium size, well broke Oxen, marked with a crop and undcrbil iu one «ar and crop and overhit in the other. < )nc of them is of red color, with white l ice, and some white alioul the flanks. When lie left lie was wearing a small bell. The other ox is red and white-puled, with lirge horns, ami resembles a hull very Much, also cauuot close his lips.
