Mr. S. E. Henderson and fam
y, of Norfolk, Va., artived last
WWeek to spend awhile with his pa
rents, Mr. and Mrs, D. B. Hen
derson, and are now shaking hands
_with his many friends. It has
been three years since we have had
the pleasure of seeing our son.
The farmers began to do some
farm work last week—such as
planting vegetables.
From the way some people spend
their money, they must have more
money than brains.
The farmers had better go slow
and not plant so many sweet pota
toes this year, unless they want to
take about 25 or 20 cente a hushel
for them next fall. I understand
that the canning factory is not go
ing to run this year, and all of the
potatoes will be thrown on the
market elsewhere. Plant corn;
that brings a good price.

“Johnny,” said a teacher to a
grocery man’s six-year-old, “a lie
can be acted as well as told. Now,
if your father would put sand in his
sugar and sell it he would be acting
a lie and doing very wrong.”
“That’s what mother told him,”
said Johnny impetuously, “and he
said he didn’t care.” :
Tennyson’s Humility. .
The poet Tennyson was gifted
with the grace of humility. His let
ters disclose his dissatisfaction with
himself and his achievements. He
itched his ideals high, and he
Enew, none more clealfiy, when he
failed to grasp what he had reached
after. An anecdote contributed by
the Duke of Argyll and quoted by
Miss Cary in her volume, “Tenny
son,” exhibits the poet’s humility.
“The first words I heard him ut
ter,” says the duke, “remain indeli
bly impressed upon my memory. On
being introduced to him at an even
ing party in the house of Lord John
Russell I said, perhaps with some
emotion:
“‘I am so glad to know you!
“Not in the tone or voice of a
mere conventional reply, but in the
accents of sincere humility, he an
swered :
““You won’t find much in me,
after all.””
Following the Cat.
“I can write,” said a little girl
aged five to her aunt when she
came in from school one day. “I’m
delighted to hear it,” replied the
aunt. “And what can you write?”
“I can write cat and mat and bat,”
said the child. The aunt gave her
paper and pencil. “Write cat here
for me,” she said, “and let me see.”
The child wrote the word fairly, but
put the letter C with its back to the
A. “That is very good,” said auntie,
“only look, dear, you have made the
C the wrong way.” The child gazed
at the word for a moment. “But
the cat was going that way!” she
exclaimed.
French and English Tastes.
How far does the great “healthy
British public” like to see exhibi
tions of the horrible? Certainly not
like the French, for, although Paris
has abolished the publicity of the
morgue, a French company like the
Grand Guignol can go on year after
year, and French newspapers will
publish pictures of the corpses and
all that sort of thing as English
newspapers would not dare to do.
To call it “morbid” is begging the
question. It is simply different from
ourselves.—London Tatler.
Bargains In Heathen Deities.
There is an old curiosity shop in
London which makes a specialty of
heathen deities. - All kinds of im
ages, small and large, handsome,
hideous and grotesque, are on view.
You can choose an antique Aztec
god from Mexico, carved in heavy
stone and hideous enough to scare
a burglar; you can purchase a mar
ble deity from 3andalay, a wooden
atrocity from the Ju Ju land of
west Africa or a gilt joss from the.
Chinese temple.
The best way to cultivate an ap

It often happens that, atter put

over it.
You can not always gauge the
importance of a man by the angle
at which he wears his hat.
