It stand: upon a knoll, a short distance from the road, in a grand obi wood that the dryads cannot hut love, and breathes out from its dim recess es, the potent influences of silence, of mystery and of indefinable awe. which must have added materially L tlie impressiveness of the cere monial of the Druidicul worship of the Celtic nations. In front of this really beautiful church, Tat Cleburne paused as he was going to glorious death on tlie bloodiest field of the war, and said to his attendants—“How quiet, how peaceful tire spot looks ! It seems to me that Hie dead would sleep well in a place like this.” Thus the hero spake prefiguring words, for af ter that night of carnage before the tiro-gird led works of Franklin, his friends, remember ing his musings before the church of St. John’s bore bis body back to its quiet shades, where it rests with those of Granbury, Staid, and some others of the bravest of the army of Ten nessee, who died lighting by his side. In company with , I visited his grave, and as 1 stood beneath the overhanging trees, dank with recent rain, found myself in voluntarily repeating, and for tlie first time realizing their full significance, thc threadbare lines: “And Ardennes waves above them her green b lives, Dewy with nature’s tear drops as they pass, Grieving, if aught inanimate ever griev es, Over the uirreturning brave.” With uncovered head, I looked upon the lowly resting place of “This inheritor of un fulfilled remnvu”—this (Sidney of the South, and while standing there, the memory of Stone wall Jackson rose up fresh and vivid, inter twining with that of Cleburne. At first I could not understand the association, but in a mo ment 1 recalled certain words of thc great Vir ginian, spoken while en route to the scene of his last earthly triumph, aud all was plain. It was tlie eve of the tight at Chaneellorsville.— Tlie day was sultry and his weary command happened to halt lor a few moments’ rest on ! the barren side of a stream, Hie opposite shore of which was heavily wooded. Here it was that lie said to the men—“Let us cross over the river, and rest beneath the shade of the trees.” The shadow of Azrael’s wing was over him then, as it was over Cleburne at Ashwood. and in a little while his name was giving new splendor to the already glorious necrology of his native State. Fat Cleburne! HtonesraH .’ Peers in courage if not in fame, one the favorite of the army of Virginia, the other the favorite of the army of Tennessee, both as true as steel, as constant as the sun in the discharge of every duty, each of them rests in the grave of his choice grandly and peacefully, while their names are written in amaranthine letters, side by side, in the book of a nation’s remembrance.—AMs. Index. lleurv 8.
