A Wild Cat Story. We And this in th* la»t Early County Xowh: Ou M.mday night last, about one ortwo o’clock, Mr. W. A. Kuctannon, of Early county, who is no* refilling on his plantation about a mile from town, was aroused from bis slumbers by a noise at bis horse-lot. On re pairing to itis stable be fouutl both hit horses had broken o’jft of their stalls, where it was thought they were securely fastened, and left the premi ses. Oil going to the lot he had I called to his brother, Major, to go with hitn. Finding the horses gone, “Willy," wen*, in pursuit in the di rection In* heard them running, Ma jor standing in the public road n front of the lot. He hail stood there out a minute or 'wo when he was ap proncliud from behind bv a wild eat which seized him by the hip. He turned round and kicked it off, but it immediately sprung at him and seized him by the breast, each time bring ing the blood. Major got it by the throat this time and threw it off. bnt it catue again, and inflicted another wound on his shoulder. The fight was, of course, not altogether a silent one, and the noise had attracted the attention of his brother, who called to know what the matter was. I'pon getting a reply from Major that he was about to l>e eat up by a “var mint," Willy came to the rescue. On his near approach to the scene of con diet, the cat immediately turned upon him. lie succeeded iit keeping it off until he could draw Ids pistol. As soon as possible he commenced firing upon it, and probably wounded it. as it ran off’ and jumped the yard fence, passing around the yard a few times, retreating under the dwelling house. A freed man was called to reinforce the party, and alter several shots from a rifle ids catship was fully conqurc I. It was not a large cat but certainly one of the fiercest of its species. It weighed only eighteen pounds. On examining the horses next morning it was found that they had both liccn bitten by the cat, and its tracks were plainly to be seen in the stables. Tho Cotton Tax- Wabijinotoji, January 10.—The frienda of the cotton tax refunding scheme are making a powerful, (and what they think will prove a success ful) movement in furtherance of their object. A circular accompanied by the signatures of Judge B. R. Curtis, Messrs. Hughe", Sharkey and Iler schol V. Johnson, as well as memo rials and resolutions of nearly all the Southern States and cities, has been signed by all the members of Con gress from t lie cotton States, pres ent. This circular, which, with ac companying papers, will be laid on the desk of every member, is a de claration that they intend to press the passage of an act this session, to refund the tax collected by the Gen eral Government after the close of the late war. • LATER. Washington, January 20.—The bill for the refunding of the cotton tax as agreed upon by .the members of the House from the cotton grow ing States in their meeting on Sat urday last, answers the bill now pend ing before the Committee on Ways and Means, by declaring in the first section that the restitution of the tax shall be made to the party who aet ua.ly paid the lax. whether paid by himself, or his agent, attorney, or factor. The bill as above amended wn* introduced In the House this morning by Mr. Fierce, of Missis sippi an<l referred to the Committee on Wins and Means. “I'm Cowtno Hack Again." —The Eufaula Times announces the return ol a Texas emigrant to that citv, on his way hack to the old plantation, near Chattahoochee, Florida. He went to Texas with his young family —spent all lie had—found nothing to do, and returns penniless, but wiser, and resolved to redeem his fortunes l.y hard work on the old place. He reports Texas now overrun with emi grants and that the sufferings and wants of many are extreme, and that they would jo\ fully return to their old homes if they had the means of doing so. Money alone commands sympathy for the Texas emigrant, and however much he may desire to labor for a living, if he cannot get employment, as is the case now in thousands of instances, he is denoun ced as a fool by the old settlers for emigrating without plenty ol money. Mr. Jeremiah Coorabcs, an old cit izon of Wilkes county, was seized with an epileptic fit last Friday while crossing o small stroam, and falling into the water, face downward, was drowned.
