COL. W. R. POWER.
Col. W. R. Power spoke to the pa
trons and pupils of the MeAfee school.
He made a very interesting and in
spiring talk on the importance of edu
eation, and told the need of it in order
that the children may be fitted to make
useful and progressive citizers.
Then he explained a method by which |
the present school system could be im
proved with little effort on the part of“
the citizens, and thus a wonderful ad- ;
vancement in education would follow
in the rural districts. The patrons of the 1
school seem to be heartily in favor of the
method Col. Power advocated for the
promotion of education, and some ex
pressed themselves as being confident
of better schools.
It is hoped that the people will con
sider this question of education.

BIG 00D FELLOWS
From two to three thousand
people gathered in the Awtrey
grove Wednesday, in honor of the
day of celebration set apart by the
local lodge of Odd Fellows. Ex-
Gov W.J Northen introduced the
speakers in an eloquent and most
graceful mauner. The first mem
ber on the program was the wel
come sddress by Mr L M Awtrey,
of the local lodge. Gov Northen
next mtroduced Senator A S Clay.
A grander and more eloquent
speech was perhaps never heard in
Acworth. The Senator’s master
ful discourse covered kriefly all the
important national questions as
well as those of church and state,
and, it too, was a great Odd Fel
low speech. Next came the crown
ing speech on. Odd Fellowship by
the distinguished Odd Fellow,
Hon Alex Dittler, of Atlanta,
Past Grand Master of the State,
Mr Dittler’'s discourse was on
Friendship, Love and Truth, the
fundamental principles of the Or
der. His address was masterful
and highly enjoyed The excel
lent Cartersville band diseoursed
beautiful selections throughout
program, and the management is
highly pleased with their services.
A great dinner was spread at the
noon hour. Two long tables un
der the beautiful shade trees were
laden to their utmost with the
‘““eream of the pantry”’ and the
,yroducts of an abundant harvest.
In the afterneon Mr B Suttles de
!livered a splendid addrees on Odd
Fellowship. M: Suttles is one of
the leading fraternal order men
of the State. Recitations by Miss
Marie Reynolds and Mr Herbert
Williams were highly enjoyed and
encored repeatedly, The crowd
reluctantly dispersed late in the
afternoou, many attending the
Marietta-Acworth ball game where
two bands furnished music.—Ac

A TRIP NORTH. i
Eprrors Marierra JouaNAn.—lt may
interest some of your readers to review
a brief account of my trip up North,
East and West. On the 14th of July
last, I took a Pullman train at Atlanta,
for Philadelphia, Pa. This train of 12
Pullman cars started from New Orleans
for Philadelphia and New York loaded
with Elks for the great herd gathering
at Philadelphia. When we reached
Philadelphia the city was over-run with
Elks, some 250,000 strong. Deliver me
from any city with such a herd in it.
Some of them were not very tame.
Went to New York the next day ; did
not stop long; took Hudson River train,
west side, for Albany, N. Y., then on to
Saratoga, a famous summer resort and
a great place for all sorts of conven
tions,
We pulled into Whitehall, N. Y., at
7:10 p. m,, July 18th, my native place,
situated at the head of Lake Cham
plain.
On July 25th, went on an excurgion
down the Lake to Ticonderago, then
over to Lake George ; took the Steamer
Sagamore through the lake and feasted
my eyes on the most charmiog scenery
of lake, islands and mountains any
where to be found in 8o small a space.
The lake is about 40 miles long and
from one-half mile to four in width
The Indian name was Horicon. The
French called it Lake Sacrament, and
used it for baptizing. The English, af
ter taking it from the French, called it
Lake George—a most ridiculous name
for the most baautiful lpke in all the
world. Lakes are feminine. They bear
on their heaving bosoms the boats of
trafic and of pleasure. Therefore, they
should have feminine names, full of
L beauty and charm. I shall have to leave
a fuller description of Lake George for
another time. I have some photo cards
of Lake George that my friends can see
when they wish., We returned from
Lake George by way of Glenn Falls,
Sandy Hill and Fort Edward—a most
enjoyable trip for $1.50.
On the 12th inst., I went to Cleve
land, Ohio, by way of Albany and Buf.
falo, on the New York Central and Lake
Shore railroad. Cleveland is a city of
' 475,000, and growing rapidly. Left
Cleveland on the 20th inst. and arrived
in Marietta on the 2lst, very glad to
reach my Southern home in safety.
