We cart add condition of the country. While half nothing in the way of comment on reclining, half sitting up, supported by the arm of his daughter and neice on either side, Mr. Vun Buren’s eye lighted up with an unusual brilliancy, and even in bis position, ho seemed to expand to the eye with the pride and port of the orator of other days. The narrow cabin become and itoiium to his view, the few friends a mighty audience, but more than all, the interests of the country rose su preme in his mind, and compelled utter ance. lie began a speech on National affairs, and concluded it not until lie had spoken without interruption, two and a quarter hours- The gentlemen around his bed say that it was. in all respects, worthy of, and in some superior to, his happiest efforts. At the first, lie rapidly and perspicuously photographed the pro gress, the purposes, and the problems of the late war, and emphasized the pledged faith of the Government, that it could and should ultimate only in a secured Union of free and equal States. lie then adverted to the efforts of Mr. Johnson to to carry out that pledge, in letter and spir it, and to have for his inspiration and guide the unmistakable commands of the Constitution, and the generous magnanim ity of the people. This part of this most remarkable address was followed by a scarification of Congress in terms of satire, eloquence and reproach, of which none were so capable as lie. A rapid review of the polioy of reunion and disunion next ensued, and he thought lie was onee more addressing his fellow-citizens in his native State. The subject was presented with a splendid reference to the material inter ests and historic greatness of the Empire State, imperatively demanding that she plant herself square on the side of a per fected Union of equal and honored States. At the close Mr. Van Burcn pronounced a eulogy upon the worth, the talent, the in tegrity of lion. John T. Hoffman, such as only a man of his strong intimacy with the subject of his praise, and that intensi ty of personal attachment, of which lie developed such a remarkable amouu.t, could so gracefully, so sincerely, and so magnetically prounccd. As a piece of composition, whether viewed as a literary, an argumentative or an oratorical produc tion, this dying address was in all respects no less a credit to the National reputation HI3 uch a document. It speaks for itselt : Camp Near Camden, S. C-, \ February 2G, 1865. ) Mj/ Dear Wife:—l have no time for particulars. We have had a glorious time in this State. Unrestricted license to burn and plunder was the order of the da)'. The chivalry have been stript of most of their valuables Gold watches, silver pitchers, cups, spoons, forks, etc., etc., arc as common iri camp as blackber ries. The terms of plunder are as fol lows : The valuables procured are esti mated by companies. Each company is required to exhibit the results of its ope rations at any given place—one fifth and first choice lulls to the share of the com- mander-in-chief and staff, one fifth to the corps catmnander and .staff’, one fifth to field officers of regiments, and two filths to the company. Officers are not allowed to join these expedition unless disguising themselves as privates. One of our corps comman ders borrowed a suit of’ rough clolhes from one of my men, and was successf ul in this place. lie got a large quantity of silver, (among other things an old-time silver milk pitcher) and a very fine gold watch, from a Mr. De Sau.-sure at this place. De Saussure is one of the F. F. V’s., of S. C.. and was made to fork over liberally. Officers over the rank of cap- tun are not made to put their plunder in the estimate for general distribution. This is very unfair, and for that reason, in order to protect themselves, subordi nate officers and privates keep back every thing that they can curry about their per sons, such as rings, car-rings, breast-pins, etc., of which, if I ever live to get home, I have about a quart. I am not joking— 1 have at least a quart of jewelry for you \ and all the girls—and some No. 1 dia- : moud rings and pins among them. Uen. Sherman has silver and gold enough to ! start a bank, llis share in gold watches) and chains alone, at Columbia, was two hundred and seventy.five. But I said I could not go into particu lars. All the general officers and many besides, have valuables of every descrip tion down to embroidered ladies’ handker chiefs. (I have my share of them too.)
