Mountain capture, lie was a very stern man and the uncompromising enemy of lories whom he hung without mercy wherever he found them. Of coarse per son's of the tory per.-uusion manifested a Halulary dread of Col. Campbell. There is this t radii ion of him in the Preston liwniiy, h:i descendants. The lion. Win. C. Preston, when :i youth, was traveling through the King’s Mountain country.— lie stopped at a wnysido liouso for rest und refri shmevrt. A very old woman sat on the porch when he entered, and regarding him with great attention inquired his name. It did not apparently afford a solution to her curiosity She, however, resumed her ■eruiit ny as he sat at dinn r; and when alter having slept for a short time on a bed in an adjoining room, he awak ened, this pertinacious old lady was again regarding him. tShe then said. “Young gentleman, you aro surprised ' ,lC 1,1 iercst i nave uikcii in you. 1 will ex plain it. \ ou remind me greatly of a man whom l once saw; that man was Col Win. My name is IV illiam Campbell Preston.” “I knew l could not be mistaken,” re plied the old woman. She then added, “Young gentleman, I never saw that ter rible man, your grandfarther, but once ; but that occasion made an impression upon my memory it can never lose. Private letter from East Tennessee says: The country is still very unquiet. Mur- | ders, rapes arson are the order of the day j and night. Last Friday uight a gang of returned soldiers luurdcrtai James Coaly, “ The Empire is an accomplished fact; law and order is being restored and the Juarists are on their last legs. Twenty thousand French troops are on their way to .Mexco, and soon all the robbers and guerillas will be cleaned out. Governor of Louisiana if tendered to me ; Afterward, Jeremiah Keys was murdered j p re f er ex il e by them in cold blood. They committed lour different rapes on clever woman — The citizens murdered were among the cleverest of the country. Occurrences of this sort arc common in North Washing ton, Greene and Lower Sullivan. The restoration of civil law here has not pro duced quiet, and it seems, will not. I fear that East Tennessee is doomed to un iversal ruin. We have before us a letter from a well- known citizen of Memphis, during the war, a resident of East Tennessee. He writes from West Virginia, saviug that I he would have returned to his home in s Memphis some time ago, but lias never deemed it safe to travel through East Tennessee even on a railway train. He describes the country as in a deplorable condition. There is now in Memphis an excellent gentleman, who had no participation in the rebellion, whose back bears broad, deep marks inflicted by those who learn ed lessons of love aud mercy from a Chris tian newspaper that rules public sentiment in East Tennesce. * * * H.
