I)Brenewed once I in ten years, giving $129,600,000 as the annual cost, to which should be added, howover« at least hall as much more for repairs, making the aggregate of 194,400,000 83 the an nugualmmd expense—a sum, we believfe lwfMf Hk;; icttwl*ffgh rwf , yen quite beyond comprehension. Nich olas Biddle estimated that the “fence tgx” of Pennsylvania was SIO,OOO -a year. General jas. T. Worth ington, of Ohio, says there are IS,» 000,000 acres ofland in Ohio iuclos ad with mijes’apf fepsap, at a. prime cpsl of $115,000,000 and it u yearly expense for repairs, tie., of $7,650,000. ‘To Prepare Lard to Kerr.—A very itilelige.Bl lady furnishes to the “South-Lapd” the following: Lo one gallon of lard, before it is rendered, add one ounce of sal soda, dissolved in a gill of water. Do not fill jour pots more than half litll, as the soda makes it foam and boil-over. No other water is required than that in which the soda is dissolved. When your land is done it will be as clear as spring water—no foam—and the cracklings will be eaten up. Strain through coarse cloth into jars, and set to cool. Lard put up in this way will keep lor two years, hard and firm, throughout the summer. Ilest Horses Jor Farm Use. —The hardest work on the farm for horses is breaking up sod, which is certain ly not onc-eighth of the whole work. Light horses, w eighing 1,100 or 1,- 300 are best for most of the work: they are best on the road, and be fore the harrow, (not before the mower and reaper we think.) At cross plowing and harrowing a coach horse will do one-fourth more than a heavy draft horse. Be sides, it costs much more to keep the heavy horse, and on sandy, or wet soil,he sinks go much as to worry: blot. For all uses which the farmer has for horses, the medium sized or coach horses are the best. Sure Remedy for Catarrh.— A subscriber informs us that a sure remedy for calarrh.isjsak and water. Take half a teacup of blood warm water and dissolve sufficient salt in it so that it can he plainly tasted. Then pour it in die palrnoT the hand and snuff it into the nostrils. Two applications a day will soon produce good results. He has cured himself, and the remedy has been applied in some twenty instances in this town, with most gratifying results. Surely such a*. l dm pie remedy is worth tty ing" Age of tiie Cow. —The age of the cow is known by the teeth and horns. This animal is furnished with eight cutting teeth in the lower jaw; at the age of ten months the two middlemost of these fall out, and are replaced’by others that arc not so white, but broader; at the age of sixteen months the two next milk white teeth fall out likewise, and others come up in their room ; thus, at the end of every six months the creature loses and gains, till at the age of three years all the cutting teeth are renewed, and then they are long, pretty white, and equal; but in proportion as the animal ad vances in years, they become irreg ular and black, their inequalities be come smoother, and the animal less Capable of chewing its food. Thus the cow often declines from this sin gle cause ; for, as it is obliged to eat a great deal to support life, and as the smoothness of the teeth makes the difficulty of chewing great, a suf ficient quantity of food cannot be supplied to the stomach. Thus, the poor animal sinks in the midst of plenty, and every year grows leaner and leaner till it dies. The horns arc another and surer method of determining the animal’s age. At three years old, a very l slight external shell coaling fulls j off the places where the horti3 are - about arising. At four years of age the cow has small, pointed, r.cat, smooth horns, thickest near the head ; at five the horns become lar ger, and are marked around with the former year’s growth. Thus, while the animal continues to live, the horns continue to lengthen, and «vefy year anew ring is added to the root 1 ; so that, allowing three yeawdbefore their appearance, and then reckoning the number of rings, ''we have, in both together, the ant-1 mal’« age exactly. Two Ooblwneit, the Marquis de Valaise and the £o®U dc Meric, wefe educated under the samtf mas ters, ana were regarded by all who ! knew them as patterns of friendship, ! honor and sensibility. Years sue- feus? ; when, one unfortunate evening, the ■ two baying indulged rather I freely in some excellent burgundy, I repaired to ft neighboring hotel, and 1 engaged in a game of backgammon. ' Fortune declared herself in favor of | the Marquis; he won every game, and in thoughtless glee of the mo ! ment, laughed with exultation a| his unusual good lucji. The Count Ml his ifefhper, ana once or twice upbraided Marquis for enjoying the pain which he had excited in the bosom of his friend. At last, upon another fortu ; nate throw made by the Marquis, by which lie gammoned his antagonist, the infuriated Count, threw the box . and dice in the face of his brother I soldier. Every gentleman present was in amazement, and waited almost j breathlessly for the moment wlirn the Marquis would sheathe bis sword 'in the bosom of the now repentant j Count. “Gentlemen,” said the Marquis, “I am a Frenchman, a soldier and a friend. I have received a blow from a Frenchman, a so’dier and a friend. I know and acknowledge the laws of honor, and 1 will obey them. Eve ry man who sees me, wonders why 1 am tardy in visiting with venge ance the author of my disgrace. But, gentlemen, the heart of that man is entwined with my own ; our education was the same, our princi ples are alike, and our friendship I dates from our earliest years. But, Frenchmen, I will obey the laws of i honor and of France; 1 will stab him to the heart.” Upon this he threw his arms n round his.unhappy Irieinl, and said, “My dear De Meric, 1 forgive you, if you will forgive me for the irrita tion I have occasioned-in a sensible mind, by the levity of my own. And now, gentlemen,” added the Mar quis, “though 1 have interpreted the laws oj honor my own way, if there remains in this room one French man who dares lo doubt my resolu tion to reseat even an improper smile at me, my sword is by my side to punish an affront, but not to murder a friend, for whom I would die, and who sits there a monument of contri tion arid bravery, ready with me lo challenge the rest of the tooin to deadly combat it any man dare to think amiss of this transaction.” Puzzling a Doctor, Mr. M., an artny surgeon, was very fond ofajoke (unless perpetra ted at bis own expense,) and had, moreover a great contempt for citi zen officers, who were re-nowned more for their courage than their scholarship. One day, at mess, af ter the decanter had performed sun dry perambulations of the table, Captain S., a brave and accomplish ed officer, and a great wag, remarked to the doctor who had been somewhat severe in his remarks on the literary deficiencies of some of the new offi cers— “ Doctor M.,- are you acquainted [With Captain G !’’ “Yes, I know him well,’ 3 replied the doctor; “he is one of the new set. But what of him ?” “Nothing in paiticular. I have just received a letter from him, and I will wager you a dozen of old port that you cannot guess in six guesses, how he spell cat. 3 ’ “Done ! It’s a wager.” “Well, commence guessing,” said S. “K, a, double t.” “No.” “K, a, double t, e.” “No.” “K, a, t, e." “No! try again.” “C, a, double t, e.” “No, you have missed it again.” “Well, then,” returned the doctor, “C, a double f.” “No, that’s not the way; try again—it’s your last guess.” “C, a, g, 1), t.” “No, that’s not the way ; you’ve lost your wager,” said S. “Well,” said the doctor, with much petulance of manner, “how dees lie spell it ?” “Why, he spells it c, a, t,” repli ed S, with the utmost gravity of manner, amid the toar of the mess, anti almost choking with rage, the doctor sprang to his feet, exclaim ing— “ Captain S-, I am too old a man to be trifled with in this manner !” For a Bruise or Blow. —Apply hot water a long lime with wet cloths.
