After the nation has adopted the
noiseless Fourth of July, some of us
hope the reformers will wage a war
ageinst the restless vacation. ;
It all depends on the point of view,
‘The fly has & thousand eyes, scientists
tell us, and yet he can’t see why human
beings should be so determined to ex
e rminate him.
It is eaid a large number of the in
mates af the insane asylum at Milledge
ville have died of pellagra, but at that
time the disease wasn’t called by that
mame, it being incurable,
The remains of Capt. J. B. Travis
Seawell, who died in Atlanta on last
Saturday, were brought to Marietta
Monday morning and interred in the
ity cemetery. He was abrother-in-law
of Miss Nannie Lacy, of this place.
Dr. W. H, Bishop, of Marietta, has
quit the practice of medicine and gone

locating in Atlanta, after spanding a

The revival mestings aunounced to
begin at the Marietta Camp Ground on
the first Bunday in Beptember will be
gin on the fourth Bunday 1n August in
stead. Professor O, L. Button will di
reet the music during the entire two
weeks. A cheir of fi‘ty or more voices
will be supported by s piano and organ,
and songs of Zion will fill the spacious
arbor with mélody. Everybody invited
m. W. A. Wells will do the preaching,
will be assisted, from time to time,
by Christian workers from 3t, Paul's
Methodist church of Atlants. Marietta
people will take a hand in these meet
ings. A great many will use the tente

THE OPTIMIST.
The optimist, while he sees much
wof the evil, sees also much of the
good. He sees more of the beauty,
hears more of the music; his men
%al vision is keener, his spiritual
wneight deeper, His whole view of
life 18 one of promise.
When the problems, vexations,
and temptations come, he stands
equarely in his path, and by "atti
tude and expression declares his
firm belief in that ultimate good
He has many experiences, and
sometimes he fails; but he rises
«atronger in resolution for having
-discovered s weakness.
There i 8 in him something that
never yields, He 'ooks upon evil
a 8 sometking to be overcome., He
makes effort, and in proportion to
thie does he elevate himself to a
higher plane of life. He hasa
mssion in the world, apd proceeds
to-do his work. This is usually
done without demonstration. His
force 18 like the sublime forces of
the universe—sileut, but always
acting.
Like the pessimist, hia life and
thoughts are contagious; unlike
the pessimist, he is always wel
come,
If the two come face to face, he
will never yield to the latter’s in
fluence. He knows that eternal
%ruth and goodaess are working
through him, and he believes in
their ultimate triumph.—Dallas

PENSIONS. 1
Pexsiox OFFICE, 1
ATLANTA, GA., Aug. 12, 1909,
Judge J. M. Gann—Dear Sir:—
The biil that passed the House of
Regrasentstivu by a vote of 129
to 7to put in force the new Con
stitutional amendment that pro
vides & pension for all Confeder
ate soldiers, and the widows of
Confederate soldiers married prior
to the Ist of Jandary, 1870, not
worth over fifteen hundred dollars,
was at & late hour on Tuesday
night tabled in the appropriation
committee of the Senate, thereby
refusing to report the bill back to
the Senate that it might be read
the second time and go to the cal
endar for ite passage on the last
day of the session. This action of
the committee carries the bill over
as unfinished business to the ses
sion of 1910. lam sure the bill
would have passed in the Senate
had it come to a vote.
Therefore, no change has been
made that affects the present pen
sion laws. You can use the blanks
a 8 heretofore, and if you have
none, order you & supply ut once,
that all who desire to apply for a
pension under the preseut law may
make and file their applications in
this office before October 18t next.
Yours respectfully,
J. W. LINDSEY,
Commissioner of Pensions.
