GOING THE PACE.
The troubles of one Fred E.
Peters, the young man who was
gent to jail in Chattanooga a few
days age on a charge of uttering
bogus paper, are used by the Nash
ville Americau as a pretext for a
very wholesome sermon. Peters
merely lived beyond his means, a
thing that hundreds of young men,
and older ones, too, are doing.
He rented automobiles, piayed go
ciety some, and finally worked
himself into trouble. The Ameri
can says.
““What a fool Peters was, to be
sure. But, alas, how many other
young men—llote of older ones,
too—are traveling the road which
leads to one of two things—the
prison or poverty. Nashville, like
Chattanocga and every other city,
has its share. They live beyond
their means. Theysquander where
they should save. We’ve heard of
men, and women, too, in thistown
who have mortgaged their homes
i order to eecure autcmobiles,
These reports may not be true, but
we are inclined to believe them
true, &
How much better it would be,
how much more satisfactory, how
easier on the conscience and the'
mind if every man and woman
eadeavored to put aside their van
ity and false pride and lived their
true selves.
Good society, the meeting and
‘mingling with people of culture
and good breeding, is a benefitjand
a pleagure to all, but even the de
sire for these should not lead men
and women to go beyond their
means, for society has little pa
tience with the pauper, and liviug
beyond one’s means is bhound to
bring poverty or disgrace in the
end.”’
What is believed to be the rich
est gold deposit in the world is re
ported to have been struck at
Leadville a few days ago. Several
sacks of ore were taken out that it
was expected woald yield $lOO to
the pound or $200,000 to the ton.
The vein is said to be quite large,
and the owners of it are calculat
ing to get ouv not less than $50,000
inside of a week. Such rapid
money making must cause even
Mr. Harriman to pause and scratch
his head.
m————l et o i,
Wm. D. Haywood was acquitted
in Boise, Idaho, for the murder of
former Governor Steunenburg.
ISCREASING COST OF LIVING.
The Bureau of Labor at Wash
ington has just lesued a statement
showing the increased cost of liv
ing the past two years. Every
housekeeper in the ccuntry has
knowu for some time that the cost
of living was gradually climbing,
fbut the Bureau of Labo~ has fur
‘nished statistical informatiop on
the subject. The Bureau’s sta
tistics relaie to wholesale prices.
Retail prices are now beiog tabu
lated and compared. The increase
in cost of 258 commodities 1n 1906
over 1005 was more than 53 per
cent, and compared with 1907
the rise amcunts to 364 per cent—
considerably more thau one-third.
The commodities include food,
clothing, implements and utensils
and building material, :
