I willed the nur ses in, ffnd with lights in their hands they stood around what we all supposed to he the mortal remains of McCarty. “Poor Mac,” said one of the nurses, “he’s gone ! wish I'd given him as much water as he wanted!”— “Boys,” said another, “do you not believe that if you refuse a dying man his lust request, he 11 haunt you after he’s dead?” “Yes,” replied one. The nurses were ignorant men, and were beginning to look wild as this conversation pro ceeded, when suddenly McCarty opened his big white eyes and fairly screamed out, “Boys, you didn’t give me that water!” Lights were thrown in every direction, and those terrified nurses fled in dismay. Next morning McCar ty was much better, and lived to laugh hearti ly at the great flight he had given the nurses though, poor fellow, he gradually sank to the grave. The Old Umpire Hospital, as it was called, was situated adout one mile from these ine- ville hospitals. In it were placed all the cases of gangrene. Earth never groaned under more suffering collected on the same area of ground, than was realized at this hospital. Yvben this frightful disease seized upon a wound, the suf ferer was doomed to see himself literally rot away inch by inch ! 'J here lies a poor fellow with his leg amputated, and the dry white bone projecting out several inches, the flesh having fallen off; yonder is another, the whole ; rim of whose abdomen has been eaten away, j and still he lives. Amid scenes like these you might see the triumphant power of divine grace. When the entire human body and mind have been of every shanty in the country, Mexico contains about eight million of peo ple. Of this number one million are educated and more or less wealthy. Tile other seven millions are ignorant, indolent, worthless, un principled and vicious, ready to oppose any ‘ | and all government which in any degree re strains their vices or seeks to collect taxes.— Their are about one half of the educated class who favor the Empire, believing it to he the surest chance for a government taat can protect life, liberty and property, but the oth er half of this class cling to the idea of a Re public. and oppose the Empire. Comp.uutive Strength.—According to the tax returns of last year, there were in Georgia 66,909 white male adults over twenty-one years of age and under sixty, and 65,909 blacks of the same age. In forty-five counties the blacks outnumber the whites. Coweta i3 not one oi that number. the Liberal army, and the next by those of ti Imperialists, a position rendering us liable to be misunderstood by both, which kept us con tinually in danger, and very far from comfort able. C.—Last night, at the Limerick Junction, Assistant In- spcetur-Generul Brownrigg, of the constabulary srrested on the arrival of the mail train from Cork, John Morrissey, the celebrated prize fighter and member of the United States Con gress, on a charge of Fenianism, just as he had alighted from a first-class carriage. He tad arrived at Cork by the Canard steamer Australasian, and was proceeding to Tipperary town. He is known as the man who had the first great fight in Canada, near the American frontier, about eight years ago, with John C. Keenan. whom Morrissey defeated after a des perate fight of twenty-three rounds, which oc cupied nearly three hours. He has since be come a gin palace proprietor and legislator, and joined the Fenian brotherhood at its com- Qencement, having subscribed largely to its rends. Morrissey, when arrested fainted and had to be taken to the gentlemen’s waiting room, where restoratives had ’to be applied, uter which he was taken to Dublin. ’ In con sequence of his arrest, a large force of infantry vis sent down early this morning to the Junc- fon. where the men are encamped for the pro tection of that place. —Irish Times, March 6.
