TrURsDAY MorNING, May 6, 1909,

Within thirteen years every Ja
panese city of importance has es
tablished an electric sireet car
line.
The rebuilding of New York
City’s Catskill water system will
require 58,000,000 cubic yards of
excavation, 28,000,000 million
more than the Panama canal.
The lowest point of dry land iv
the United States is in Death Val
ley, Cal., 278 feet below sea level ;
the highest, Mt. Whitney, Cal.,
14,501 feet.
More than 170 tons of human
hair, most of from China, are aun
nually imported into France,
where it is made up for use in all
parts of the world.

Young men who play the vari
ous gambling devices have often
wondered why they had such a
streak of bad luck. This has been
answered by officiale of Atlantic
City who hava captored a slot ma
chine which had within it printed
directions for so setting it that pa
trons could never win. But so
long as the boye got the thrill of
thinking the machine might stop
on & winning number, the money
was not aitogether spent without
recompense, was perhaps the view
the gamblers took of it.
And now we have the telemegra
phone. The ipstrument is one
that magnifies and spreads the
sounds that come over a telephone
wire. Theapparatus was tested in
Pittsburg the other day, before 100
insurance agents at an annual
meeting. Paul Morton, sitting at
his desk in the Equitable building
in New York, 444 miles away,
spoke into an ordinary telephone
transmitter, and his voice was
heard distinctly by every one in
the room at Pittsburg, every word
being as clear as if from a high
grade phonograph.
Engineer Van Wageneu, who
says the lock and dam style of
canal at Panama will prove a dis
mal aud disastrous failure, is said
to be in the employ of certaiu con
gressmen and others who are inter
ested 1n having a sea-level canal
constructed. Which, once again,
illustratee the fact that expert tes
timony can be procured on auy
side of any queation by anybody
who 18 willing to pay forit. Emi
nent engineers have declared that
the Gatun dam will prove as en
during as the hille and that the
lock canal will do the business,
and President Taft has indorsed
their conclusions. Meanwhile
other eminent engineesrs, includ
ing Buneau-Varilla and Van Wage
nen, ewear by the great horn epoon
that nothing but failure can fol
low the building of a lock canal:

TURKISH REYOLUTION.
It isn’t known yet how many
lives were lost in the fighting in
land about Constantinople. The
fighting was pretty severe batween
the troops which remained loyal
to the sultan and these who were
back of the young Turk party. It
is estimated that between six and
seven thcusand were killed. In
the disorders in Armenis, it is es
timated that between twenty and
thirty thousand were massacred,
the disorders being connected with
the situation in Constantincple.
Mehmed Reschad Effendi, who
has been proclaimed sultan, and
who is a brother of the deposed
sultan, is described as & man of
‘education and considerable abili
ty, though he has had very littlei
experience in public affairs, He
has been a prisoner in his palace‘
pear Constantinople for many
years, the sultan fearing that he
would endeavor to have himself
made sultan. Since, under the
constitution, he will have very lit
tle authority, will in fact be a
mere figure head, it isn’t a matter
of a great deal of consequence
whether he is experienced in pub
lic affairs or not. If he remaine
quiet, and attends to the practi
cally unimportant dutiee which
the constitution Imposes on him,
he will answer every purpose ex
pected of him,

was not discovered until the votes

Seven hundred Barbadoes, ne
groes, were carried to Panama last
week to work on the canal. ‘Lhe
ship that carried them over, teok
away upwards of 400 white labor
ers—Spaniards and Italiane—who
are going to Brazil to engage in
railroad building and later to set
tle and bhecome farmers in that
country. The exchange of these
two bunches of laborers is regarded
as a lose to the canal, since it is
said the white men are far better
and more tractable workers than
the blacks. Brazil is offering
millions of acres of high-grade ag
ricultural land for settlement on
the very easiest terms, with prac
tically no restricticns as to immi
gration. :

FARMERS BUYING AUTOS.

owned by farmers and 255 owned
by business men and others. One
little Kensas town recently receiv
ed two solid train loads of autos
and mcre than half of them had
beeu sold to farmers by agents be
fore they were uunloaded. A few
years ago the Kansas farmers were
heralded by the press as owning
more buggies and surreys than any
set of agricnlturists on eaath, and
now that the auto has ceme to
