1 Arrest Them. Mr. Editor. There has been some excitement and suspicion in this neigh borhood. caused by a squad of soldiers, consisting of some twenty odd. They sav they are from Mississippi and are going to join their command which is, (as they report,) the Jell' Davis’ legion of Gen. Stewart’s command. They said they were ojily traveling about ten or twelve miles a day. They stayed ail night in the settlement of Hickory Grove, Crawford county, on the night of 13th; said they were going to Macon. And Saturday night, following, three more stayed at Mfs. Smith’s in the same neighborhood. And one of this latter party passed himself off as a free negro. He said that lie had plenty of money, and it really seems so as he gave a negro man belonging to Mrs. Smith one"dollar to curry down his horse, and also paid live dollars for his supper and breakfast. This informa tion was furnished by the negroes of Mrs. Smith. Not, however, until they had left the settlement a day or two. The latter party, which passed on the 16th, said they were going to Milledge- ville. The said negro also said he be longed to the Abolition army and had been sent here by them. It is to lie hoped that the people will be on the lookout for such char acters, and see to it. that they get jus tice done them at all events, for it will be a shame if a dozen or two of Yankee theives and free negroes should pass through the very heart of the country without ever being molested in any way whatever. It is getting time, I think, that the people should be fully awake to the crisis, and he absolutely certain about every suspi cions character, who he is and where he is from, and all about him. Thus, Mr. Editor, I have given you the facts of the case, as they were re lated to me from an entirely reliable source; you will therefore please give this to the public, and if it turns out to be as reported, let the negro and his associates he sent where they be long, ii'arrested. A Soldikr. - P. S. The daily papers of the fol lowing places will please copy, (and all others that are disposed to do, so,) to-wit Augusta, Savannah, Charleston, Columbus, Atlanta, and Chattanoo ga- N. J>. I should have said that the above soldiers said they were refused transportation on the Railroads, and consequently they were going to Vir ginia by laud. [From the Petersburg Express,2rtli.] The 8k* m sh n I;1:j of \57eight—Des. p3.-atj righting - . A physician of this city who wit nessed the skirmish in JsJe of Wight county on Sunday last, has furnished us with further particulars of the affair. It was a hand to hand fight, and des perate while it lasted. On Saturday, iit two o’clock, between 400 and 500 of Dodge’s New York Mounted Rifle men left Suffolk, accompanied by two pieces of artillery. They reached Isle of Wight Court House Saturday night and immediately threw out pickets. On Sunday morning early, a squad of the enemy, seventy-five strong, star ted to find our pickets, six of whom, with five horses were captured. A cou rier was immediately despatched to our headquarters at Mill Swamp for reinforcements.—Captain Moore, com- mandiugat Mill Swamp, ordered fifty of the Third North Carolina (Col. Ra ker) to start in pursuit, and at once the gallant Carolinians were prompt ly in the saddle leaving about half past one o’clock. Upon nearing Car- roll’s Brigade, only three miles from Isle of V iglit, Dodge’s seventy-five Yankees were observed trotting leis urely along, with onrcaptured pickets and two citizens of the country, who had been seized while going to church. The road being well protected by trees, and the soil sandy, our men got within one hundred yards of the inva ders before they were discovered. The order to charge was given, and our in formant states that lie never listened to such an ear-piercing yell as that given by the brave Carolina hoys when they struck spurs to their horses, and, with drawn sabres, rushed to the con flict. Lieutenant Henderson, who was in command of the charge and in a moment’s time the fight was raging hand to hand, sabres clashing, pistols firing, and our hoys shouting at the top of the voices, “victory or death,” In fifteen minutes the conflict was over and the Carolina boys remained mas- tersof the field, such of the Yankees as were not killed and captured, taking to tiieir heels. Several dismounted and sought safety in the adjoining thickets. Our loss is hut three killed. Lieu tenant Wiggins was shot through the heart and instantly killed. A private, whose name we have been unable to as certain. is killed, and one other is miss ing, hut he is supposed to have been lorft in the woods and