THE SHOEMAKER SAINTS.
Btory of the Roman Brothers Who
Perished by the Sword.
St. Crispin and his brother, Cris
pinian (always associated together
in the calendar), were two natives
of Rome who, having become con
verts to Christiawty, set out for
Gaul to preach the faith about the
middle of the third century along
with St. Quintin and others. 'The
brothers settled at Soissons, where,
n imitation of the upostle Paul,
they preached publicly in the day
time and worked with their hands
at might, carning their own sub
gistence by making shoes, though
nobly born. They supplied the poor
at a low price, and a legend tells us
that an angel supplied them with
leather. The heathen listened to
their instructions and were aston
ished at the charity, disinterested
ness, piety and contempt of glory
displayed in their lives, and many
were converted to the Christian
faith.
After they had been thus-engaged
for several yealrs the l':m.:n'!'tn' Max
imianus Herculius came mto Belgie
Gaul, and a complaint was made to
him against the brothers, Ile, de
siring to gratify their accusers as
well as to indulge his own :avage
cruelty, gave orders that they
ghould he M‘Ullgll! hefore Rictius
Varus, the most implacable enemy
of the Christians of that time. The
saints bore with patience and con
stancy the most eruel torments and
at length finished their course by
being beheaded with the sword
about 287 A. D.
Aceording to a Kentish tradition,
their remains, being cast into the
sea, were washed ashore at Romnb
marsh. In the sixth centurv a
great church was built in their hon
or at Noigsons, and St. Eligiug richly
ornamented the shrine.
From their martvrdom to the
prescnt time they have been re
garded as the patron saints of shoe
makers, who were accustomed to
honor theirvday (and are vet in
some towns) by great festivity. One
special ceremony was a procession
of the brethren of the eraft with
banners aud luusic, while various
characters representing King Cris
pin and his court were sustained by
different members.—Bt. James’ Ga

The Cat Has Been an Important Per
sonage In Many Nations. :
Miss Pussy. not only boasts an
ancient hisbery, Lut as far back as
history goes she has been quite an
important personage. The gvp
tians reverenced cats. 'They had a
hospital for sick kittens, and such
as giéd were embalmed and buried
with mueh ceremony. Mourning
was also worn by the family to
whom the beloved kitten belonged.
This mourning was not black
clothes, but shaved evebrows,
Though the Egvptians do not do
quite so much in these dayy they
still think a great deal of cats.
They have a high officer called fa
ther of cats, and near Cairo is a
lbuilding where every day a feast is
'sprend, to which are invited all the
cats of the city. No doubt you
‘have heard the storv of Cambyses
coming to fight the Egyptians and
‘taking advantage of their reverence
for cats by fastening before every
soldier’s breast a live cat. Of course
the Egyptians dared not hurt these
cats, and so they were conquered.
The Chinese are likewise fond of
cats, but, sad to say for the cats, it
18 in sfew.
In Rome and also in London the
owners of cats pay a man a certain
sum of money wonthly, and every
day he walks through the streets
uttering a pecaliar cry. All cats
know him and come from all direc
tions to get their dinner. He is
called “the cats’ meat man.” Cats
have always been highly valued in
Wales. Tiey are kept about grana
ries to catch rats. In the old days
anybody stealing oné of these cats
had to give for her a sheep or a
lamb. Should the cat chance to be
killed she was hung up by the tail
until her head touched the floor
and wheat poured over her until the
tip of her tail was covered. All this
wheat the thief had to give to the
cat’s owner.
The United States government
keeps more than 300 cats in the
postoftice department to guard the
mails from rats and mice. Before
these cats were employed valuable
letters were often destroyed. These
pussies are well fed, $4O a vear be
ing allowed for each cat’s meat.
The Japancse frighten away their
mice and rats with china ecats.
These are made so lifelike that
when a candle is placed tnside lhn‘
figures the mice imagine them to be
real cats and run for their lives,— |
