The campai^

Our authorities begin to open
to the necessity of holding that rk-
which rolls through a region not secon
to the “blue grass” counties of Kentucky, ^
and extends from the hills of Warrer,
Coffee and Grundy to the flats of the * ';
Harpeth and Tennessee. It is truly a ! ,
land flowing with wine, milk and honey,
and illustrates the conceit of Douglas
Jerrold, as “to laugh a harvest it has but
lo be tickled with a hoe.” V
The main body of our army occupies the .
melancbolly little depot station of J ulla-
lioina. It forms the junction of the Chat-,
tanooga and McMinville Railroads, about
thirty-eight miles southeast from Murfrees
boro. At the latter point General Breck
inridge has a division, well posted and
fortified.
Forrest and Morgan operate around
Nashville. 'I hey make Lavergne a place
of rendezvous, whence they sally forth
like Marion’s men of old, at the peep ot
day, dealing death and destruction to the
out posts, foraging'parties and subsistence
trains of the enemy. These excursions
are generally attended by artillery,'- oi
which both the brigades of Morgan and
Forrest have abundance. Composed ot
dashing veterans, and lead by chieftains ;
w ho have never been surpassed for skill
and daring, the cavalry branch of the
army of the West may challenge com
parison with any atm of the service.
As yet the operations of the opening
campaign are merely in course of prepara
tion, so to say. We are oiganizing a force
to meet the advance of Kosenerans.—
Schools of instruction have been oi gam-
zed ; new recruits enlisted ; subsistence
procmed, and a clear field opened for a
free light.
It is gratifying to know that the line of
mail communication is to keep open. We
learn from Col. Cole, that hereafter a
regular agent twill attend to the postal
arrangements of this department, and that
the people of Middle Tennessee are not’to
be wholly neglected by that miserable
humbug, the Post Master General at
Richmond,
For six, nay, nearly ten long months,
these people have been kept in the dark.
They have seen nothing, have heard noth
ing hut one foul tissue of falsehood. The
whole country has been flooded with Yan
kee fabrications of the most absurd qual
ity. They know- nothing of what has
been transpiring in the (South. Surely,
now that we have a free access we should
disseminate a ray of light and truth. It is
a duty which the Confederate States owe
to a victimized, but a true and loyal peo
ple.
Parties just from below report that the
Abolitionists grow more impudent, and
that the operations of Morgan and Forrest
are conducted upon a system ot greater
prudence.
Gov. Harris was in Tnllahoma.' His
headquarters, however, are still in Mur
freesboro’. It cannot he said that one
prospects for getting into Nashville are
flattering, but we think the chances for
keeping the enemy at bay increase.—
With such an army Gen. Biagg has only
to give them a little more, grape and hold
his own.—ljhattanuoga Rebel, 16ih.

Dog-grrd.
The following lines were perpetrated by Alex.
Clitfierall, Esq , Clerk of the House ot Represen
tatives during a discussion oi it law to
O.- Mason, .ty still as a log,
T ill waked up by Ashley ou the question of dog:
He ripped and he rared tili he made himself weep.
On the evils we suffer by losing our sheep;
He cried for God’s sake! let us now save our wool.
And together, like brothers, make a long aud
strong pull.
Our soldiers are reeding both breeches and sock3,
They are marching in shirt-tails aud sleeping on
rocks.
Wake up to your duty, impose a round tax
On dogs.pups and sluts, or else hang tlitm with
flax.
Then Little of Sumter, and Jones, of Marengo,
Cried, don’t tax the dogs but let all ou men go,
And raise all the dogs, and keep ’em and teed em,
If you think that you want ’em or know that you
need ’em.
■Oh yes! said Jim Foreman, who hails from St.
Clair,
With his specks on his nose and in Lis eye a tear,
The varments around me dance each night a jig,
And but for my dogs would not leave me a pig
Then Ussery, Logan and Latham and Rives,
All spit in their hands and rolled up their sleeves.
And swore they'd as soon turn to tadpoles and
frogs,
As to live in their diggins and not keep their dogs,
Melancholy Accident.—YYe regret
to hear that Captain Seaborn A. H. Jones,
a gallant soldier and estimable citizen of
Washington county, in this State, was
killed by a fall from his buggy Saturday
last. He was riding with, his wife, when
the horse took fright, ran away and cap-
sised the vehicle, throwing both out,
though Mrs. Jones sustained no material
injury.
Capt. Jones commanded the Washing
ton Rifles, of the 1st Georgia regiment,
throughout its arduous service at Uensacola
and in Virginia. On the disbandment of
the regiment, after a short period re-organi
zed his company and re-entered the ser
vice as part of the 32d regiment. Colonel
Harrison, now statioued at Savannah. A
short time since, he resigned his commis
sion and retired to his home in AV sshington
county, little dreaming that a life which
had resisted the dangers of the battle field
was destined by a mishap to he brought to
a speedy close.
Savannah. Republican, Nov. 20.
A Good Suggestion.—In the letter of
our army corresspondent which we pub- .
fished to-day, there will be found a sug
gestion which the authorities of the Slate
should adopt forthwith, in justice to the
brave men who have fought, and ate now
fighting, for our independence and liberties.
We refer to the proposition to hav'e en
rolled, in a record to be kept for that pur
pose, the name of every Georgian who
may go into tho public service, and to
aflix to it a memorandum of his fate. The
uames, we presume, are already on record,
and it only remains for some industrious
and enquiring mind to ferret out their
history and make both a matter of per
petual record and remembrance.
The reasons for the suggestion are given
by our correspondent, and we need not
enlarge. There is hardly a citizen of the
State who is not tenderly inte rested in the
preservation of these facts as part of our
history.
