A large proportioif'oi the Ameri- •
can people are reiiless, roving, scat'
tering, driven about from place to
place by every spring freshet of
popular excitement. Their desire
for (juick gai na, ami their perpetual
motion wears them out prematurely.
They build houses for lifetime resi
dences, and dre ready to sell out!
their newly builiTioineslcads a jveek
after it is finished—lor perhaps less
than it cost—and off they go, per ;
petually swinging around the circle
of chronic change. To the pleas
ures ofhome ami neighborhood at
tachment, to repose of feeling and
content of mind, and love ot objects
around them, they are strangers.
The fruition of they plant they
rarely witness. Os all their posses
sions, they have nothing home-like
to gladden their hearts. The gar
dens they lay out, the furniture ihey
buy, and the houses they, build, af
ford no home-loving memories.—
After wearing out half a life time in
perpetual change* of habitation,
with little gain and great loss, they
see in their past career nothing but
failure! Habits wayward, the mind
perplexed, the purpose cowed, their
energies Rallied and disappointed,
they surrender to fate, and accept
in moody despair their abject situa
tion ; and often, with conscience
scared and morals wrecked, without
friends or homes, they settle down
100 late, and die among strangers.
A good home, and the queen of the
homestead, a good wife, are essen
tial to the happiness of every man,
and nothing will as surely attach
children to parents and to home vir
tues as a life-long homestead, the
memories of which grow in delight
with every increasing year.— Ex.
What is an Old Maid? —Never
be afraid of becoming an old maid,
fair reader. An old maid is far more
honorable than a heartless wife, and
“single blessedness” is greatly supe
rior, in point of happiness, to wed
ded life without love. “Fall not in
love, dear girls—beware !” says the
song. But we do not agree with
said song on this question. On the
contrary, we hold that it is a good
thing to fall in love, or get in love, if
the object is a worthy one. To fall
in love with an honorable man is as
proper as it is for an honorable man
to fall in love with a virtuous and
admirable woman ; and what could
be a more gratifying spectacle than
a sight so pure, so approaching, in
its devotion, to the celestial ? No ;
fall in love as soon as you like, pro
vided it he with a suitable person.
Fall in love, and then marry ; but
never marry unless you do love.
That’s the Great point. Never mar
ry for a “home” or a “husband.”
Never degrade yourself by becoming
a parly to such an alliance. Never
sell yourself body and soul, on terms
so contemptible. Love dignifies all
things; it ennobles all conditions.
With love, the marriage rite is truly
a sacrament; without it the ceremo
ny is a base fraud, and the act a hu
man desecration. Marry for love or
not at all. Be “an old maid,” it
fortune throws not in your way the
man of your heart; and though the
witless may sneer and the jester may
laugh, you still have your reward in
an approving conscience and a com
paratively peaceful life. For well
to-do old bachelors we have no sym
pathy ; they ought to be taxed nine
tenths of all they are worth to sup
port women and children.
Thoughtfulness. —Young man,
in the Hush of early strength, stop
and think ere you take a downward
step. Many a precious life is
wrecked through caielessness alone.
If you find yourself in low compa
ny, do not sit carelessly by till you
are gradually but surely drawn into
the whirlpool of iniquity and shame,
but think of the consequences of
such a course. Rational thought
will lead you to seek the society of
your superiors and you must im
prove by the association. A benev
olent use of your example and influ
ence for the elevation of your infe
riors is a noble thing; even the most
depraved are not beyond such help.
But the young man of impressible
character, must, at least think, and
beware, lest he fall himselfa victim.
Think before you touch the wine;
see its efTecls upon thousands, and
that you arc no stronger than they
were in their youth. Think before
you allow angry passions to over
come your reason ; it is thus that
murderers are made. Think be
fore, in a dark hour of temptation,
lest you become a thief. Think
well ere a lie or an oath passes your
lips ; for pure speech only, can
merit respect. Ah ! think on things
true and lovely, and of good report
that there may be better men and
happier women in the world,
At the grand reception of Grant
at Bangor, Maine, the word “wel
come” in large letters was placed
over the door of the jail. The jailor
was probably excited, and wanted
to “celebrate” the occasion with ih%
rest of the citizens, but didn’t seem
to think how his “welcome” might
be construed.
The wise man is cautious, but not
cunning : judicious but not crafty ;
making, vittue the measure of using
his excellent understanding in the
conduct ofWs life.

