Washington, D. C., April 22.—
There is no longer any necessity
of poliuting American cities with
volumes of smoke, and that
smoke cosumers can be obtained at
reasonable prices and operated
with economy, are the assertions
of the technological branch of the
Geological Survey. The experts
assert. that in their experiment
station at Pittsburg they are suc
cessfully eperating a smokeless
plant, ad making steam econom
ically witk a coal heretofore re
garded as refuse and delivered at
the station for 88 cents a ton
They declare further that they
have found similar conditions in a
number of mercantile establish
ments, and that the belief that
smokeless plants cannot be opera
ted on & commercial basis, is with
out foundation. The experts say
that bituminous coals high in vol
atile matter can be burned with
out smoke; that large plants can
be operated without smoke, and
that by the use proper appliances,
great pecuniary saving can be ef
fected. They indorse only one
kind of apparatus, and that in
volves a mechanical stoker. In
conclueion, the experts insist that
the diacouragement of many oper
ators who have sought to operate
their plants without making
smoke, ia due to the employment
of :nefficient ampliances.
After June Ist, before anyone
can marry in the state of Wash
ington, they will have to shew by
physican’s certificate that they
are mentally and physically fit to
marry.

Washington state has an anti
tipping law that will go intoeffect
on June 11th. It prohibits the
giving of gratuities to employes of
public heutes or public service
corporations, and the man who
