County Court; The first session of the Couhty Court of Coweta, Judge W. hi. Sparks presi ding, was opened 10 o’clock Monday, 4th iust. Wc did not hear judge Sparks' charge to the Grand Jury, but have learn ed that it was very creditable to IIis Honor. The remainder of Monday was spent in the investigation or Continuing of civil cases. Tuesday morning the ease of the State vs llaidy Smith, Mrs. Smith (wife), Mrs. Loftin and Mrs. Ilogc (daughters), charged with Assault and Battery, was taken up. Mrs. Haynes was prosecuting the case. In the inves tigation the defendants severed, and Mrs. f/oftin being on trial, it was made to ap- that the skirmishing between the pear Smith and Haynes parties began about a Oeed'womaii Sunday morning, in which a good deal of bad blood was raised. Each ^inHy afterwards began to think of the obligations and dues of the other. Mrs. Smith remembered that about last Christ mas Mrs. Ilayucs had borrowed her quilt ing frames, and held them ever since, and Mrs. Haynes had not forgotten that Mrs. Smith owed her three cuts of “spun truck.” Mrs. Smith went after her quilt ing frames early Monday morning, and Mrs. Haynes refused to let her have them until she paid the “ spun truck. ’’ 6he owed her, and dared her to cuter her yard. Mrs. Smith could not take a dare, and over into the yard she went-and seiied the quilting frames. Mrs. Haynes seized them also. Then followed “jerks and pushes,” until reinforcements (daugh ters) on each side came up. "The battle began to wax hot and fierce, in the midst of which there was a vast amount of hni pulling, a limited use of hatchets, quilt ing him as saving, '• I was a wild ufst! wayward bov. CORRECTED.WEEKLY BY JONES cfc BUriCII. The Export Tax on Cotton. It appears that the House of Represen tatives has changed the mode of collect ing the tax of five cents per pound on cotton ffoiti that imported by the doirimit- tec of W’ays and Means. Instead of ma king the tax payable by the manufac turer, and levying it on all the cotton raised, as proposed by the committee, the tax is to be an export one, and of Coiirse attaches only to cotton shipped to a for eign country. Let no planter flatter himself that this dhange will in any way benefit him. It was not so intended, and will have no such effect. It is simply designed as an other bonus to Northern manufacturers, and will so operate, to tlic financial loss of the Government. In other words, the planter will still pay the tax, but the man ufacturer, not tlie Government, will re ceive it, in the shape of the enhanced profits which the obtaining of cotton at live cents per pound less than the price paid by the British manufacturer, will enable him to demand. If the capacity and the requirements of the domestic manufacturers embraced the whole crop of cotton raised in the coun try, this would not be the effect of an export duty on tlie raw material. But such is not the fact. The highest esti mate wc have yet seen of the amount of cotton required for the home manufac ture is 750,000 bales. Suppose we raise, this year, 1,500,000 bales. The domestic manufacturers will want half of it, and will take it at precisely the price which European competition, after paying the tax of five ceuts per pound, will, malte them pay. The cotton of India, China, Egypt, Brazil, &c., will be within the reach of the British manufacturers free from this enormous duty. Of coarse they will avail themselves of the cotton from these countries before taking a single bale from the United States. They must do so, or the Yankees will outsell them in all the markets and supply the world The qiiofa for the several counties have been turned over to the Justices of the Inferior Courts of the respective counties. After the smoke •further (and the supposition is far from j in the Walkill 4 alley, in the western part of tho combat had cleared away, it ap peared that one of the Ilaynes party had “ drnppcd,” and another had received a severe wound upon the head, and that Mrs. Smith had carried off the prize—the quilting frames. There was no loss of life or limb. Mrs. Ilaynes proceeded to the Court House, the Court being in session and having jurisdiction of such cases, and iudictcd the whole Smith party Mbr Assault and Battery. The defendants were immediately arrested, inasmuch as they resided near the corporate limits of the city, and on Tuesday morning Mrs. Loftin, one of the defendants, was placed -on trial. The County Solicitor, Mr. Al- van Freeman, and Mr. E. Douglass rep- icscuted the State—J. R. Meriwether and J. I>. TTabsoa the defendant. All parties spread themselves, and during the time devoted to speaking there was great sparring between counsel, and Judge, jury and spectators were highly amused. The j«ry returned a verdict of guilty, and Wednesday morning Judge Sparks sen tenced Mrs. L. to pay a fine of twenty dollars or be imprisoned thirty days.— Being unable to pay the fine, she has been confiined in jail. Tuesday evening the other defendants were placed on trial, and were acquitted by the jury, 4\ ednesday morning Milly Dougherty, W inny Dougherty and Alice Dougherty, ireeuwomeu. were arraigned and tried on charge of 4 agraney, and acquitted. For some weeks past the people living improbable) that the British manufactur- j of Orange County have been attacked by a disease which baffled the skill ol the physicians. In the case of the persons attacked, the symptoms were those of lead poisoning, and in instances whole families were "attacked. Sometimes the disease has resulted in death. To-day, hundreds are suffering from the effects of the poisoning to a greater or less degree. After much investigation it was found that these cases of lead poisoning resul ers Bud cotton enough in the other coun tries named to supply all the wants of their factories—cotton sold cheaper to them thau the American cotton can be with five ceuts per pound added for ex port duty. Iu that case, the home man ufacturers would have 1,500,000 bales in the market, from which to supply their demand for 750,000 bales. 4Vho docs not see that the cotton culture in this Newnan, Ga., June 8, 1S66. j Cotton.—22 @ 26c.
