Glad in the sunshine, All things lift th§ir voices To the Giver of good: And the whole world rejoices Because of the love Of the Father above. Hearts sad with sorrow, And hands that are weary, Grow restful in God, And are hopeful and cheery; For His love will last, When all else shall be past. To carve well is an accomplish ment every lady and gentleman | should strive to acquire, for it is not ; only a graceful one, but is» a source of economy— a saving of time and food—because when thoroughly un derstood no time need be wasted in awkward attemps to find the joints, and the meat neatly and skillfully carved can all be used, while if torn and badly cut much will be unfit in appearance to serve. A good knife is necessary to ena ble one to do the work with dexter ity. A long, thin blade, well shart- ened, should be used for large joints, bam or turkey; a short, narrow, sharp-pointed one for chicked 01 small game. The position in carv- ng is a question open to dispute. Some authorities say it should al ways be done sitting, while others maintain that personal convenience should be consulted. A we.'I knowi writer on table manners says on thi subject: “It is laid down as a rub by many that one must not stand up when cctving. If a person is tall, or the chair is quite high, there is no doubt that it may he a mori graceful, quiet way to keep the seal while ca.ving, especially when tha which is to he served is small, ri quiring very liltle’skill. But whe. there is a large piece of beef, tuui ton or bam it is certainly easiti and, to our e^e, more graceful, t carve standing. This is one of th cases where, if fashion and commo sense come in collision, we ihi.ii no latter wiii conquer.” The dish—which snould alv\a.\.- be of good size—must he plaeejj f near the carver as to give him, i tier, lull control of it. As the little boy was of a very inquiri tg mind, and every thing seemed to attract his atten tion, I could not help listening to his questions. “What is that, auntie?” the little boy commenced, pointing to a stack of hay on the marsh. “Oh that’s hay, dear,” answered the careworn lady. “What is hay, auntie?” “Why hay is hay, dear.” “But what is hay made of?” Why, hay is made of dirt and wafer, and air?” “Who makes it?” “God makes it, dear.” “Does he make it in the daytim. or night ?” “In both, dear.” “And Sundays?” “Yes, alt the time.” “Ain’t it wicked to make hay ot Sunday, auntie?” “Oh, I don t know. I’d keep still Willie, that's a dear. Professor X., an excellent educa tor and profound student, who does not spurn a reasonable share of homely household duties that falls to the lot of every head of a New England family of moderate cir cumstances, was in his den deeply absorbed in the contemplation of an abstruse subject, when his wife opened the door and called [softly to him: “My dear, could you help us in our house cleaning by beating just three rugs that you’ll find out un- l*r the soutii window of the parlor? If you will, please take then out nro the hack yard and heat them on the line, and I’ll he so much obliged.” The professor arose, • • zed his most serviceable walking stick, and went out into the yard, still deeply absorbed in tho learned medita tions that had occupied him in the house. He took on# of the three rugs from under the parlor window transferred it to the back yard, beat it long and manfully and hun it on the line. When he came hack for another rug he was stiil too much t bsorhed to notice that there were still three rugs under the window, and when he had beat n another and had hung that out and had come back again, and there were still three rugs under tne win dow, his meditations nover switch ed off from the subject of their con centration to the regular and mys terious renewal of the third rug. And so he kept on heating those three rugs and meditating until the morning wore to midday, and the professor began to grow hungry; and when the yearnings of appetite actually brought his contempla ion down to sublunary things, it occur red to him to iook at the clothes line, and there he counted no les: than sixteen rugs, all beautifully beaten. Very Much Related to Royalty. The duko of Iiraganza, heir to the Portuguese crown, is related to an un usual number of royal families. He is nephew of King Humbert of Italy, and also of the Princess Clotilde, and theri- fore cousin of Prince Victor Napoleon. His grandmother, Maria da Gloria, was niece of the second wife of Napoleon Bonaparte. His grandfather, Dom Fer nando, was cousin of Queen Victoria; and thus the young man may claim re lationship to the royal families of Eng land and Belgium, and all the connec tions of tho prolific Saxe-Coburg-Gotha tribe. He is, moreover, gfand-nephew of Dom Pedro of Brazil, and thus related to the Neapolitan Bourbons. And now he is about to marry into the Orleans family. —Foreign Letter. ^anltar^ Advantages of Low Ceilings.
