Last Monday the people of this county gath
ered, agreeably to tlie call of an adjourned
meeting of citizens held the Wednesday night
previous. F. A. Loughmilier was in the Chair,
and W J. Slatter acted as Secretary.
The President explained the object of the
meeting, after which explanation Col. A. S.
Marks arose and read, in forcible and impres
sive style, the petition to the President, which
had been prepared in obedience to instructions
of the meeting Wednesday night. V.Y give

indescribable something in the tears of this
lady which would touch the heart of any one
who had a soul, and make him forget th«»
behests of party, and cry aloud for vengeance,
as Collatinus cried when lie bore the body of
his wife, the fair, chaste Lucrece through the
streets of Rome, arousing his countrymen to
a pitch of revenge which culminated in the
expulsion of the hated Tarquin line, at.d made
Rome free. But no effort of this kind was
made by the sneaker to arouse the dormant
feelings of a submissive people. lie coun
selled, as he always has, the most perfect, al
most abject submission, and right here ve
believe it right in us to say that the man, the
editor, or the correspondent, who has asserted
that his speech on the Wednesday night previ
ous to this meeting, was incendiary and in
flammatory, is a'most unmitigated falsifier.—
Mr. (Jolyar, and every Conservative speaker in
our vicinity, have couns< lied the most complete
submission and obedience on the part of our
people to cjii/ law, however unconstitutional,
however grievous.
But we say that the tears of Mrs. Brown
were most natural, and, if our own bosom was
an index, there must have been a feeling of
indignation in the heart of every one as utter
