Beautiful Hands.
Suc’i beautiful, beautiful hat 6e,
I They’re neither white nor small,
j And you, I know, would scarcely think
I That they were fair at all.
I’ve looked on hands whose form and hue
A • lptor's dream might he,
e are tin‘SC aged w r.n ’tied hands
Most beautilul to me.
Such beautiful, beauiif.il hands—
h art were weary and sad,
These patient hand-i kept toiling on
That children might bo glad.
I almost weep, as looking back
To childhood’s distant day,
I think liovv these hands rested not,
When mine ivcie at tin:,- play.
Such beautifu l , beautiful bauds,
They’re grow it -g feeble now ;
For time and pain have left their woik
On hand, and heart-, and brow.
Alas! alas! the nearing time,
And the sad. sad day to me,
When ’neath the daisies, out of s r ght,
These hands will folded be.
But oli ! beyond this shadow-lamp,
Where all is bright and fair,
I know fi;li well those dear old hands
Will palms of victory bear.
Where crystal streams, through endless years,
Flow overgoldtn sands.
And where the old grow young again,
I'll cla/p my mother's hands.
Curiosities of Memory.
John Kemble used to say that he
could learn a whole number of the
Morning Lost in lour days, nnd Gen.
Christie made a similar assertion,
but it. is not known how far either
of them verified this statement. Rob
ert Dillon could repeat in the morn -
ing six columns ol a newspaper he
had read over night. During the
repeal debates in the House of Com
mons thirty-seven years ago, one of
the members wrote out his speech,
sent it to the newspapers and re
peated it to the house in the even
ing. It was found to be die same
verbatim as that which he had writ
ten out. John Fuller, a land agent
in Norfolk, could remember every
word of a sermon, and write it cor
rect after going home. This was
tested by comparing his written ac
count with the clergyman’s manu
script. Scaliger could repeat a
hundred verses or mote after having
lead them a single lime. Seneca
could repeat two thousand woids on
hearing them once. Magliaht cclii,
who had a prodigious memory, was
once pul to a severe tt si. A gentle
man lent him a manuscript, -a huh
was read and returned. The own
er, sometime alierwar s, pretending
he had lost it, tagged. Maghai" cchi
to write out as much as he could re
member, whereupon the latter, at>-
tiealing to his memory, wrote out
the wiiote essay. Cyrus, it some
of the old hisioiians are to lie credit
e i could remember th nan eof every
soldier in his large arm . Th: c
was a Corsican boy who could re
hearse 40.000 words, whether sense
or nonsense, as they were dictated,
aud then repeat them in the reverse
order, without making a single mis
take. A physician of Alassachuseis,
about half a ceututy ago, could re
peat the whole of “l\ ridtse Lost”
without mistake, although he had
not read it for 20 years. Euler, the
great mathematician, when he be
came blind, could repeat the whole
of Virgil’s “/Eneid,” and could re
member the first hue and the lasi
line on every page of the particular
edition which he had been accus
tomed to read belore he became
blind.
One kind of retentive memory
may be considered as the re
sult of sheer hird wok, a de
termination towards one particular
achievement without reference ei
ther to cultivation or to memory on
other subjects. This is frequently
shown by persons in humble life in
regatd to the Bible. An old beggar
man at Sterling, known some forty
years ago as Blind Aleck, afforded an
instance ot this. He knew the whole
Bible by heart; insomuch that if a
sentence were rend to him he could
tell the b: ok, chapter, and verse; or,
if the book, chapter and verse were
named he could give the exact
words. A gentleman to test
him repeated a verse, purposely
makingono verbal inaccuracy. Aitck
hesita ed, named the place where
the verse is to be found, but at the
same time pointed out the verbal
error. The same gentleman asked
him to repeal the ninetieth verse of
the seven) It chapter of the Book of
Numbers. Alec almost instantly
replied: “There ts no such verse;
i that chapter litis only eighty-nine
( verses.”
A recent comfortable writer says :
We resemble the self-complacent old
squire in the family pew, spoken ot
by Washington Irving, who chuck
led al seeing the eyes of his poorer
parishioners directed toward him
whenever the parson spoke of the
difficulty of a rich man entering the
Kingdom of Heaven.
No. 31.
Life and Inactivity.—lt a
: steam-engine is slopped suddenly,
and led unused tor a long period,
the piston rusts lust in the cylinder,
the packing corrodes the rods, and
dust thickly covers every part.—
When the human trame is inactive
land torpid for a length of time, the
I muscles relax, the nerves lose their
tone, the organs refuse to perform
1 tin ir (unctions and the whole of that
I great machine—the human frame—
iis disorganized. Day in and day
lout men sit poring over ledgers and
jduy -books until they are addfehead-.
led, and the figures swim before
j their eyes. When evening comes,
and business hours are over, instead
ot taking a walk, so as to send the
blond dancing and tingling to the re
motest of their frames, they get into
some omnibus, and drowsily roll to
their doors. Avery great portion
of the minor ailments llesh is heir
to is caused by laziness. An
led individual goes to a doctor;
“something is wrong inside,” but
lie doseu’t know exactly where.—
Thereupon the physician looks
grave, and says, “Alt! dyspepsia;”
and fortliwill) orders tonic, aperients
and what not, when all the lazy
men wants is a two-mile tramp, or
a good old fashioned bouncing on a
hard-trolling horse. A certain eas
tern potentate, feeling himself out of
sorts on one occasion, sent lor his
pli s sician and demanded a cure.—
“Take this mace,” said the physi
cian, “mount a horse, and swing the
instrument backward and forward,
riding meanwhile at a rapid pace.—
Certain drugs concealed in the han
dle will then exude ; your excellen
cy will then absorb them anti be
cured.” And he was cured, says
die legend; the shrewd min of
medicine knew full well that all the
king required was fresh air and ex
ercise, and he took this method of
prescribing them. It is better to
wear out than to rust out, and shoe
leather is far less cosily than irretli
cil advice. Stretching the legs re
lieves the tension on the purse
strings, and the cheapest as well as
the best medicine for duiiues, head
aches, stupidity, hypochondria, and
ill temper, is fresh air and suulighi.
These arc sovereign remedies ; but

Sir William Herschel, after ac

that he could follow a cluster u'stars
with bis telescope, constructed ex
pressly lorthe investigation, as far
back as would require 330,000 years
for the transmission of its lighi.—
But, presumptuous as it may seem,
we must be permitted to doubt this
assertion, as the same telescope,- in
the same master hand, was not suf
ficiently powerful to resolve even
the uobiae in Orion. Nor must wo
forget that light, our only clew to
those unsearchable regions, expands
and decomposes in its progress ; and
coming from a point so remote, its
radiant waves would be disperse in
space. Thus the reflection is forced
upon us that new clusters and sys
tems, whose beaming light will nev
er reach our earth, still throng be
yond ; and that, though it is permit
ted to man to behold the immensity,
he shall never see the bounds of the
creation.
