There was a total of seventy
banks chartered in the State by
Secretary of State Phillip Cook

the national banks chartered

The fees paid to the State for

IIN HONUR OF MISS BACON.
On last Thursday everning, Dr. and
Mrs. C. E. W. Dobbs gave a reception
in honor of Miss Olivia Bacon and Mr.
J.J. Daniell, whose marriagd® takes
place on Feb. sth. The eolor scheme
was pink and green and the plage cards
were handpainted and very pretty. A
number of their young friends were
‘present to enjoy the splendid collation
80 nicely served.
Mrs. Ralph W. Northcutt gave a
twelve luncheon last Saturday in honor
of Miss Olivia Bacon, twelve young
ladies being present as guests. The
dining room was very attractively ar
ranged, center being banked with white
hyacinths. The coney center piece was
beautiful. The place cards were hand |
painted. After the delicous luncheon.‘
the; young ladies pulled streamers of
ribbon, thereby opening an umbrella
and a shower of handkerchiefs "covered
Miss Bacon. The occasion was delight
fully pleasant to all, and was another
evidence of the popularity of Miss Ba

ELECTRIC COOKING.
Eds Journal—Prcspective customers
no doubt hesitate to close a contract
for electric heating and cooking devi
ces because the exact cost of current
for various utensils is sometimes not
clearly stated. Helptul statements of
the local dollar and cente of operating
electric heating and cooking appliances
are given below: ¢
An electric tea-kettle costs to operate “
for 15 minutes two cents. The electric
heating pad, which takes the place of
the old style hotwater bottle, uaes}
about one cent’ts worth of current for
one hour’s srvice. An eleetric chaf
ing dish costs approximately 214 cents
to operate for 15 minutes, considerably
less than for aleohol, and all the bother
and danger Jelimnated. Electrie curl
ing irons can be used for 15 minutes
for three-tenths of one per cent. To
heat water at a moments notice day or
night, by means of the electri¢ hot-wa
ter heater, requires for 15 minutes use
one and quarter cents. A four-hole
electric waflle-iron for 15 minutes use,
2!g cents. With two electric stoves a
‘breakfast consisting of fruit, creamed
wheat, flakes, boiled eggs. creamed po
' tatoes, toast and French coffee may be
used for the cooking of chops, oysters,
fowl, toasting bread, for baking pota

; ROAD BONDS.
EpiTors JourNAL:—ln this issue is
found a call for an election for road
bonds. This isdone in accordance with
a recommendation of the grand jury
at the first week of the November term
of court,
In lieu of this, the second week's
grand jury recommended that the
commutation tax be raised from $2.50
te $l.OO, and the property tax be in
creased to a limit not exceeding 20c,
for road purposes.
These are the two plans proposed by
the grand juries, and I have called the
election in order that the people may
decide for themselves which plan they
want,
I wish to say in this communiecation
that if the bond issue prevails, I think
we ghould have county commissioners
to handle the funds, and I have no
doubt the coming session of the legis
lature will provide for the people to
elect commisgioners, as four successive
grand juries have recommended it.
In next week’s Journal I shall en
deavor to give some facts and figures
in connectior with the proposed bond
issue, that prove may of interest to
your readers just at this time,
Respectfully,
Jonx Awrriy.

There seems to be an awakened in
terest (an interest that has too long laid
dormant) aroused in this special work
in this and adjoining communities,
This is well, for there is no way that is
better than this to advance the social
and literary intereet of a rural comma
nity. A good literary society develops
the mind, strengthens the memory,
promotes congenialty, brightens a none
too attractive country hife, and pro
motes progress generally.
Anything that will check the ten
fdencv of the people of flocking to the
already over-crowded cities, is a help
to the individual, the community, and
the nation at large, in an intellectnal,
moral and material way. This is the
intent and purposes of Mt, Zion Liter
ary Society, which meets twice each
month, at 7:30 o’clock, on Saturday
evenings before the first and third Sun
days. Remember the time, and don’t
let a month with five Sundays mix you
up, but keep your eye on the Ist and
3rd Sundays. And let us all work to
gether in co-operavion and union, and
push the work to sueccessful consum
mation.
Yours for the work,
J. W. UxpERWOOD,
Pres. Mt. Zion Literary Society.
You ought to be glad that you
are not able tc own an automobile,
According to a writer in one of
the magazines, the cost of his ma
chine in repairs and maintenance
for seven months, during which
he traveled 10,000 miles, was
$397.50, or an average of $56.85 a
month. But maintenance and re
pairs did not represent ail the ex
pense. He estimates the other
expense on his $l,BOO machive as
follows: $5O for a year’s liabilify
insurance, $825 for depreciation
in the value of the car, and $45.50i
interest at 6 per cent. on the st
cost, making, with the cost ofl
maintenance, a total of $317.50.
That seems to be ‘a rather largs
bill of costs, and may exceed that
of the average automobile. Be
rides, there is the compensation
account to be brought into the
balance. For instance, if he had
paid 3 cents a mile on a railroad
to ride the 10,000 miles, the cost
would have been $3OO.
