Weary of the gay whirl of soci
ety and face to face, as she beliey
ed, with years of physical suffer
ing, leaving a dinner party, a scene
of social splendor and gayety, Mrs,
Pierre Lorillard, Jr., aged forty
three, wife of the tobacco king,
woent to her home, entered the
bath-room in her apartments,
tarned on the gas and died of as
phyxiation at Washington Thure
day night. .
To make wser less terrible was
the purpose of the international
convention recently held in Lon
don, at which an agreement gov
erning naval war was adopted,
Meanwhile, all the time the in
ventors of guns and bombe and
torpedoes are working to make war
80 much more terrible that it will
become impossible! Thus we see
one set of peacemakers working 1
just the opposite direction to that
followed by another set of peace
makers.
Further caving of the Gatun
dam 18 reported. A very serious
cave occurred during the past week,
although efforts are made to mini
mize its effects. However, it 1s
estimated that three huudred feet
of the dam, along the re-located
Panama railroad, settled about
thirty feet. This is certainly a big
cave. But the greatest significarnce
doesn’t lie in the magnitude of the
cave, but in the fact that it occur
red on the same place where the
dam sank last Novembher.
A lawyer once asked a man who
had at various times sat on juries:
““Who influenced you most—the
lawyers, the witnesses or the
judges?”’ He expected to get some
useful and interesting information
from such an experienced juryman.
The man replied:
“I tell yoa, sir, 'ow I make up
my mind. I'm er plain man and
a reasonin’ man, and I ain’t influ
enced by nothin’ the lawyer says,
no—nor by what the judge says.
I just look at the man 1n the dock,
and I says, ‘lf he ai’t done noth
in’ why is he thar?’ and 1 hring
them all in guilty.””
Once on a time, and not so very
long ago at that, the Northern
newspapers were in the habit of
commenting ou the concealed pis
tol toting practice with bitter sar
casm and invective, and referring
to it as a peculiarly Southeru cus
tom. Now we find New York and
Penusylvania newspapers, among
them the New York Tribune,
writing seriously against the con
cealed pistol in their own commu
nities, ‘“‘Halting enfcrcement of
the law against carrying coucealed
weapowv= is responsible for a great
deal of crime,’’ says the Tribune
very truly. We are pleased tc see
our Northern centemporaries re
coguize this as a nationa! and not
a sectional vice, and to welcome
their assistance in the effort to
stamp it out.

FIR CONGRESS,
Judge Moses Wright, of the Rome
Judicial Circuit, states that he will be
in the next race as a candidate for Con
gress from the seventh district. He
says he will regign the judgeship before
he makesg his formal announcement.
In ao interview in the Rome Tribune,
he said :
*““The romors circulated at times to
‘the effect that I will not be in the race
for Congress ; that 1 would accept some
other poegition, and so forth, are abso
lutely without foundation. I have said
nothing for the reason that the nomi
nation for Congress is some eighteen
months from now. My friends may re
ly, however, with absolute certainty
upon the fact that, at the proper time,
I shall make my announcement and
make an active canvass for the nomina
tion. Even before the voluntary re
tirement of Hen. Gordon Lee from the
eoming congressional contest, it has
been my fixed determination to enter
the race for Congress.”’

' A COMPLIMENT TO CLAY.
The creation by the senate of a
committee on expenditures is a
compliment to Senator Clay, of
' Georgia, who has frequently advo
cated such a committee on the
floor of the senate. Indeed, Mr.
Clay made a strong argument in
favor of a commission to inquire
into the expenditures of the gov
ernment on the very last day of
the sixtieth congress—March 4th.
It was then that he called atten
tion to the epormoas growth of the
expenditures, and declared that
the senate should take steps to
pruce down the expenditures of
the government.
The new committee will be
known as the committee on ex
penditures, or budget, and it will
be its duty to inquire into all of
the estimates submitted by the
various departments and bureaus.
It 15 believed the expenditures will,
in this way, be considerably cur
tailed.—Ralph Smith, Washington
Correspondent Atlanta Journal.