&£ A Skeptic’s Confession.
Bible. —Sometimes a skep
tic has to confess In spite of hidlself
the Injth and beauty of ilie Word
he ordinarily denies. Mr; Parker
has said some of the worst words a
gainst the Bible ever written. Hefie
are those of a contrary sort:
The Bible is read of Sunday in
ail the thirty thousand pulpits of the
land. In all the temples of Chris
tendom is its voice lilted up week
ffey week. The sun never sets on
its gleaming -page. It. goes equally
to the cottage of the plain man and
the palace of the king. It is woven
into the literature ol the scholar, and
colors the talk of the street. The
bark of the merchant cannot sail the
seas without it—no ship of war goes
to conflict hut the Bible is there. It
enters men’s closets, mingles in all
the brief joys and cheerfulness of
life, the alii.meed maiden prays God
in Scripture for strength in her new
duties ; men are married by Scrip
ture. The Bible attends them in
their sickness; when the lever of
the world is on them, the aching
head finds a softer pillow if its leaves
lie underneath. The mariner es
caping from shipwreck clutches this
first of his treasures, and keeps it
sacred to God. It goes with the
peddler in his crowded pack, cheers
him ut the eventide when he sits
down dusty and fatigued, and bright
ens the freshness of his morning face.
It blesses us when we are born,
gives names to half Christendom,
rejoices with us, has sympathy with
our mourning, tempers our grief to
finer issues. It is the belter part of
sermons. It lilts man above him
self ; our best of uttered prayers are
in its storied speech, wherewith our
fathers and patriarchs prayed. The
timid man, about awakening from
his dream of life, looks through the
glass ol Scripture, and his eye grows
bright; he does not fear to stand a
lone, to tread the way, unknown and
distant, to lake the Death Angel by
the hand and bid farewell to wife,
and babes, and home. Men rest on
the Bible their dearest hopes.—Zi
on Herald.
Wiss Sayings.
Few accidents arc so unhappy but
may be mended by prudence: few
so happy but may be ruined by im
prudence.
Men make themselves ridiculous,
not so much by the qualities they
have, as by the affectation of those
they have not.
lie generally talks most who has
least to say.
To say Utile and perform much, is
the characteristic ol a great mind.
A man that gives bis children a
habit ft’industry, provides for them
bitter than by giving them a stock
of money.
Do thou be wise : prefer the per
son before the money, virtue before
beauty, tile tnind before ihe body ;
then thou hast a wife, a friend, a
companion, a second self, one that
bears an equal share with thee in all
thy toils and troubles.
Return the civilities thou receiv
est, and be ever grateful for favors.
A vindictive temper is not only
uneasy to others, but to them that
have it.
A man, like a walch, is to be val
ued for his goings.
He that does good for good’s sake,
seeks neither praise nor reward,
though sure ot both at last.
Force may be subdued, but love
gains; ami he that forgives first,
wins the laurel.
The covetous, the angry, the
proud, the jealous, the talkative, can
not but make ill friends, as well as
false.
FA CUTIS!
Why is B like a hot fire?—Be
cause it makes oil boil.
Two reasons why some persons
don’t tnind their own business : One
is, they liavn’t any business; and
the other, they havn’t any mind.
“Have I not a right to he saucy,
it 1 please ?” asked a young lady of
an old bachelor. “Yes, if you please,
but not when you displease,” was
the answer.
We have heard of an economical
man who always takes his meals in
front of a mirror—lie does this to
double the dishes. If that isn’t phi
losopby, we should like to know
what is.
A lawyer engaged in a case tor
mented a witness so much with
questions that the poor fellow at last
cried for water. “There,” said the
Judge, “I thought you’d pump him
dry.”
Suwarrow, the great Russian
general, even in peace always slept
fully armed, boots and all. “When
1 was lazy,” he said, “and wanted
to enjoy a comfortably sleep, 1 usu
ally took off one spur.”
The latest Trisli bull we read of,
is the case of an Irish gentleman
who, in order to raise the wind
whereby to relieve himself from pe
cuniary embarrassment, got his life
insured for a large amount and then
drowned himself.
We never read a certain patent
pill advertisement bearing the start
ling caution “Take them and live ;
neglect them and die!” without
thinking that the words import pre
cisely the demand of the highway
man—“ Your money or your life!”
