The object of this editorial col
umn is not to give any extended
historical account of the past of
Marietta, but rather to call atten
tion to the city as it is today; and
if one-half of the writing that has
veen done in the past bad set forth
the advantages of Marietta as'a
favorable site for manufacturing
enterprises of all kinde, instead of
givitg fulsome praise to iudividu
als, che might today be one of the
largest and most important indus
trial centres in the State, if not in
the South, and every foot of what
‘ is now vacaut land be occupied by
‘some large plant or factory. As
it is, the city stands forth as a
leader in almost every line of hu
man endeavor, as a glance at this
'page will show, and, it may be
truthfully said, that in all the ele
l ments of progressiveness and
achlevement Marietta holds 4 first
lplace among the fuvored cities of
the Siage, .
. Marietta possesses an abundant
}supply of water for both mechan
ical and domestic purposes, as also
for fire protection, and few cities
in the South surpass it for nat
‘ural drainage or provision for
quick removal of sewerage. With

| with markets filled to repletion
iwith the best and purest food pro
‘ducts of the earth: with model
’dwelling houses and wide streets,
iMarietta is cne of the healthful
