TEUREDAY MorNING, Ava. 12, 1909,
It takes more than one thief to
organize a steal trust.
Once in awhile a man is tno
proud to beg and too honest to
steal. Then the only alternative
he has left is to go to work.
State Entomologiet E. L. Wor
sham estimates that fully one mil
lion dollars of damage will be done
the cotton crop in Georgia by the
‘‘pblack root’’ trouble.
The grand jury of Haralson su
perior court last week raised the
taxes of citizens in that county
about $825,000 over the returns as
fourd on the tax receiver’s books.
A new German airship has a
boat attachment, and the boat is
provided with engine and water
propeller. Now if they will just
provide an automobile attach
ment, the craft will be ready for
air, sea or land.
A men from the West was in
New York the other day trying to
gell a gold brick. But he couldn’t
find a purchaser, for the reason
that the brick was real gold and
was worth every penny he asked
for ié. If it had been the other
kind of gold brick he could easily
have found a purchaser.
The state of Georgia faces the
proposition, that it 18 necessary to
provide at least $200,000 per &an
num additionsal to take care of the
Confederate pension roll in this
state. Thie comes about through
the passage of the Foster amend
ment to the state constitution, au
thorizing the payment of a service
pension.
In numerous localities 1n Ne
braska during the last swo weeks
women in the harveet fields have
been quite a 8 common as men.,
They have done their work well,
and farmers who have given them
employment have been satisfied,
and to them have given creden
tiale that are exceedingly flatter
ing—s 3 per day.
Uncle Sam’s pocketbook suffered
a big shrinkage because of the pro
hibition wave during the fiscal
year ending Jaly 80th last, during
which period there was a decrease
of $5,290,778 in whiskey tax re
ceipts, as shown by the prelim
wary report of the internal reve
nue bureau juet iesned by Acting
Commiseioner Robt. Williame, Jr.
According to the tax digest, it
takes a lese amount of tools to
make & crop in this county than
any osher county on the face of
the earth. Nearly one-third of
the farmers return their farmiag
implements st one dollar. Now
what do you think about a fellow
making & crop with toole only
costing one dollar?—Dahlonega
Nugget.
Last year $56,000,000 was spent
by the railroads of the United
States for croes ties. The average
price of the ties was 50 cents each.
Only six per cent. of the ties were
used by electric railroads. Forty
three per cent. of the ties were of
osk, and nineteen per cent. of yel
low pine. Owing to the growing
scarcity of suitable timber, cther
woods are being used after treat
ment with various preservatives,
and it has been found that these
treated wooda outlast the more ex
peneive untreated oak ties.
LYING.
“Do I believe Ananias and Sapphira
were realiy struck dead for lying?”’ Oh,
yes, I surely do. It is not an uncom
mon method of suicide to thisday. I
know men who have killed themselves
simply by lying. Killed their credit at
bank and store so dead it would take
years to resurrect it, and then they’d
have to go to a new town, where no one
knew them, to accomplish the miracle.
Killed their standing in the commu
nity; killed the value of their tesui
mony even under oath; killed their
commonplace statements about the
most commonplace facts; killed their
reputation for veracity under any cir
cumstances. And when that is done,
the man takes up his abode among the
dead. The ‘‘town liar’’ stands for ab
solutely nothing in the community. An
established and recognized habit of
lying kills all of a man’s good qualities.
Kills them by poison. As dry rot eats
the heart out of a great, strong-looking
oak timber. And the saddest thing
about it is, the man doesn’t know he's
dead for so long after the neighbors
have buried him.
The dear, sweet, white Truth! What
& tower of strength and a stronghoid of
comfort a truthful man or woman is to
a community—one whom you can ab
solutely trust, always, under all cir
cumstances! When the time comes
that we can absolutely trust each other,
with no fear of evasion, trickery, or
double meaning, we shaill know that the
millenium has been here for several
years.—Robert J. Burdette, D. D, in
Sunday School Times.
GEORGIA LANDS.
The cheap lands are here in
Georgia, and in addition a coun
try already settled, producing
more wealth than any other sec
tion, and requirirg none of the
hardships incidental to new coun
tries. And besides this the climate
is such that it is not only heslth
ful and pleasant, but makes living
cheap and allows the growing of
continuous crops the entire year.
Under such conditions it cannot
be otherwise than that an indus
trious man, carefully husbanding
his resources and making the best
possible use of them, make rapid
headway in accumulating wealth
Taking & man without means
whatever he can easily secure work
at good wages. With the saving
of these wages for one or at most
two years he can operate u rented
farm, and after that it is only a
question of choice with him when
he ehall become his own landlord.
There are numerous instances here
of men making a net profit on one
year’s crops sufficiently large to
pay for the farm on which they
were made; and what one man has
done another can also do if he ap
plies the same industry and intel
ligent planning.—Augusta Herald.
THE PRODIGAL’S RETURN.
A husband and wife ran a freak
show in & certain provincial town,
but unfortunately they quarreled,
and the exhibits were equally di
vided between them, says Pear
gon’s. The wife decided to con
tinue business as an exhibitor at
the old address, but the husband
went on a tour.
After some years’ wandering the
prodigal returned, and a raconcili
ation took place, as the result of
which they became business part
ners once more.
A few mornings afterwards the
people of the neighborhood were
sent into fits of laughter on read
ing the following notice in the pa
pers:
~ “‘By the return of my husband,
‘my stock of freaks has been per
l manently increased!’’

| OLDEST GOOSE, AGE 36.
~ Flint, Mich., Augnst 6.—This
isn’t the goose that laid the golden
egg, but it’s the oldest goose in the
United States, according to its
owner, Mrs, A. C. Johnson, of this
city.
“The goose is 30 years old and
more,”’ says Mrs. Johnson, in re
lating the story of her feathered
pet. ‘‘One moruing in April, 1873,
when I went out in the yard, I
found a young gosling half buried
in the snow. KEvidently the bird
was one of a flock of wild geese fly
ing overhead, and during the night
had become tired and worn out,
dropping to the ground. I picked
him up, took him into the house,
fed him, and ever since then he
hasremained with me. Igave him
the name of Baby.”’
The old goose 18 known to every
child in the neighborhood. He
will follow his mistress about the
streets whenever she will allow him
to do 80, and is a pet of many peo
ple.

A RIGHTLY KEPT SABBATH.
A Sabbath well kept is worth
more to man than any invention
or discovery man ever made. And
the better it is kept the more it is
worth. A rightly kept Sabbath is
more than the unconscious ma
chinery that mar invents. And
the better man can make still
grander discoveries. A so-called
Sabbath that does not make man
hood better 18 not a Sabbath, but
a holiday. A Sabbath desecrated
by rowdyism and pleasure seeking,
or the siavery of servile work, is a
curse and not a blessing; it is not
God’s invention. The working
man needs reet, soul improvement,
not debauchery and degradation.