mav yet come in. The enemy left 1R dead on the field and we brought off 25 prisoners, 40 Sharpe’s rififes, F8 horses, and several pistols and sabres. We also recaptured our pickets taken in the morning, and released the civilians from their cap tivity. A private encountered a hurley Irish man, weighing over 200 pounds, and for five minutes the struggle for the mastery between these two was des perate and exciting, the Irish Yankee being so close to the Confederate that the latter could not draw his sabre, while his antogonist was striking him ponderous blows over the head with a big unloaded pistol. This private, by a desperate elfort, finally disengaged himself, and drawing his sabre pierced the Irishman througli and through the body, the weapon protruding several inches at the back. The recipient of this terrible thrust tumbled from his horse nod expired instantly. I Lieut. Nash gave one of the Yan kee cavalrymen his quietus by 2 pow erful and well directed blow ot^. the head, which cleft the i-kull, laying it wide open to the chin in front, and ex posing the brain. Knowing that a hea vy force was at Isle of Wight Court Ilousd, only three miles distant, our men left the dead unburied and hastened hack with their prisoners and spoils. One of the captives relates an amus ing incident. He states that they were riding leisurely along, not dreaming of danger, when one of their number, a New York clerk, remarked that he would give a $10 greenback, to see half a dozen rebels, as he really felt that he could whip that number. The remark liad barely escaped lips when a most unearthly yell saluted their ears, and upon turning their heads, here came like an avalanche, not half a dozen rebels, but what appeared to their bewildered gaze, one thousand of tiie bloody secesh. Singularly enough, as we are informed by this prisoner, the valiant New Yorker, who had but a second before offered a premium for a look at the rebels, put spurs to his horse, and was out of sight in a twink ling. Vallandingixam. Some of our cotemporaries seem to be opposed to the reception of this dis tinguished gentleman within our lines, should lie he banished hither by Presi dent Lincoln, instead of being sent to Dry Tortugas. They do not like the idea of allowing Lincoln to “make another Liberia or Botany Bay of these States” for political offenders. Nor should we like the idea, if Valand- ingham was banished for criminal or felonious conduct. But this is not pre tended. He is an honorable and able man, and is punished solely because of his opposition to Lincoln’s war upon the South. Why then close our doors against his coming? Humanity would dictate that a place of refugee he al lowed him amongst us in this his hour of need. There is no danger from him to our institutions, hut much good may grow out of influence of such a man, in favor of peace and constitu tional liberty, lie is a leader among the Northern Democracy and the voice of the exile may yet speak in thunder tones, to his northern friends, to stop this accursed war. Let him he received as other refu gees have been received—not with ostentation or parade, hut with quiet hospitality and honorable regard, as the avowed enemy of that monster, in human shape, Abraham Lincoln; and so tar the friend of the South the elo quent advocate of peace and the hold denouncer of northern despotism. [Confederate. The New Flag.—The Richmond Sentinel says: We have already come to like our new flag. We sit where through our window we can see it float, and it grows daily on our fancy. Long may it wave! To those who may wish to make a flag, we give the following figures as to showing the size and proportions .ofthat which so gracefully waves over our Capitol: Length 24 feet. Width 16 feet. The union or battle-flag IS feet 8 inches square. The blue cross or saltier, IS indies wide. The white edging to the cross 24 inches wide.—Size of stars 12 inches from point to point—bars placed 20 inches from centre to centre. The binding, (to which the flag is sewed on one margin,) six inches wide. The rope which elevates the flag two inches in diameter and 1(>V feet long. Th« ntjovo proportions, as to the length and width of the Hag, are not such as the law fixes. We have an attested copy of the law, through the kindness of one of the Secretaries of Congress, and find that it requires the length to he double the width. It is believed, however, by the members of the Congressional Committee who directed the making of the present flag, that this was not intended; and that the proportion is so faulty as to justify the departure that has been made under his authority.
